Interactions between people and wildlife are increasing as development encroaches on natural habitats. Concurrently, young mammals suspected to be orphans are brought to wildlife rehabilitation centers. Four common orphaned mammals presented to rehabilitation facilities in North America are the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana, DIVI), common raccoon (Procyon lotor, PRLO), eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis, SCCA), and eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus, SYFL). This study examined the spatial relationship between the originating locations of orphans presented to the University of Illinois Wildlife Medical Clinic within Champaign County from 2015 to 2020 (99 Virginia opossums, 80 common raccoons, 441 eastern gray squirrels, and 602 eastern cottontails) and their environment. Environmental factors evaluated included land development, distance to water, and percentage of tree canopy. Spatial and multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that human-wildlife interactions frequently occurred near human developments and varied based on species-specific habitat preferences. Human-wildlife interactions tend to cluster around ecosystems that are selected by both parties. Our findings can inform outreach strategies aimed at reducing unnecessary wildlife admissions and improving resource allocation.
There is an urgent need for the expansion of climate change education for all health professionals, including veterinarians. Recognizing this, the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges released a position statement in 2023 urging the incorporation of climate change education into veterinary curriculums. However, there are currently no guidelines on how to implement this. Here we propose an educational framework, developed through a review of the literature and expert input, upon which to build veterinary-specific climate content. The framework includes four complementary domains: animal health management, resilient veterinary systems, mitigation of veterinary-related climate hazards, and broad community engagement on climate change. These domains are connected by two important threads, foundational knowledge and continuous learning, that highlight the dynamic nature of climate science and current and anticipated health impacts. The framework aims to serve as a starting point for developing, and sharing, climate change educational resources in veterinary medicine.
Free-ranging red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) commonly present to wildlife facilities and veterinary clinics for injury or illness, and bloodwork is often an essential tool in their diagnostic workup. However, the type of anticoagulant used and the sample storage time prior to processing may potentially impact hematological values. This study evaluated differences between EDTA and lithium heparin (HEP) preserved blood samples in packed cell volume (PCV), total solids (TS), estimated WBC counts by smear, and WBC differential counts. Additionally, differences in estimated WBC counts and WBC differential counts between anticoagulant-free (AF) and anticoagulant preserved blood smears were evaluated. Values were compared at time of blood collection and again after refrigeration for two, six, and 24 hours. Packed cell volume and TS were not significantly different between type of anticoagulant or time stored. Statistically significant differences in estimated WBC counts between AF samples and ETDA samples were found at all time points after time of collection (p = 0.025, 0.021, 0.010 for t = 2, 6, 24, respectively), while no differences were noted between AF samples and HEP samples. White blood cell differential count was impacted with variable significance by both time and anticoagulant. Clinically, HEP should be considered the anticoagulant of choice in this species and consideration should be taken to evaluate samples as close to collection time as possible.
ObjectivesKyasanur forest disease (KFD) is a tick-borne disease in India affecting humans and two local non-human primate species. A critical knowledge gap in the scientific literature is the lack of information on how people's sociodemographic factors influence KFD occurrence.MethodsWe analyzed available data on KFD from three data sources: (a) 104 peer-reviewed articles using keyword searches on PubMed Central and Google Scholar, (b) 116 Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases reports, and (c) an acute febrile illness surveillance data set on KFD from a report by the government of India. We performed statistical analyses to calculate the prevalence of KFD by state and differences in KFD cases by sex and age group.ResultsAll three data sets used indicate that KFD cases and deaths have occurred predominantly in the 15-64 years age group (literature: 87% cases and 95% deaths, Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases: 78% cases and 78% deaths, acute febrile illness: 96% cases [no breakdown for acute febrile illness death data]). Data reporting varies across states and is non-standardized.ConclusionsThe inconsistent reporting of sociodemographic data on KFD in India has created a gap in our understanding of its impact on different social groups. Collecting and reporting data on sociodemographic factors is critical to understanding the epidemiology of KFD and designing effective public health interventions.
Topical therapy is preferred for otitis externa (OE) in dogs. Otic products commonly contain glucocorticoids that can be systemically absorbed and possibly interfere with diagnostic tests such as intradermal testing (IDT). To determine the effect of a long-lasting otic solution containing mometasone furoate (MF) on IDT immediate reactions and to determine withdrawal time before IDT. Seventeen dogs with healthy ears (Group 1) and 12 with OE (Group 2). Intradermal injections of histamine, anticanine-immunoglobulin (Ig)E and saline were subjectively and objectively evaluated before treatment and weekly for 6 weeks, after a single application of a long-lasting otic solution containing MF. Statistically significant reductions in the mean subjective histamine scores after application of MF were observed at Weeks 1 ( p = 0.012) and 2 ( p = 0.028) in Group 1, and Weeks 1 ( p = 0.00066), 2 ( p = 0.02) and 4 ( p = 0.034) in Group 2. Mean histamine objective scores were significantly reduced in Weeks 1 ( p = 0.042), 2 ( p = 0.0009), 3 ( p = 0.001) and 5 ( p = 0.018) in Group 1 only. The mean subjective anticanine-IgE scores were significantly reduced in Week 1 in both groups ( p = 0.003, p = 0.0066), respectively. There were no significant changes in the mean anticanine-IgE objective score in either group. Application of a long-lasting otic solution containing MF can interfere with IDT immediate reactions in healthy and OE dogs. Based on the subjective evaluation, IDT can be performed ≥2 weeks after application of the otic solution in healthy dogs, and ≥4 weeks in dogs with OE.
The Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) is the only marsupial in North America with a natural range north of Mexico. Its range is widespread throughout the United States, including Illinois. Virginia opossums are opportunistic omnivores that will eat a variety of fruits, grains, insects, and even carrion. They are a ground-foraging species, with frequent soil contact allowing for potential exposure to heavy metal contaminants in terrestrial environments. They are also opportunists that thrive in human-altered ecosystems, including peri-urban environments. Lead is a naturally occurring element and highly toxic metal that is abundant in the soil, primarily due to anthropogenic factors such as fossil fuel use, paint, industrial production waste, and battery recycling. Furthermore, carrion and offal piles containing lead bullet fragments remaining from hunting result in environmental contamination of this heavy metal. Few studies exist on lead exposure in the Virginia opossum. This pilot study evaluates the blood lead burden of 16 free-ranging Virginia opossums presented to a wildlife rehabilitation facility, compared with 16 wild-caught Virginia opossums trapped in grassland, maintained forest, or mixed ecotones. In other species, lead toxicosis has been associated with cognitive dysfunction that may increase the likelihood of trauma or injury in a free-ranging setting. In addition, a high incidence of Virginia opossums presenting for wildlife rehabilitation do so as result of human-animal conflict. Therefore, it was anticipated that individuals presenting for wildlife rehabilitation would have significantly higher blood lead concentrations than their free-roaming counterparts. In this study, every Virginia opossum had measurable blood lead concentrations and the average blood lead concentration of the rehabilitated group was 2.7 times higher than that measured in wild-caught Virginia opossums. These results suggest that Virginia opossums are exposed and susceptible to lead toxicosis due to their diet and foraging behaviors, making them more prone to subsequent injury and presentation to wildlife rehabilitation centers.
Increased incidence of zoonoses, coupled with veterinarians’ occupational exposure, led to this study examining the knowledge of licensed US veterinarians on zoonoses and their disease prevention practices. This online survey supported by the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians received 466 responses from 36 US states; 67% of the respondents were female, and 72.5% were small animal medicine practitioners. The One Health concept was familiar among 82% of respondents, 51.3% knew of continuing education training on zoonoses, and 68% had attended such a training in the last 5 years. Respondents were unaware of which zoonoses to report to public health departments. For 3 out of 8 questions on standard operating procedures, statistically significant differences in protocols followed among small, large, and mixed animal medicine practitioners were observed. Most respondents believed they play a critical role in zoonoses prevention but would like more information on zoonotic diseases. Results indicate that assisting veterinarians with regularly updated information on zoonoses, providing targeted education and training to adhere to standardized infection control measures, and increasing communication with public health agencies and physicians may help prevent and reduce incidence of zoonoses.
AIMS:Judicious antimicrobial use in companion animal practice is critical for maintaining the effectiveness of antimicrobial agents against bacterial infections and reducing the selection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. This study aimed to provide insights into companion animal veterinarians' antimicrobial treatment recommendations for common bacterial infections in dogs and cats and describe the factors influencing their prescription choices. METHODS AND RESULTS:An online survey using QualtricsXM® software was administered between September and November 2022 to companion animal veterinarians who were Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association members. Descriptive and text analyses were conducted to assess the participants' responses. A total of 78 surveys were included in the analysis. Skin infections were ranked as the most common bacterial infections for which veterinarians prescribed antimicrobial agents, followed by ear, urinary tract, respiratory, and enteric infections. The severity of clinical symptoms and the results of bacterial culture and susceptibility tests were the most influential factors for veterinarians when making antimicrobial prescription choices. Veterinarians were aware of the current antimicrobial prescription guideline recommendations when prescribing antimicrobials empirically to nine hypothetical scenarios of bacterial infections. According to the results of the text analysis that assessed veterinarians' responses to an open-ended question, regarding their challenges when prescribing antimicrobial agents, the pairwise correlation of word frequencies within each response showed the highest correlations between the words 'owner' and 'compliance', 'administration' and 'route', 'cost' and 'culture', and 'patients' and 'acceptance'. CONCLUSIONS:The study results can support animal health stakeholders in the development of antimicrobial stewardship programmes to promote appropriate antimicrobial use and limit the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

A wide range of pharmaceutical chemicals have been documented in rivers, streams, lakes, coastal waters, groundwater, sewage sludge, landfill leachate, soils, air, and plant and animal tissues nationwide and around the world. Veterinarians’ unique relationship with pharmaceuticals compared to other health professionals provide a wide breath of potential pathways. Given the role that veterinarians can play as both a source of new pharmaceuticals to the environment and a method of drug disposal, as well as their role as trusted professionals, the veterinarian is key to keeping unused and unwanted medicine out of the environment. However, little is known about their behaviors. The objectives were to: learn about the drug disposal practices of the veterinarian and their clients from the veterinarian’s perspective; learn about the importance of the topic of drug disposal to veterinarians; and determine the outreach needs and preferences of veterinarians and how best to educate about this issue. This research was conducted through a cross-sectional online survey of licensed veterinarians in states within the Great Lakes region working with those states’ veterinary medical associations or licensing boards. The 587 respondents were 72% female, 81% small animal practice, and 52% practicing in suburban geographic areas. Legal disposal requirements were the biggest factor influencing veterinarians to change pharmaceutical disposal behaviors followed by avoiding misuse and abuse. Veterinarians discussed disposal with clients in only 11% of appointments with clients. The most notable barriers include not remembering to mention, not enough time, not high enough priority, or not enough information known by the veterinarian. Continuing education opportunities need to be provided across the spectrum of practicing veterinarians so they can have a greater understanding of the problem of pharmaceutical waste and potential avenues they can implement to mitigate.
Our ability to tackle the looming human, animal, and global ecosystem health threats arising from the issues of climate change and extreme weather events will require effective and creative cross-disciplinary collaboration. There is a growing national and international interest in equipping the next generation of clinicians and health scientists for success in facing these important challenges by providing interprofessional training opportunities. This paper describes how we assembled an interdisciplinary team of experts to design and deliver a case-based discussion on a cross-species illness outbreak in animals and humans using a One Health framework. The small group, case-based approach highlighted the impact of climate change-driven extreme weather events on human and animal health using a diarrhea outbreak associated with a contaminated community water supply precipitated by extreme flooding. Post-activity survey data indicated that this team-taught learning activity successfully engaged a cross-disciplinary cohort of medical, veterinary, and public health students in the issues of environmental public health threats and helped them understand the importance of an integrative, cross-functional, team-based approach for solving complex problems. The data from this study is being used to plan similar interprofessional, One Health learning activities across the health sciences curriculum in our institution.
Focus groups allow researchers to collect data from multiple participants on a set of questions while simultaneously observing participant interactions during sessions. Traditionally, researchers conduct focus groups in person, though online focus groups have been increasingly used as technologies have improved. The pandemic increased the need for researchers to innovate online focus group practices. This paper aims to present best practices for using annotation functions on digital video conference platforms to conduct focus group interviews in veterinary medicine education research. We explain how Zoom, specifically its Annotate functions, offers a useful tool to facilitate online focus groups and assist veterinary medicine education research and practice. This method addresses many of the challenges that in-person focus groups have-dominant participants, geographical barriers, and confidential (instead of anonymous) participation-while still being able to collect quality data during a group interview. The best practices described here allow for capturing both qualitative and quantitative data from online participants while preserving their anonymity and increasing the ease of participation. Based on data we have collected, participants report being comfortable providing honest and direct responses across a variety of questions. This practice also allows the collection of simultaneous or delayed answers, which means that participants have more flexibility in how and when they respond compared to many in-person focus groups. This practical approach to online focus group research can assist in conducting veterinary medicine education research not just during the pandemic but whenever geographical barriers or a need for increased confidentiality are researcher concerns.
Veterinarians are established public health professionals, committing to promote public health when they take their veterinary oath. The issue of climate change and its impact on planetary health is vital to public health, and therefore, it is critical that climate change is regarded as within the veterinary scope of practice. However, climate change is a multi-faceted issue which requires interdisciplinary collaboration and integrated stakeholder involvement in order to establish effective solutions and impactful policies. As a result, in this perspective, we discuss how policy is critical to support veterinarians in the climate change space and argue that more explicit support is needed for veterinarians to take an active role in climate change adaption, resilience, and mitigation. We address the discrepancies between the human health and veterinary professions with respect to providing policy support and capacity for practitioners to be stewards to promote planetary health and shed light on the lack of veterinary capacity in this area. We stress that veterinary professional societies are well equipped to bolster their policies, expand education for veterinary professionals and students in policy and advocacy, and establish calls to action to address climate change and planetary health issues. Ultimately, as public health professionals, veterinarians are uniquely poised to be contributors to climate change solutions and they should be actively involved in policy decision-making and empowered to take active roles in interdisciplinary conversations surrounding this important issue.
BACKGROUND:The diagnosis of neoplastic cavitary effusions requires the identification of neoplastic cells in effusions, yet the cytologic appearance of neoplastic effusions can be highly variable due to the varied mechanisms of formation. Additional parameters might aid in the interpretation of equivocal cytologic results.OBJECTIVES:Our goal was to evaluate whether total protein concentrations can be used to support the diagnosis of neoplasia in the peritoneal and pleural effusions of dogs with lower cellularities (≤5000 nucleated cells/μL).METHODS:Pleural and peritoneal fluid analyses from dogs presented to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital between 2014 and 2019 were evaluated retrospectively. Effusions were categorized as neoplastic or non-neoplastic based on histology or cytology. Non-neoplastic effusions were subcategorized according to mechanism: decreased oncotic pressure, increased hydrostatic pressure, increased vascular permeability, leakage of urine, and leakage of lymph. The TP and blood albumin to fluid TP ratio (Albblood :TPfluid ) were compared among groups.RESULTS:Twenty-seven neoplastic and 65 non-neoplastic cases were evaluated. TP was higher in the neoplastic group (P = .001) than in the non-neoplastic group. Neoplastic effusions had a lower Albblood :TPfluid than non-neoplastic (P = .001), and effusions with Albblood :TPfluid of ≤0.6 were 5.6 times more likely to be neoplastic (95% CI 1.69-17.36; P = .003).CONCLUSIONS:Fluid TP concentrations were significantly greater in neoplastic than non-neoplastic effusions; however, given the considerable overlap between groups, the diagnostic utility of this difference is low. A neoplastic etiology might be more likely in cases with an Albblood :TPfluid ≤0.6.
In dogs, primary bone tumors can be difficult to distinguish with histopathology. Of those tumors, osteosarcoma (OSA) is the most common and aggressive. In this study, 4 immunohistochemistry markers-alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteonectin (ON), osteopontin (OP), and runx2-were evaluated for their ability to distinguish OSA from other primary bone tumors. The 42 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded, primary canine bone tumors included 15 OSAs, 8 chondrosarcomas, 11 fibrosarcomas, and 8 histiocytic sarcomas. All 4 antibodies were highly sensitive for detection of osteosarcoma. ALP was the most sensitive at 100% and runx2 the most specific at 78%. Running ALP and runx2 in series resulted in a sensitivity of 87% and a specificity of 85%. This combination of immunomarkers resulted in a diagnostic panel for distinguishing osteosarcoma from other primary bone tumors.
Antimicrobial stewardship is becoming more important every day with increasing bacterial resistance and limitations on antibiotics. Prophylactic antibiotics are not necessary with all procedures, which has been shown previously with a variety of human and veterinary surgeries. Medical records were retrospectively evaluated for cases who had a cutaneous punch biopsy performed between 2013 and 2018 including the following information: species, signalment, concurrent diseases, concurrent medications, location of biopsy, histopathologic diagnosis, and bacterial infections postoperatively. The prevalence of secondary infections, due to punch biopsies in all animals, was 1.9% and further divided into 2.3% (3/128) of dogs and 0% (0/26) of cats. It was determined that the relative risk of developing complications from punch biopsy was 0.06 (0.01-0.93) when diagnosing a dermatologic disease versus a cutaneous mass (neoplastic and nonneoplastic), which was statistically significant. The risk increased 2.16 (0.16-59.91) times if the biopsy site was the trunk, which includes the neck, thorax, and abdomen. These results indicate that in veterinary medicine, postoperative complications are uncommon with cutaneous punch biopsies. The administration of prophylactic antibiotics in dogs and cats is unnecessary when performing a punch biopsy when there is no infection present at the time of biopsy.
Kyasanur Forest disease (KFD) is a tickborne hemorrhagic disease affecting primates along the Western Ghats mountain range in India. Our retrospective study indicated that >3,314 monkey deaths attributed to KFD were reported in KFD-endemic states in India during 1957–2020. These data can help guide surveillance to protect animal and human health.
Currently, more than 20% (51/240) of zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums house African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) in their collections. The African penguin Species Survival Plan (SSP) veterinary advisors regularly collect information from those facilities to characterize morbidity and mortality for this species and to collate preventative medicine and treatment regimens. These efforts resulted in more than 10 yr of collection of management data across the SSP, representing the care and management of more than a thousand birds. The most common morbidities reported included those of dermatologic (27%, 125/452 institutions) and musculoskeletal or neurologic (18%, 82/452 institutions) disease, while the most common causes of mortality were respiratory diseases (20%, 65/323 deaths) and systemic or multifactorial conditions (19%, 62/323 deaths). Aspergillosis cases accounted for 69% (45/65 deaths) of respiratory-related mortality and avian malaria cases comprised 31% (19/62 deaths) of mortality related to systemic diseases. Mortality was most commonly reported in geriatric birds, or those older than 15 yr of age (34%, 111/323 deaths). Reproductive related mortality was only defined in female birds, while other causes of death were more evenly distributed between sexes. Utilizing the SSP data to determine morbidity and mortality trends within this population provides important information to veterinary and animal care teams, allowing them to provide enhanced levels of care to the penguins housed at their institutions. By recognizing the most important diseases and causes of death in this species, management and healthcare resources can target conditions with the highest impact on the population.
