BACKGROUND:Children with disabilities increasingly encounter digital environments with opportunities and risks, while relationships among digital parenting self-efficacy, parental self-efficacy, and family support remain understudied. METHODS:This cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted with 195 parents of children aged 0-18 years with disabilities registered in a disability services unit in Türkiye. Data were collected using a sociodemographic form, the Digital Parenting Self-Efficacy Scale, the Parental Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Family Support Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression. Missing data were handled using multiple imputation with the fully conditional specification method, and pooled estimates were calculated according to Rubin's rules. RESULTS:Most children used the internet daily and for extended periods, and some exhibited behaviors suggestive of problematic use. Parents demonstrated moderate-to-high levels of digital literacy, digital security awareness, and digital communication skills. Parental self-efficacy showed positive associations with digital competencies and perceived family support. In the adjusted regression model controlling for maternal age, maternal education, family income, and social security status, digital security and perceived family support emerged as significant predictors of parental self-efficacy, with digital security representing the strongest predictor. CONCLUSIONS:Digital security and family support play important roles in strengthening parental self-efficacy among families raising children with disabilities. IMPLICATIONS FOR PEDIATRIC NURSING:Pediatric nurses can play a key role in assessing digital use in families of children with disabilities, strengthening parents' digital literacy and self-efficacy, and designing family-centred interventions to reduce digital risks and enhance family support.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) places a lifelong caregiving burden on families, especially mothers, who may also experience positive psychological changes such as posttraumatic growth (PTG). Understanding how family characteristics and autism severity influence parenting is essential for effective psychosocial support. The aim of this study is to examine the parental behaviors and posttraumatic growth levels among mothers of children diagnosed with ASD and to explore predictors of positive parenting. This descriptive study included 112 mothers of children with ASD attending a pediatric psychiatry outpatient clinic. Data were collected through a demographic questionnaire, the Alabama Parenting Questionnaire, the Posttraumatic Growth Scale, and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. Statistical analysis included multiple linear regression. The mean age of the children with ASD was 7.65 ± 3.76 years, and the mean age at diagnosis was 3.55 ± 1.62 years. Mothers reported varying levels of child dependence in daily activities, particularly in feeding (38.2
BACKGROUND:Parents of children with disabilities often manage complex nutritional and oral health needs, yet the factors supporting their competence remain insufficiently understood. AIM:This study examined the relationships of parental practices, parental self-efficacy, family support and caregiving characteristics with nutrition and oral health management among children with disabilities. METHODS:A cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design was used. The sample comprised 195 parents of children with disabilities. Data were analysed using independent-samples t tests, one-way analysis of variance with Bonferroni post hoc comparisons, Pearson correlation analysis and multiple linear regression. RESULTS:Parental self-efficacy and family nutritional awareness differed significantly across selected sociodemographic and caregiving characteristics. Family support was the strongest predictor of parental self-efficacy. Greater preparedness for disability, social security coverage, higher maternal education and cooperative child behaviour during dental examinations were also associated with higher self-efficacy. Paternal education was not a significant predictor. Caregiving difficulty was positively associated with family nutritional awareness, suggesting that greater caregiving demands may encourage adaptive health information-seeking and management behaviours. A high prevalence of dental pain was reported among children, indicating potential deficiencies in preventive oral health care, timely service access and caregiver education. CONCLUSION:Parental competence in managing the nutrition and oral health of children with disabilities is shaped by interpersonal, educational and structural resources. Interventions should strengthen family support, caregiver preparedness, access to social protection and practical guidance on preventive oral health and nutrition. Particular attention should be directed to families experiencing limited resources and children with unmet dental care needs in practice.
Background Although caregiving for children with developmental disabilities has been widely examined, fathers' experiences remain relatively underexplored. This qualitative descriptive study explored fathers' caregiving experiences in the context of children with developmental disabilities, focusing on psychological, social, economic, and systemic dimensions of caregiving and fathers' coping and adaptation processes. Design and methods A qualitative descriptive design was used. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 19 fathers of children diagnosed with developmental disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis. Rigor was ensured through credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability strategies, and reporting followed COREQ guidelines. Results Six themes were identified: meaning and transformation of fatherhood, multidimensional burden and challenges, social attitudes and support versus stigma, redefinition of the paternal role, need for formal support systems, and coping and adaptation. Fathers reported psychological distress, future-oriented anxiety, financial burden, social challenges, service-related barriers, and a need for more accessible father-inclusive support. Caregiving was also associated with personal growth, meaning-making, emotional engagement, and active participation in daily care. Conclusions Fathers' caregiving experiences reflected both burden and resilience, shaped by personal, social, and systemic factors. Recognizing fathers as active caregivers is essential for strengthening family-centered pediatric care. Implications for pediatric nursing Pediatric nurses should include fathers in assessment, communication, education, care planning, and support services to address caregiver burden and support family-centered pediatric care.
PURPOSE:This study, using Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology, aims to examine how mothers and fathers in Turkey construct and interpret fatherhood in the context of child health and caregiving, and to elucidate how these meanings align with Lamb's dimensions of paternal involvement. METHOD:A hermeneutical phenomenological design was used. Using criterion-based purposive sampling and snowball sampling methods, the study included 24 parents living in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. The Parent Demographic Information Form and Semi-structured Interview Form were used to collect data. Data were collected through individual in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed in MAXQDA through an iterative hermeneutic circle using a hybrid deductive-inductive approach. RESULTS:The results indicated four themes: (1) the meaning and lived experience of fatherhood, (2) the sharing of parental roles and responsibilities, (3) factors influencing the role of fatherhood, and (4) the need to improve the role of fatherhood. CONCLUSION:In contemporary Turkey, fatherhood operates as a hybrid practice, combining growing caregiving involvement and emotional closeness with persistent expectations of authority, protection, and provision. Across Lamb's dimensions, change is most evident in engagement and responsibility. However, it remains fragile in terms of accessibility, underscoring need to address time/access constraints beyond mere awareness. IMPLICATIONS FOR PEDIATRIC NURSING:In Turkey and similar Mediterranean settings, priorities include brief father-inclusive teach-back during well-child/immunization visits, shared discharge care plans, and routine screening of time/workload barriers to tailor accessibility-focused task plans supported by father-inviting materials.
