Over the past two decades, China's digital economy has emerged as one of the most dynamic and contested arenas of global capitalism. From the expansion of platform labor and automation workforces to the growth of digital cultural industries, technological innovation has become deeply intertwined with political authority, market governance, and everyday work. Yet, contrary to narratives that equate digitalization with market liberalization, China's digital transformation unfolds under a distinct state-mediated regime of governance-one that fuses socialist traditions of political control with market-oriented mechanisms of efficiency and accumulation. This thematic section examines how the Chinese state governs digital work across diverse sectors of the digital economy, from e-commerce, intelligent manufacturing, to creative production. Moving beyond the conventional state-versus-market paradigms, we investigate a mode of governance characterized by indirect yet decisive state influence, where platforms, skill regimes, and production models adapt to a policy environment shaped by regulatory uncertainty and developmental imperatives. By situating labor, technology, and governance within this evolving constellation, the articles in this thematic section advance a new framework for understanding the political economy of digital work under state-led digital capitalism.
China's manufacturing sector is undergoing rapid industrial upgrading, with automation driving demand for new occupational profiles and technical workers capable of managing complex production lines. Traditionally organized as a state-oriented labor regime, China's skill formation system now faces mounting pressure to adapt. Drawing on extensive fieldwork conducted between 2017 and 2023 in the automation industry, this article examines three main pathways of skill formation-enterprise-based on-the-job training, conventional vocational education, and commercial training offered by professional institutions-and analyzes the distinct roles of the state, firms, and private providers in this process. This article argues that a purely state-led approach is insufficient to meet current industrial needs, advocating instead for a more balanced model that combines policy guidance with market participation to better align worker skills with technological advancements. The findings contribute to broader debates on the political economy of skill formation and underscore the need for further research on the institutional dynamics of workforce development in late-industrializing economies.
China's relocation policy aims to alleviate poverty and promote urbanization by bringing poor households scattered across mountainous areas into new rural communities. This article argues that such resettlement often leads to the loss of social networks and livelihood opportunities owing to insufficient involvement of the relocated population. Based on fieldwork conducted between 2019 and 2023 in western China, we identify a double disembedding effect resulting from the relocation policy. This effect is manifest across the livelihood system, social networks, and political participation. As poor households migrate from their original village, spatial resettlement reconfigures their social relations from the original to the relocated communities, generating disruption in support networks. This article highlights how state-led resettlement policies, while intended to improve poor peasants' living conditions, may inadvertently undermine the social and economic foundations of relocated households. By examining these unintended consequences, we contribute to a broad discussion on the impact of state intervention in poverty alleviation and the need for more participatory approaches in the resettlement process of impoverished regions.
In recent years, the #MeToo movement has broadly empowered women, especially through online mobilization. However, little is known about how such mobilization has affected anti-harassment activism in nondemocratic regimes. China’s feminist activism is often confronted with a challenging political environment, and institutional mechanisms to handle harassment complaints are insufficient. Against this background, this study examines the mobilizing strategies of campus anti-harassment activism and its outcomes in China. Based on fieldwork examining a case study involving sexual harassment at a Chinese university, this study argues that the group of student activists was capable of implementing effective mobilization via social media; they made full use of both online public opinion and on-site activism to pressure school authorities. This study proposes the framework of “contagious media mobilization” to show how campus activists pursued their goals and desired outcomes. This exploration of the current dynamics of campus anti-harassment activism provides notable insights for future studies on youth politics.
This paper reviews the exploration and enrichment of Marxism’s Outlook on Science and Technology by the Chinese Communists in the course of a century. Spanning from the New Democratic Revolution to the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, the CPC has consistently regarded science and technology as a pivotal driver for national development, and has continuously advancing the integration of scientific and technological innovation with economic and social development. The article analyzes the strategic decisions and practical achievements of the Chinese Communists in advancing scientific and technological development across different historical stages and their role in bolstering national prosperity and strength, highlights the Chinese Communists' historical accountability and epochal mission of the Chinese Communists in the domain of science and technology in the times.
This article describes the ideological adaptation that occurred in China during the 1990s, when the reform of state-owned enterprises rearticulated the state-labor relationship. The market-oriented reform produced a series of meaning dislocations within the discursive field, departing from the traditional ideology of the party-state. By conducting discourse analysis on media reports published in the People's Daily, this article argues that the party-state deployed various discourse articulation practices to realize its ideological adaptation and maintain internal ideological consistency. Specifically, the party-state employed four types of 'interpretive packages' to reconcile the market reform's rationale with its own orthodox ideology, rearticulating the quadrilateral relationship among the workers, state enterprises, the party, and the government, as well as their roles within this ideological tradition. Discourse articulation has contributed greatly to the construction of a hegemony that constrains and fixes the new meanings stemming from the reform. However, it has also generated unintended consequences, such as conflicts among various discourse practices. The findings provide us with a pathway to understand how authoritarian states stabilize their ideology during periods of accelerated change and allow us to rethink the role of ideology in states' transformation, a topic that could be explored in future studies.
Background: The COVID-19 epidemic is a public health security event affecting the whole country, which has a certain impact on the development and current situation of the health field. As a special group, children and adolescents need to receive attention and special care. Purpose: To study the health status of children and adolescents under the influence of COVID-19. Method: To collect and analyze the physical, mental and mental health data of 448 children aged 3 - 18 years in the Pediatric Medical Center of the Second Hospital of Jilin University since the COVID-19 outbreak, so as to grasp the physical, mental and mental health status and existing problems of children and adolescents under the impact of COVID-19 outbreak. Results: Food (seafood, mangoes, dairy products, animal protein, soy, peanuts, etc.) is the main allergen in the children and adolescents who participated in the survey, followed by inhalation (pollen, cat and dog hair, etc.). The diet was relatively normal, but there were still unhealthy eating behaviors, the detection rate was 5.36%. High calorie diet, high cholesterol diet, high salt diet, low protein diet, liquid diet in order from high to low, 85.27% of the normal water intake, drinking behavior was greatly affected by the family environment and school environment. The main problem affecting children’s digestion is constipation. Functional constipation accounts for more than 90% of children’s constipation, and its causes are mainly genetic factors, metabolic factors, mental factors, diet factors, etc. Genetic factors and unreasonable diet are the causes of children’s research results show that among 448 children and adolescents, 425 are in normal mental conditions. 94.87%; 13, or 2.9%, were in the doldrums; There were 10 people in the state of hyperactivity, accounting for 2.23%, the main cause of functional. Conclusion: The health cloud platform was used to manage and analyze the data, in order to lay the foundation for the healthy growth and development of children and adolescents as well as the whole life cycle management of individual health.
Background With the rising of fertility cost and the implementation of the “universal three-child” policy, the model of intergenerational support for grandchild is becoming an inevitable choice for more and more families in China. As the number of grandchildren increases and the interval between births extends, will the grandchild care intention and grandparents’ health be affected? Methods Based on the data of China Family Panel Studies from 2018 and 2020, this study used multiple linear regression and multiple mediation tests to investigate the effect of grandchild care intention and intergenerational support on the health of older adults. Results Firstly, actively taking care of grandchild has increased the self-rated health and mental health of older adults by 11.8 and 10.7%, respectively. Secondly, there is heterogeneity in the effect of intergenerational support from adults on health in their parents, among them, economic support improves the physical health by 5.5%; life care increases the self-rated and physical health by 3.3 and 0.8% respectively; emotional comfort improves the physical and mental health by 2.5 and 2.9%, respectively. Thirdly, grandchild care intention has a mediating effect on the health of older adults through economic support, life care, and emotional comfort. Conclusion The grandchild care intention has positive effect on the health of older adults. The intergenerational supports (economic support, emotional comfort, and life care) have heterogeneous effects on the health of older adults, such as economic support mainly affects the physical health. Older adults who actively take care of their grandchild are more likely to gain intergenerational support and feedback from their adult children, transforming intergenerational support into a “win-win” model of resource reciprocity between generations. Based on this, it is necessary to re-establish the value identity of “caring for older adults” and “raising grandchildren” at the cultural level, continuously improve the fertility support policies at the government level and establish “caring for older adults” support platform at the social level.
Background Poverty is the greatest obstacle to the realization of human rights, among which illness is the leading cause in China. In 2015, China began to implement the health poverty alleviation project (HPAP). By 2020, all rural households living below the current poverty level (2300 yuan per person per year) have been lifted out of poverty. Methods This study introduces the concept of relative acquisition and constructs a scale based on the capability approach to measure the relative acquisition and compares its fairness of HPAP. Results The findings show that the values of the relative acquisition of HPAP in survey areas are all reached middle level (0.4–0.6), with 0 indicating the worst level and 1 indicating the best level. Specifically, the values of the functional activities of "health care", "health ability", "equal treatment opportunities" and "social support" are all above 0.4, while the values of "economic conditions" and "health education" are below 0.4. Conclusions The HPAP plays a significant role in reducing the economic burden of disease on patients. However, due to insufficient social support and health education, the HPAP objects lack endogenous motivation to fight against poverty, and the fairness also needs to be improved.
Enhancer of Zeste Homologue 2 (EZH2) as a histone methyltransferase epigenetically regulates laryngeal carcinoma (LGC) progression. The present study sought to explore the role and mechanism of EZH2 in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of LGC cells. Expressions of EZH2, secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1), and trimethylation of lysine 27 on histone H3 (H3K27me3) in LGC tissues or cells were detected via reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blotting. Upon transfection of si-EZH2, si-SFRP1, oe-SFRP1, or H3K27me3 upregulation, cell viability was assessed via cell counting kit-8, protein levels of E-cadherin, N-cadherin, β-catenin, c-Myc, and Cyclin D1 were determined via western blotting, and Vimentin expression was determined via immunofluorescence. The enrichment level of H3K27me3 in the SFRP1 promoter was measured via chromatin immunoprecipitation-PCR. EZH2 was highly expressed in LGC tissues and cells. Silencing EZH2 repelled the EMT of LGC cells. Mechanically, EZH2 upregulated H3K27me3 in the SFRP1 promotor to inhibit SFRP1 expression, and SFRP1 overexpression inactivated the Wnt pathway. H3K27me3 upregulation or SFRP1 downregulation reversed the inhibition of silencing EZH2 in the EMT of LGC cells. Overall, EZH2 upregulated H3K27me3 in the SFRP1 promoter to inhibit SFRP1 expression and activate the Wnt pathway, thereby facilitating the EMT of LGC cells.
To investigate whether peripheral neuropathy scale scores are associated with myocardial infarction (MI) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
We aimed to explore the mechanism for hydrogen in the treatment of neuropathic pain in diabetic rats.Eight-week-old male SD rats were randomly divided into control, model and hydrogen treatment groups.Th e hydrogen treatment group was intraperitoneally injected with hydrogen-rich saline daily in 7 th and 8 th weeks aft er modeling.Before and 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks aft er modeling, the neurological function, behavioral changes and levels of infl ammatory factors TNF-α and IL-6 in the sciatic nerve were detected, and MCP1 and CCR2 protein expressions were measured by Western blotting.Compared with the model group, the hydrogen treatment group had significantly increased motor nerve conduction velocity, thermal withdrawal latency and mechanical withdrawal threshold (P<0.05).Th e significantly higher levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in the sciatic nerve of the model group than those of the control group decreased in the hydrogen treatment group (P<0.05).Th e protein expressions of MCP1 and CCR2 in the sciatic nerve of the model group significantly exceeded those of the control group.Such expressions of the hydrogen treatment group were lower than those of the model group.Hydrogen alleviated the inflammatory response of peripheral nerves in diabetic rats by inhibiting the MCP1-CCR2 signaling pathway, thus mitigating neuropathic pain.
Background Bladder cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the urinary system. Surgical resection and chemotherapy are the two mainstream treatments for bladder cancer. However, the outcomes are not satisfactory for patients with advanced bladder cancer. There is a need to further explore more effective targeted therapeutic strategies. Methods Proteomics were performed to compare protein expression differences between human bladder cancer tissues and adjacent normal tissues. The function of GPD1 on bladder cancer cells were confirmed through in vivo and in vitro assays. Transcriptomics and metabolomics were performed to reveal the underlying mechanisms of GPD1. Virtual screening was used to identify allosteric activator of GPD1. Results Here, we used proteomics to find that GPD1 expression was at low levels in bladder cancer tissues. Further investigation showed that GPD1 overexpression significantly promoted apoptosis in bladder cancer cells. Based on transcriptomics and metabolomics, GPD1 promotes Ca2+ influx and apoptosis of tumor cells via the lysoPC-PAFR-TRPV2 axis. Finally, we performed a virtual screening to obtain the GPD1 allosteric activator wedelolactone and demonstrated its ability to inhibit bladder tumor growth in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions This study suggests that GPD1 may act as a novel tumor suppressor in bladder cancer. Pharmacological activation of GPD1 is a potential therapeutic approach for bladder cancer.

Olfactory impairment is related to neurodegenerative diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM); however, the cognitive alterations of patients with DPN and the role of olfactory function in DPN are not known. We explored alterations in cognition with DPN and the associations of neuropathy parameters with cognition and olfaction. Methods Healthy controls (HCs) and patients with T2DM underwent nerve-conduction tests, detailed cognitive assessment, olfactory-behavior tests, and odor-induced functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). T2DM patients were divided into two groups (non-DPN [NDPN] and DPN). Olfactory brain regions showing different activation between the two groups were selected for functional connectivity (FC) analyses. A structural equation model (SEM) was also generated to demonstrate the association among cognition, olfactory, and neuropathy parameters. Results One hundred individuals (36 HCs, 36 NDPN, and 28 DPN) were matched for age, sex, and educational level. Compared with the NDPN group, the DPN group had significantly lower scores for memory and processing speed, as well as lower olfactory identification and memory scores, decreased activation of the left frontal lobe, and reduced seed-based functional connectivity in the right insula. The nerve conduction velocity in patients with T2DM was associated with cognitive functions. The association between nerve conduction and executive function was mediated by olfactory behavior. Conclusion Patients with DPN had worse cognition than the NDPN patients in the domains of memory and processing speed. Cognitive dysfunction could be predicted by olfactory-behavior tests and electrophysiological examination.

BackgroundThe clinical characteristics and outcomes of small fibre neuropathy (SFN) in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes have not been thoroughly described, and we investigated metabolic and neurological indexes and the prognosis of type 2 diabetic patients based on skin biopsy. MethodsThirty-four healthy Chinese volunteers were recruited for skin biopsy to establish the reference range of intraepidermal nerve fibre density (IENFD). Eighty-nine patients with type 2 diabetes from the Department of Endocrinology at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital between December 2015 and April 2020 were included in the final study. Metabolic and neurological indexes were evaluated at baseline. Diabetic cardiovascular autonomic function was tested through cardiovascular autonomic reflex tests (CARTs). Seventeen pure SFN subjects and 9 mixed diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) subjects were reassessed after the follow-up. ResultsLevels of HbA1c and postprandial blood glucose were lower (P=0.005 and P=0.041, respectively), while postprandial C-peptide and insulin were higher (P=0.001 and P=0.019, respectively) in the pure SFN group than in the mixed DPN group. Regarding the CARTs, the mixed DPN group obtained the highest score, indicating the worst cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN). Among the four CART items, postural BP change was lower while deep breathing max-min was higher in the pure SFN group than in the mixed DPN group (P=0.023 and P=0.040, respectively). A partial correlation showed that there was a negative correlation between IENFD of the distal leg and CART scores (r=-0.513, P=0.001) after adjusting for age and duration of diabetes. Only vitamin B12 (p=0.028) and motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) of the common peroneal nerve (p=0.045) were increased in the 17 patients with pure SFN after the follow-up. However, MCVs of the common peroneal nerve (p=0.025) and tibial nerve (p=0.047) were decreased at the final visit in the mixed DPN group. ConclusionsBetter islet function and cardiovascular autonomic function were observed in patients with pure SFN compared with mixed DPN. CART scores were negatively correlated with IENFD in the distal leg even after adjusting for age and duration of diabetes. The metabolic and neurological indexes remained relatively stable in the follow-up of pure SFN subjects.
Aim: To compare the efficacy and safety of LY2963016 insulin glargine (LY IGlar) with insulin glargine (Lantus; IGlar) combined with oral antihyperglycaemic medications (OAMs) in insulin-naive Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Materials and Methods: In this phase III, open-label trial, adult patients with T2D receiving two or more OAMs at stable doses for 12 weeks or longer, with HbA1c of 7.0% or more and 11.0% or less, were randomized (2:1) to receive once-daily LY IGlar or IGlar for 24 weeks. The primary outcome was non-inferiority of LY IGlar to IGlar at a 0.4% margin, and a gated secondary endpoint tested non-inferiority of IGlar to LY IGlar (-0.4% margin), assessed by least squares (LS) mean change in HbA1c from baseline to 24 weeks. Results: Patients assigned to LY IGlar (n = 359) and IGlar (n = 177) achieved similar and significant reductions (p < .001) in HbA1c from baseline. LY IGlar was non-inferior to IGlar for change in HbA1c from baseline to week 24 (-1.27% vs. -1.23%; LS mean difference: -0.05% [95% CI, -0.19% to 0.10%]) and IGlar was non-inferior to LY IGlar. The study therefore showed equivalence of LY IGlar and IGlar for the primary endpoint. At week 24, there were no between-group differences in the proportion of patients achieving an HbA1c of less than 7.0%, seven-point self-measured blood glucose, insulin dose or weight gain. Adverse events, allergic reactions, hypoglycaemia and insulin antibodies were similar in the two groups. Conclusions: Once-daily LY IGlar and IGlar, combined with OAMs, provide effective and similar glycaemic control with comparable safety profiles in insulin-naive Chinese patients with T2D.
