Objectives: Speech materials validated with normal-hearing listeners may not be appropriate for clinical assessment of cochlear implant (CI) users. The aim of this study was to validate list equivalency of the Mandarin Speech Perception (MSP) sentences, disyllables, and monosyllables in Mandarin-speaking CI patients. Design: Recognition of MSP sentences, disyllables, and monosyllables each were measured for all 10 lists. Study sample: 67 adult and 32 pediatric Mandarin-speaking CI users. Results: There was no significant difference between adult and pediatric subject groups for all test materials. Significant differences were observed among lists within each test. After removing one or two lists within each test, no significant differences were observed among the remaining lists. While there was equal variance among lists within a given test, the variance was larger for children than for adults, and increased from monosyllables to disyllables to sentences. Conclusions: Some adjustment to test lists previously validated with CI simulations was needed to create perceptually equivalent lists for real CI users, suggesting that test materials should be validated in the targeted population. Differences in mean scores and variance across test materials suggest that CI users may differ in their ability to make use of contextual cues available in sentences and disyllables.

Objective To evaluate the inter-list equivalency of the sentence materials for Mandarin Speech Perception test(MSP) and modify it by measuring the speech recognition score of cochlear implant(CI) users. Methods According to Latin-Square design, sentence recognition scores(quiet background) were measured for each of the 10 phonemically balanced lists in 30 Mandarin-speaking CI users(aged 26.53±10.42 years,22.81±21.73 months for CI use time)in sound field.RM-ANOVA was administered to confirm the list equivalency. Results The speech recognition scores were 59.43%±29.69%,55.15%±29.11%,56.52%±31.64%,50.14%±28.58%,52.57%±30.05%,52.43%±29.63%,50.62%±31.31%,49.57%±29.23%,54.47%±30.37%,49.91%±30.86%,respectively for the 10 lists. There were significance differences in sentence recognition scores across the 10 sentence lists [F(9,261)=7.443,P<0.001].While the speech recognition scores were 54.50%±29.10%,53.22%±31.03%,52.65%±28.55%,52.54%±30.48%,52.50%±29.36%,respectively after the lists being assembled into 5 new lists with 20 sentences in each list, and they were all equivalent[F(4,116)=0.941,P=0.443]. ConclusionIt is necessary to validate the list equivalency of testing materials for speech audiometry in cochlear implant users, even after the validation in normal hearing listeners.Compared with the original version, the modified sentence materials of mandarin speech perception test may be useful and more accurate for assessing speech recognition performance of Mandarin-speaking CI users.
OBJECTIVE To find out whether cochlear implant users' speech recognition can be effected by speaking styles: slow, normal, fast, and whispered.METHODS In this study, speech recognition was measured in Mandarin-speaking CI and normal-hearing(NH)subjects,using sentences produced according to four styles: slow, normal, fast, and whispered.CI subjects were tested using their clinical processors;NH subjects were tested while listening to a four-channel CI simulation. The primary material was the same.RESULTS CI performance was generally similar to NH performance with the four-channel simulation.Performance gradually worsened with increasing speaking rate and was poorest with whispered speech.CONCLUSION Fast speaking and whispering may negatively affect Mandarin-speaking CI users' speech understanding.
Objective Traditionally, tone production is evaluated subjectively using human listeners. The present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of using an artificial neural network in evaluating tone production of Mandarin-speaking children. Methods The subject group included 61 normal-hearing children aged between 3 and 9 years old.The fundamental frequency(F0) of their produced monosyllabic words was extracted. The F0 were then used as inputs to a feed-forward backpropagation artificial neural network. The numbers of inputs and neurons in the hidden layer were 12 and 16,respectively.The output layer consisted of 4 neurons representing the 4 Mandarin tone patterns. The tone-recognition performance of the neural network was further compared with that of native-Mandarin-speaking adult listeners. Results The neural network successfully classified the tone patterns of the 61 children speakers with an accuracy of about 85% correct. The score was shown to be significantly better than the perception score by the adult listeners. There was individual variability in the children's tone production accuracy as revealed by both the tone recognition of the neural network and by the tone perception of the adult listeners. Conclusion This study demonstrates that the artificial neural network can successfully classify Mandarin-Chinese tone patterns produced by multiple children. The neural network can be used as an objective way of evaluating tone production of children.
