Summary First and Second Order Hearing. Why Listening is More than to Know what was Said In systemic discourse, visual metaphors are dominant, but conceptual material on hearing and listening is sparse. The literature on interviewing is primarily based on questions and not on listening. This essay describes the differences between hearing and listening and explores the importance of listening in therapy and counseling. Speaking and listening are presented as a two-way process, during which hidden aspects of experienced problems are identifiable (as a »topic behind the topic«) as well as possible solutions. Grasping different linguistic and paralinguistic elements of client narratives play a central role. Finally, the consequences of this conception regarding an active structuring of therapy sessions are discussed.

Summary The theoretical and practical issues of self-experience in the context of training in systemic therapy are discussed. Starting off with the problematic position of self-experience throughout the development of systemic therapy, some ideas concerning a systemic concept of self are presented. Self-experience is seen first of all as a development of person-related knowledge in training and - as such - part of a professionalization process. The possible content, settings and foci of self-experience are discussed, as they are part of the training at the APF institute in Cologne. Self-experience is distinguished from therapy and evaluation of personal aptitude.
Summary Starting with some definitions intimacy will be presented as an experience of intersubjectivity in a given historical and cultural context which demands own space and time to unfold and is interrelated with the social discourse on intimacy as well as gender perspectives in relationships. The clinical part gives some ideas to use intimacy as a multi-dimensional concept (emotional, sexual, social, intellectual, aesthetic, spiritual and recreational intimacy) in the course of couple therapies.
