In den 20er Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts gelang der Durchbruch zu einer der bedeutendsten wissenschaftlichen Leistungen der Neuzeit, zur Quantenmechanik. In diesen wenigen Jahren – die Hauptperiode geht von 1924 bis 1927 – ist eine ungeheuere Intensität des Forschens und Lernens zu beobachten. Die damalige Physik brachte nicht nur revolutionäre neue Erkenntnisse hervor, sondern auch eine neuartige Art und Weise des Zusammenwirkens der Forscher. Im Folgenden wird der Schwerpunkt auf die Darlegung dieser veränderten Arbeitsweise der Wissenschaftler gelegt, die den sozialen und forschungsorganisatorischen Nährboden bildete, aus dem die Quantentheorie erwachsen konnte.
