Posterior-midgut homogenate from female stable flies prepared at 12 h after feeding hemolyzed erythrocytes from 6 different mammalian species more readily than homogenate prepared at 22 h. A significant correlation was obtained between the per cent sphingomyelin content of the erythrocyte membrane and the time required for lysis by the 12 h homogenate. Erythrocytes with low sphingomyelin content were more sensitive to lysis than cells with high sphingomyelin. No such correlation exists for hemolysis by 22 h homogenate. Mean corpuscular volume and osmotic fragilities of erythrocytes were not related to hemolysis either by 12 or 22 h homogenate. Determination of phospholipase C and sphingomyelinase activities showed that the hydrolysis rate of phospholipase C in homogenates prepared at 12–14 h was almost twice as much as sphingomyelinase activity. Whereas hydrolysis rates in 22–24 h homogenate were not different and markedly reduced compared to the 12–14 h homogenate. The times required for erythrocyte hemolysis related to the phospholipase C and sphingomyelinase activity profiles suggests that these enzyme activities participate in the in vitro hemolysis of red blood cells. Bovine and human erythrocytes change their biconcave contour into a spiculated spherical shape when they are exposed to midgut homogenate. This shape change is interpreted as a detergent induced modification of the red cell membrane which renders the erythrocytes more vulnerable to hemolysis.
In central Europe bees collect the honeydew from only few (58 known) species of Ster- norrhyncha (coccids, aphids, psyllids) (Table 1).This collecting it favored by an aggregation near the floral parts, in roll galls, and at the peripheral branches of trees combined with less visitation by ants.But 72.4 % of all species possess a filter chamber.As a consequence, these aphids secret 2-3 times more honeydew with 25-40% dry weight sucrose (from coccids and aphids) instead of less than 1 % sucrose found from aphids without a filter -gut.The appearance of other types of carbohydrates is discussed.Trehalose seems to occur in every honey-dew.Since raffinose is known to be widespread as a constituent of phloem sap, its occurence in honeydew is also discussed.Not all the aphids can assimilate raffinose as seen from the arti- ficial diet studies.The honeydew from M B persicae is collected by bees, and, on the other hand, these aphids can be reared on artificial diet well.As a model their nutritional physiology can be well studied, and some results are reviewed.At the end, significance of host plants is shown to the following items : summer depression in aphid populations, the analysis of phloem sap, influence of saliva in nutrition. The transpiration rate of adult males of the two cockroaches Periplaneta americana and Blaberus trapezoideus has been investigated by weight measurements and a tracer method.
Larvae of Hypoderma bovis can pour out their digestion-enzymes to the front (saliva or regurgitate of midgut) or to the back (by feces). Substrate labelled by radio-isotopes was rhythmically taken up every 7 hours ± 45 minutes, while the labelled feces were deposited continously.
By feeding131J mixed with a honey solution it was possible to label a colony ofLasius brunneus (LATR.) which is often a pest in buildings. Using a scintillation detector the distribution of the parts of the nest in an infested room could be determined. This was the precondition for a directed control. That method seems to be suitable also for a control ofMonomorium pharaonis (L.).
ZusammenfassungZusammenfassend sei festgestellt, daß die deutsche Beteiligung an Arbeiten auf dem Gebiete der Radioisotopenanwendung in der Entomologie zwar durchaus bedeutsam ist, jedoch vor allem das Interesse der angewandten Entomologie dringend einer Intensivierung bedarf. Diesem Ziel zu dienen war der Zweck des hier gegebenen Übersichtsreferates.
