United States'wood household, upholstered, and wood office furniture manufacturers were sampled to assess the volumes of several raw materials used in wood furniture in 1990, and to predict the volumes to be used in 1991 and 1992. Total hardwood lumber used in wood furniture was estimated at over 2.4 billion board feet in 1990. Use was expected to increase 13 percent from 1990 to 1992. Softwood lumber used in wood furniture in 1990 was estimated at over 839 million board feet. A 6 percent increase in softwood lumber use was expected from 1990 to 1992. Red oak was the most commonly used hardwood species and southern pine was the most used softwood
States that while mature industries are a major part of the US economy, little empirical information is available on competitive strategies appropriate in the mature environment. Discusses, via a case study of the US hardwood lumber industry, the idea that cost‐based strategies based on Overall Cost Leadership are not sufficient for mature basic industries. Concludes that the results offer understanding of the strategic changes which can occur during the maturity stage of the industry life cycle and recommends possible ways of competing in this environment.

Residential repair and remodeling (R&R) has experienced phenomenal growth over the last few decades. By most estimates, expenditures now top $100 billion with roughly three quarters being in the professional sector and one quarter in the do-it-yourself sector. To determine what factors contributed to the growth of this market for wood products and to provide a sketch of the growing professional R&R segment, data were retrieved from available literature and various other sources. High interest rates, rising new single-family home prices, the aging U.S. housing stock, and the volume of existing home sales are factors that have driven the growth of this market. Big-ticket items such as additions and bath and kitchen remodeling are the main area of growth. There is considerable overlap between new home construction and professional R&R, and estimates of the number of R&R firms vary widely (from 150,000 to as high as 1, 100,000). Regardless of the exact numbers, it is clear this is a growing market that deserves increased attention from wood products firms.
This note focuses on changes in the office furniture industry's use of wood-based materials between 1967 and 1987. The office furniture industry's importance relative to the wood household furniture industry, as a consumer of wood-based materials, has increased significantly since 1967. While the total use of all wood-based material inputs by the industry is at record levels, use of specific materials per unit of output has been mixed.
Business-level competitive strategy in the hardwood lumber industry was modeled through the identification of strategic groups among large U.S. hardwood lumber producers. Strategy was operationalized using a measure based on the variables developed by Dess and Davis (1984). Factor and duster analyses were used to define strategic groups along the dimensions of cost leadership, focus, and differentiation. A five strategic group model was identified and examined for strategic orientation and intragroup homogeneity. Two groups had no distinctive strategic orientation that suggested a competitive advantage; one group exhibited an overall cost leadership strategy; one exhibited a differentiation strategy; and one group exhibited a dual overall cost leadership/differentiation strategy. Strategic change in the industry was predicted to be primarily toward increased differentiation. Three strategic groups indicated significant change in this direction, and one group indicated an increase along both the focus and differentiation dimensions. For. Sci. 37(2):481-499.

Describes the uses and advantages of perceptual mapping, a consumer‐based modelling technique having both diagnostic and strategic applications, particularly in determining the threat posed by substitute products and in developing competitive strategies. Uses a case study approach of analysing companies in traditional manufacturing industries who are attempting to move from basic commodities to faster growing “value‐added” products. Concludes that perceptual maps are effective in developing new products and product positioning and can be easily used by managers in developing actions.
Editor’s Note: In Part 1 (July, 1990 issue), we described fied with all aspects of purchasing hardwood lumber. a survey of buyers at companies that purchase hardwood In particular, none of the dimension stock lumber. The companies represented potential customers in manufacturers were satisfied. Figure 1 indicates the five market segments: furniture, cabinet, dimension, flooring, and molding/millwork manufacturers. We also described the hardwood lumber purchasing characteristics of these companies. Part 2 discusses the reasons companies (buyers) are dissatisfied when purchasing hardwood lumber and the importance of various lumber and supplier characteristics.
This paper discusses some of the many problems in developing marketing programs for small wood products manufacturers. It examines the problems of using price as a dominant means for getting and attracting customers. The marketing of hardwood lumber to furniture producers is then used as an example. Data from 36 furniture lumber buyers is presented to illustrate various product and service attributes of hardwood lumber which can be emphasized other than low price.
North American producers of commodity-like wood products such as softwood dimension lumber and plywood face a considerable challenge in attempting to differentiate their product lines. Their main market, residential construction, accepts a system of standardized product grades recognized throughout North America, making product differentiation difficult. Some producers have vertically integrated into wholesale distribution to differentiate their products by better service and delivery [3]. Brand naming as a tool for differentiation has received only limited use, however, with a new family of reconstituted structural wood panels, most producers are now pursuing a branding strategy for these new products. Our goal in this study was to examine this change of strategy and its effectiveness.
Abstract The decision-maker in a logging firm should be keenly aware of what product-sorting intensity to select in order to maximize profitability and how stand parameters will affect profitability within any given logging chance. Computer simulation was used to examine the impact of various timber stand parameters on profitability of five timber harvesting systems operating under three product-sorting intensities. For the five harvesting systems assessed, felling and processing were accomplished manually and/or mechanically, and material was transported to a landing with forwarders or skidders. The study included both roundwood and whole-tree chips product forms. The forwarding system appears to be a profitable timber harvesting system, yielding the highest profitability index values under product sorting. The forwarding and whole-tree chip systems showed the highest profitability under a pulpwood-only harvest. The average number of trees per cord was most highly correlated with net present value for all roundwood harvesting systems.
