Humankind is facing the enormous challenge of ensuring a sustainable future for new generations. A key guide to addressing this challenge is the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to promote economic and social development and environmental preservation. Despite the good intentions embedded in the SDGs, current performance worldwide remains below expectations. To be effective, the progress on the SDGs depends on the creation of new scientific knowledge. In this context, universities and research institutes should play a fundamental role in generating new scientific knowledge. Although recent models have been developed to assess universities’ knowledge creation to advance the SDGs, it remains necessary to develop new models that can more effectively evaluate and detail this capability. The goal of this article is to introduce a three-level framework for identifying SDG science at the country level across universities and research institutes. This model is validated through a documentary study based on SciVal-Elsevier data, on Brazilian universities, and a research institute in the context of SDG 2 research—zero hunger—between 2015 and 2024. As the main results, the framework provides three levels of knowledge mapping based on subject areas, knowledge categories, and cluster names, whereas the first and the last are used in the Scopus database, and the third is proposed in this study. As a result, this framework consists of a practical instrument for the mapping of the effective issues addressed in each SDG, and for comparing the effective content of SDG science between research institutions. As the main contribution, this article introduces a practical instrument for the assessment of the contribution of universities and research institutes in SDG science. Theoretically, this framework provides a practical process for rapidly identifying the current SDG science performance in research institutions at the country level. For practical purposes, this study can be used by universities, research institutes, and policymakers to understand the current state of SDG science in a country or region and to develop new research programmes and strategies for SDG science and innovation.
New technologies are an important instrument to face the global challenges and reach sustainability. Their adoption triggers different perspectives, interests and discourses of different stakeholders’ groups involved in this phenomenon. Therefore, analyzing the different perspectives of diverse stakeholders’ groups through their respective discourses is a fundamental instrument to assess the potential barriers and the viability of its adoption. This article analyzes how different stakeholders perceive the impacts on sustainability regarding the andadoption of new harvesting technologies in the forest industry in Brazil, through the dimensions of triple bottom line. The combination of qualitative and quantitative approach is used to analyze a set of stakeholders’ documents that reflect their perception and positions on the adoption of these technologies. As a result, the different stakeholders’ perspectives are mapped in a two-dimensional framework, based on the discursive focus (narrow versus broad), and the discourse valence (negative, neutral or positive). As contribution, this article shows the possibility to map the different stakeholders’ perspectives about a same phenomenon, which is a useful tool for perceive the possibilities of action of stakeholders through the intentions expressed in their discourse.
Green innovations comprehend new processes, materials and devices that present a friendlier relation with the environment than existing technologies. Currently, the majority of studies about the performance of green innovations focus on environmental performance. However, their economic performance is an essential issue in their diffusion. Despite the numerous techno-economic assessment studies on green innovations, the literature still lacks a comprehensive perspective on their main economic dimensions. This article presents a systematic literature review on the economic performance of green innovations. A total of 75 articles addressing economic indicators of green innovations were analysed and categorised into four main categories: Cost-benefit indicators, Investment-return indicators, Market indicators, and Institutional-geographic indicators. For the theory, this article presents a comprehensive perspective on the main areas of economic performance of green innovations, as well as a detailed view of their economic indicators. For the practice, it provides valuable guidance for designing comprehensive models to assess the economic benefits of green innovations.
The development of technological innovations involves complex social phenomena resulting from the interaction of individuals within innovation ecosystems. Consequently, a thorough analysis of how these individuals interact and frame their activities within these settings is essential. This article examines the contribution of individuals, situated within multiple institutional levels, to the development of new technologies and their own careers in an academic innovation ecosystem. Through a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, this study analyzed the roles played by individuals in the development of 93 patents within a medical academic unit in Brazil. The findings of this study propose a framework based on four institutional levels that enable the development of new technologies: the individual level, team level, organizational level, and interorganizational level. Within these levels, twenty-one sub-categories are identified. Specifically, at the individual level, six types of individual roles were identified. At the team level, three patterns of knowledge sharing, three intertemporal patterns of knowledge transfer, and five types of team configurations were identified. At the organizational and interorganizational level, four types of arrangements were observed. The main theoretical contribution of this article lies in demonstrating how the institutional structure acts as a supporting mechanism for individuals' actions in creating new technologies and advancing their professional careers. In practical terms, the various constructs identified can be utilized to evaluate the institutional development of academic innovation ecosystems and inform the formulation of policies aimed at fostering their growth.
Abstract Paper aims This study characterizes Purchasing and Supply Management (PSM) projects in the context of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) at a Brazilian steel company, using the reference architecture model industry 4.0 (RAMI4.0) as a basis. Originality The article adapts RAMI4.0 to the PSM context and empirically evaluates the model, promoting digitalization practices in PSM. Research method An in-depth case study was conducted using participant observation, document analysis, individual interviews, and focus groups with PSM professionals. Main findings By adapting the life cycle (dimension) to the stages of PSM deployment, this study establishes a framework for monitoring and optimizing activities throughout the PSM process, offering valuable insights. Implications for theory and practice The customization and evaluation of the RAMI4.0 model for PSM can serve as a reference framework for companies seeking to drive the digital transformation of the PSM function. This model offers a strategic perspective on how to integrate Industry 4.0 technologies across various organizational levels, with the goal of promoting digital PSM.
Humankind faces a tradeoff between environmental preservation and providing well-being to societies. One solution is to develop new processes, known as green processes, with better environmental performance than their counterparts. Despite the need to understand green processes better, current classification models do not approach them specifically nor consider their classification parameters in a holistic perspective that can show how they can be used to bypass the existing tradeoff between environmental preservation and well-being provision. Addressing this research gap, the purpose of this article is to present the concept of green processes and demonstrate how they support the transition to a sustainable future, ensuring, at the same time, economic and social development, as well as environmental preservation. Through a systematic literature review of 526 articles addressing green processes, this study proposes a classification of these processes and demonstrates how they can be employed to address existing environmental challenges. As main findings, this article classified green processes into three categories: green productive processes, green substantial processes, and green hybrid processes, with three basic roles: mitigating the adverse effects of production on the environment, recuperating damaged ecosystems, and decontaminating and recovering valuable materials. It proposes a model that illustrates how green processes mitigate adverse anthropogenic environmental effects, thereby enabling ecological preservation and promoting social and economic development. The conceptual framework introduced in this article can be utilised to support the development of policies that integrate various green processes to achieve a sustainable future.
Universities play a fundamental role in the economy and social development. In this role they use different channels for the inception of innovations in markets. It is still necessary a systematic view capable of identifying the existent innovation channels and their relationship with the university innovation ecosystem. Drawing upon the university-industry literature, this article outlines a conceptual framework about the university innovation channels, the main agents of university innovation ecosystems and their respective roles in the technology-transfer process. This framework is based on three layers: 1 – macro-context; 2 – micro-context; and 3 – internal-context. There are identified three types of innovation channels: 1 – university spin-offs; 2 – cooperation with external agents; and 3 – licensing of patents. This framework is validated by a qualitative approach through visits and interviews with nine agents (4 spin-offs; 1 technology center; 2 science parks; and 2 business incubators) of three different university innovation ecosystems in Brazil. This article contributes to the theory presenting an integrative perspective about the agents of university innovation ecosystems, explaining how they contribute to the university innovation channels insert innovations in markets. For the practice this article can guide the assessment and planning of the improvement of university innovation ecosystems.
This research aims to evaluate the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) tool called CranioCatch, which assists dentists by examining the anthropomorphization and cognitive aspects of the decision-making process. It remains unclear to what extent technology replaces or complements the work of healthcare professionals. Additionally, the specific cognitive aspects of the decision-making process attributed to CranioCatch, characterizing the anthropomorphization of the technology, have not been mapped. The methodology employed included "instruction to the double," "shadowing," and interviews. The study reveals how CranioCatch replicates cognitive activities performed by dentists by comparing, correlating, and associating images from a specific patient with similar images in a database. Through these steps (comparison, correlation, and association), which constitute the identification of the problem, it is possible to develop alternatives and select the best solution for the patient's situation. Thus, AI contributes to both the identification and action aspects of the decision-making process. From a physical perspective of anthropomorphization, the primary characteristic replicated by AI was the sense of vision. Regarding contributions to dentistry, the AI technology studied enhances the efficiency of professionals, notably reducing evaluation and diagnosis times.
A better understanding of the entrepreneur’s behavior should consider multiple theoretical perspectives. In this respect, studies capable of integrate different perspectives under a holistic framework are welcome. Gathering constructs under three perspectives, entrepreneurial-based view, resource-based view and market-based view, this article presents a holistic view about how the entrepreneur background influences the firm' strategy in a traditional industry. This article adopts a holistic perspective of the entrepreneurship investigating the importance of the entrepreneurs' background in their strategic decisions, showing important insights. Through the qualitative approach there were performed eleven comparative case studies with agricultural entrepreneurs of the artisanal cachaça industry in a mining region, which production started in the XVI century and is intimately related to the historical origin of Brazil. In the majority, entrepreneurs have access to key production and market resources through family ties. This situation directly influences the product value attributes, the consumer segments focused, and the size of product lines. There is also a relation between the entrepreneurs' motivation and segmentation strategy and between their formal education and cognitive style. This article should guide the elaboration of entrepreneurial training programs, whereas the firm's strategy can be designed considering the entrepreneur background.
Technological innovation has played a fundamental role in the economic prosperity of firms and countries. Despite several studies on their effects on firms and markets, it is still necessary to assess how introducing technological innovation as innovative products, processes, and services will face extant market forces and transform them. This paper introduces a model for evaluating the potential economic effects of technological innovations based on three dimensions: technological paradigm, market value, and impact on extant industries. Based on the combination of these three dimensions, eight configurations of technological innovations are presented from an intertemporal perspective, considering their impact on the economy. This model has been validated by assessing several academic patents and helps evaluate the market potential of new technologies.
Science parks are fundamental for the development of new technology-based firms. For this purpose, intense networks of relationships with external agents permeate them. However, it is still necessary a more systematic view about the relationship between science parks and external agents. Accordingly, this article analyzes the relationship between science parks and external agents based on five levels of geographic scope: local, regional, national, continental, and global. In this research, a two-stage approach was employed we first investigate 30 science parks in Brazil and Portugal through documental analysis. The findings are refined and validated through interviews involving a sub-sample of 11 science parks. We identify six different categories of relationships between science parks and external agents—foundation, investment, management, knowledge-transfer, technical–scientific partnerships, and partnerships (networks/associations)—and four types of external agents—associations, companies, governments, and universities. We find considerable differences in the intensity and nature of the relationships between science parks and external agents within and throughout all geographic levels as well as locational differences in Brazil and Portugal. Finally, this article presents a detailed view of the relationships between science parks and external agents from a holistic perspective. Our results and insights can be useful for assessing the contextual insertion of science parks at different levels of geographic scope, paving the way for their deeper characterization and further research on their maturity.
PurposeThis article introduces a model of knowledge creation in consciousness, the creation of explicit knowledge in six forms and its register and organisation in documents.Design/methodology/approachAssuming the premise of three realms of reference to knowledge and two forms of reference to entities, this article, through a phenomenological perspective, deduces a model of the creation of knowledge in consciousness and the creation of explicit knowledge in six forms and its register in documents.FindingsTwo basic types of knowledge are introduced: situated knowledge and theoretical/normative knowledge. Considering three realms of reference of knowledge – the space–time realm, subjectivity realm and linguistic realm – six general types of knowledge are deduced. Finally, three layers of knowledge organisation are presented: classification and mapping documents, theoretical/normative documents and documents of situations.Practical implicationsThis article can contribute to the development of more efficient forms of creation of explicit knowledge, its register in documents and the development of more efficient knowledge organisation and management systems.Originality/valueRelying on established perspectives of the realms where subjectivity is immersed, this article discusses how knowledge is created in consciousness and registered in documents. It also presents a novel perspective of types of knowledge through the combination of dimensions, realms of reference and forms of reference to entities.
PURPOSE This article aims to introduce a guide to improving hospital bed setup by combining lean technical practices (LTPs), such as kaizen and value stream mapping (VSM) and lean social practices (LSPs), such as employee empowerment. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH Action research approach was employed to analyze the process of reconfiguration of bed setup management in a Brazilian public hospital. FINDINGS The study introduces three contributions: (1) presents the use of VSM focused specifically on bed setup, while the current literature presents studies mainly focused on patient flow management, (2) combines the use of LSPs and LTPs in the context of bed management, expanding current studies that are focused either on mathematical models or on social and human aspects of work, (3) introduces a practical guide based on six steps that combine LSPs and LSPs to improve bed setup management. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS The research focused on the analysis of patient beds. Surgical beds, delivery, emergency care and intensive care unit (ICU) were not considered in this study. In addition, the process indicators analyzed after the implementation of the improvements did not contemplate the moment of the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, this research focused on the implementation of the improvement in the context of only one Brazilian public hospital. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The combined use of LSPs and LTPs can generate considerable gains in bed setup efficiency and consequently increase the capacity of a hospital to admit new patients, without the ampliation of the physical space and workforce. SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS The improvement of bed setup has an important social character, whereas it can generate important social benefits such as the improvement of the admission service to patients, reducing the waiting time, reducing hospitalization costs and improving the hospital capacity without additional physical resources. All these results are crucial for populations, their countries and regions. ORIGINALITY/VALUE While the current literature on bed management is more focused on formal models or pure human and social perspectives, this article brings these two perspectives together in a single, holistic framework. As a result, this article points out that the complex bed management problem can be efficiently solved by combining LSPs and LTPs to present theoretical and practical contributions to the important social problem of hospital bed management.
