Abstract Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) has a wide application in agriculture and the Penman-Monteith FAO-56 (PM) method is considered standard to calculate it, but this model requires several meteorological data, which are not always readily available. As an alternative, other models that require less data and according to the climatic characteristics of the region are chosen. Thus, the objective of this work was to carry out a comparative study of 12 methods of daily ETo with the PM standard method for 584 automatic weather stations grouped by climate types in Brazil and to evaluate the performance of the different methods according to the climate. To evaluate the performance of the models, the coefficient of determination (R2), the root mean square error (RMSE, mm dia−1), the Kling-Gupta efficiency index (KGE) and percent bias (PBIAS) were used. Overall, the Turc method had the best performance in relation to the other methods, followed by the Penman FAO-24, Makkink, Priestley-Taylor, Hargreaves-Samani and Tanner-Pelton methods. In addition, it is concluded that for the most appropriate choice of a model it is necessary to consider the climatic characteristics of the studied region and the availability of meteorological data.
The application of the standard Penman-Monteith (PM) method to estimate reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is frequently limited by the scarcity of air relative humidity data. In this case, it is common to assume the dew point temperature (Tdew) is equal to the minimum temperature (Tmin), to calculate the actual water vapor pressure (ea), but this practice tends to underestimate ETo in drier environment conditions. Thus, this study aimed to propose a new approach to estimate Tdew as a function of Tmin and the daily thermal amplitude (TA), aiming to estimate the vapor pressure in scenarios with limited relative humidity data. For this, daily data from 584 automatic weather stations distributed across Brazil were used, comparing the performance of the proposed method with the standard FAO-56 PM. The results demonstrated that the proposed general equation (Tdew=Tmin-0.2∙TA) outperformed traditional approaches in most Brazilian climates (Af, Am, Aw, Cfa, Csa, Cwa, and Cwb), which represent about 87% of the country's area, significantly reducing the error (RMSE) and mitigating systematic underestimation or overestimation biases observed in other approaches. In Bsh, Cfb, and As climates (13% of the area), the general equation presented limited performance, and a regional calibration is indicated to improve its efficiency in estimating Tdew and, consequently, ea and ETo. Therefore, it is concluded that the use of the daily thermal amplitude eliminates the subjectivity in the choice of correction factors to estimate actual vapor pressure and offers a physically more consistent alternative to estimate ETo on a daily scale.
Abstract Studies on vulnerability that include both environmental and social aspects, are important tools to support decision-making in the face of socio-environmental problems. The Agrarian Reform settlements have a diversity of social characteristics in addition to being located in environmental systems with specific limitations. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a method to identify the socio-environmental vulnerability of the settlements. The Socio-Environmental Vulnerability Index was created from environmental and social indicators. The SPI revealed severe to extreme droughts mainly between 2014 and 2016. Three settlements were classified with moderate IVS and six with high IVS. The settlements showed little variation in environmental vulnerability. The IVUSA ranged from moderate to high. Settlements with high socio-environmental vulnerability also showed high social vulnerability, while areas with moderate vulnerability exhibited lower indices of both social and environmental vulnerability.
This is a database containing rainfall intensity–duration–frequency equations (IDF equations) for 6550 pluviographic and pluviometric stations in Brazil. The database was compiled from 370 different publications and contains the following information: station identification, geographic position, size and period of the rainfall series used, parameters of the IDF equations, and literature references. The database is available on Mendeley Data (DOI: 10.17632/378bdcmnc8.1) in the form of spreadsheets and vector files. Since the launch of the Pluvio 2.1 software in 2006, which included 549 IDF equations obtained in the country, this is the largest and most accessible database of IDF equations in Brazil. The data provided may be useful, among other purposes, for designing hydraulic structures, controlling water erosion, planning land use, and water resource planning and management.
Knowledge of vegetation behavior in a river basin is important to estabilish water availability over the time. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the spatial-temporal phenological behavior of vegetation based on the time series of the Enhanced Vegetation Index, between 2001 and 2016, by applying the technique of principal components analysis in the Itapemirim River Basin, ES, Brazil, and to correlate the phenological response with El Niño-Southern Oscillation. According to the results, the first four components represented 53.21% of the total variation of the Enhanced Vegetation Index in the Itapemirim river basin. The first component has a constant pattern with less temporal variation and has a direct relationship with rain in areas with lower altitudes, and an inverse and non-standard relation in areas with higher altitudes. The second component represents the seasonal variation, and presents a negative relation with areas shaded by the relief. The third component presents the seasonal signal with a decrease in the positive effects of loadings in the years 2009, 2010 and 2011, being influenced by El Niño, and the fourth component has the seasonal signal, as well as the effects of El Niño in the years 2009 / 2010 and 2015/2016.
This study adapted the Socioenvironmental Vulnerability Index (SEVI) for rural communities in Espírito Santo, Brazil, considering climatic, environmental and social factors. The analysis included using an integration of indices, such as the Environmental Vulnerability Index (EnVuIn) and the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). The inclusion of variables, such as the Water Quality Index (WQI), the percentage of conflicting use of Permanent Preservation Areas (PPAs) and the existence of water reservoirs, presented new elements that directly influence environmental vulnerability. The results indicate significant human interference in PPAs with high rates of conflicting use, especially in the communities of Boa Esperança (85.8%) and José Marcos (85.4%). The absence of water reservoirs proved to be a critical factor for the water security of the communities. Communities such as Novo Sonho presented high poverty rates, reflecting a high SVI (0.61). The EnVuIn indicated high environmental vulnerability in the communities of Boa Esperança, Santa Clara, Ita, Novo Sonho and Monte Alegre. Integrating the indicators and adapting the methodology resulted in a high SEVI for most communities, with emphasis on Novo Sonho and Boa Esperança (0.54), classified as very high. The study reinforces the need for public policies to reduce socioenvironmental risks and promote sustainability in rural communities.
Rainfall erosivity (RE) represents the potential of rainfall to cause soil erosion, and understanding its impact is essential for the adoption of soil and water conservation practices. Although several studies have estimated RE for Brazil, currently, no single reliable and easily accessible database exists for the country. To fill this gap, this work aimed to review the research and generate a rainfall erosivity database for Brazil. Data were gathered from studies that determined rainfall erosivity from observed rainfall records and synthetic rainfall series. Monthly and annual rainfall erosivity values were organized on a spreadsheet and in the shapefile format. In total, 54 studies from 1990 to 2023 were analyzed, resulting in the compilation of 5516 erosivity values for Brazil, of which 6.3% were pluviographic, and 93.7% were synthetic. The regions with the highest availability of information were the Northeast (35.6%), Southeast (30.1%), South (19.9%), Central-West (7.7%), and North (6.7%). The database, which can be accessed on the Mendeley Data platform, can aid professionals and researchers in adopting public policies and carrying out studies aimed at environmental conservation and management basin development.
Disasters caused by rainfall extremes represent social challenges in several sectors, especially in climate change scenarios. Along with changes in land use and land cover, this relationship may become more complex. Thus, the present study aimed to detect recent trends in the pattern of rainfall indicators and associate them with records of natural disasters and the evolution of changes in land use and land cover for the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. Daily rainfall data from 77 rain gauge stations from 1970 to 2018 were used to analyze climate trends in different rainfall indicators obtained using the RClimDex software . Records of natural disasters from 1991 to 2020 in the state of Espírito Santo were gathered from the Brazilian Integrated Disaster Information System. Additionally, land use and land cover data from 1985 and 2019 were also used. The Mann–Kendall (MK) test and the Sen slope were used to detect and quantify trends. In the Litoral Norte Espírito-santense and Noroeste Espírito-santense mesoregions of the State, trends of drought intensification are expected mainly in the regions further north. Associated with the great recent agricultural expansion in the region, this trend is concerning. The Central Espírito-santense and Sul Espírito-santense mesoregions tend to become wetter, which explains the recent increase in floods and heavy rainfall. No significant trends were found in the other regions studied. The approach adopted in this study has the potential to assist decision-making, implement mitigation and/or adaptation measures, and reduce the impacts of natural disasters in different regions of the world.
Freshwater scarcity is perceived as a global systemic risk. Intending to reach water secutiry, flow regulation reservoirs are alternatives to improve streamflow and water storage, especially in places where demand exceeds water availability during periods of drought. However, the unavailability of historical series of flows in watersheds makes the adequate design of reservoirs difficult. To overcome such difficulties, synthetic series of flows are currently being generated for the specific sections of the watercourses where these structures are to be designed. The present study aimed to evaluate two methods of generating synthetic series of flows applied to design the capacity of flow regulation reservoirs in conditions of limited data. A monitored hydrological region (Itapemirim River Basin, Espírito Santo, Brazil) and synthetic flow series generated according to the methodologies of Rodrigues (2017) and Cesconetto (2021) were used. The methodologies were tested by cross-validation, and the results were compared using graphs and statistical indicators to the results obtained with observed data, measured in fluviometric reference stations. After analyzing the statistical indicators, such as the coefficient of determination (R2), the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency index (NSE), and the reservoir design quality index (IQD), it was concluded that the method proposed by Cesconetto (2021) showed a tendency to under-design the capacities of the reservoirs, mainly for lower flows to be regularized (β<0.75). The method proposed by Rodrigues (2017) performed better than the method proposed by Cesconetto (2021) for the design of the capacity of flow regulation reservoirs under conditions of limited data in the Itapemirim River Basin.
Mapping air temperature is essential for climate studies and its application in environmental, forest, and agri-cultural sciences, among others. This study aimed to spatialize daily air temperature data, creating a database corrected by the effect of relief. This study was performed in the state of Espirito Santo, Southeastern Brazil, which has an altitude range of 2892 m from the coast to the highest point in Serra do Capara ' o. Meteorological data were collected from 22 meteorological stations. The potential temperature equation and adiabatic lapse rate were used to estimate air temperature considering the effect of relief. These methods were compared with the inverse distance weighting (IDW) interpolator to evaluate the gain obtained by including topographic infor-mation in the temperature estimation. The performance of methods was evaluated by cross-validation, using the coefficient of determination (R2), bias, and mean absolute error (MAE). The method with the best performance in the spatialization of air temperature data was obtained by adjusting the temperature data for the same altitude condition, using the environmental lapse rate (-6.5 degrees C km-1) and the IDW interpolator to spatialize data. Finally, interpolated temperature values were adjusted for the original terrain altitude (-6.5 degrees C km-1), using the altitude existing in each pixel of a digital elevation model. This method provided a gain of 51% in the reduction of MAE values compared with the IDW interpolator, which does not consider the effect of relief. It was used to spatialize daily air temperature data (maximum, average, and minimum) for the entire territory of Espirito Santo, Brazil, with 500-m spatial resolution.
We applied a robust framework for agricultural drought identification in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, by employing the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) based on data obtained through the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). By doing so, we analyzed the interrelationships between the VCI and anomalies in the Land Surface Temperature (LST), along with connections between the VCI and data considering water deficits in vulnerable areas. When it came to image processing, we focused on the use of analytics and GIS algorithms, while the Scott–Knott method elucidated the statistical analyses. Consequently, we identified drought areas followed by periods susceptible to their occurrence, indicating 2016 as the driest year. The North macroregion presented the lowest average values regarding VCI values in the most vulnerable periods, followed by the Central one. We also call attention to the highest LST averages observed in 2015 and 2016, as strong El Niño events marked the same timeframe periods. The methodological approach was efficient for the identification, analysis, and characterization of agricultural drought occurrences, enabling mitigation actions, as well as the management of the exploitation and protection of water resources. Moreover, further research should be conducted by incorporating other indices to enhance the understanding of agricultural drought and its effects on vegetation.
This study aimed to assess monthly average daily global solar irradiation ( H_g^m) estimates in Southeastern Brazil from empirical models and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques using extreme air temperatures (maximum—Tx and minimum—Tn) and extraterrestrial solar irradiation ( H_0^m ) and evaluate the geographic and climate factors in the performance of the models or the AI techniques. The H_g^m , Tx and Tn data series from 95 automatic weather stations of the Brazilian National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) were used. The Hargreaves-Samani (HS) and Bristow-Campbell (BC) models were fitted, and AI techniques (artificial neural network—ANN and support vector machines—SVM) were trained, and assessed according to local climate conditions. Three input schemes in the AI techniques were assessed: (i) H_0^m , Tx, and Tn; (ii) H_0^m and air temperature amplitude (ΔT); and (iii) H_0^m , Tx, Tn, and ΔT. The coefficients of the HS (0.134 ≤ kr ≤ 0.262) and BC (0.539 ≤ β0 ≤ 0.796; 0.004 ≤ β1 ≤ 0.843; 0.35 ≤ β2 ≤ 2.60) models and their performance were influenced by climate, continentality/maritime effects, altitude and weather systems. The performance of the HS model was inferior to that of BC model and the SVM and ANN techniques. Overall, the SVN and ANN techniques performed better than the BC method. However, BC had similar or superior precision and accuracy to SVM and ANN for some climatic conditions and combinations of input variables. The quality of the H_g^m series, the combination of input variables, and climate influenced the estimates of the SVM and ANN techniques.
