The goal of this article is to present the IT platform that was designed and developed for control and monitoring of the thermally active clothing. It consists of several independent components: mobile application, web application, server with a database and data analyzer. First part of the article presents structure and functionalities of the components as well as the communication protocol. Following part of the article presents conducted experiments, preliminary conclusions and future challenges for system authors.
Event-driven monitoring policies enable to significantly reduce the power consumption of wireless sensor networks by reducing the recording period to those time intervals that provide valuable data. The resulting longer operation lifetime increase discloses fields of application that require long monitoring periods. This paper presents a structural monitoring system that uses specialized sentinel nodes for detecting possibly heavy road vehicles and for alarming monitoring nodes, which are specialized on strain sensing. Heavy vehicles are identified by estimating nearly in real time height and length of vehicles of a traffic flow by processing data recorded from low-cost ultrasonic and magnetic displacement sensors. Field tests demonstrated that while height detection is very reliable, length detection is too imprecise to discriminate with high success rates between trucks and delivery vans.
Due to the increasing traffic volume on the European railway network, the remaining fatigue life of existing steel bridges is a major concern. Several investigations demonstrated that supplementing the assessment with monitoring data enables to achieve more reliable remaining fatigue life estimations. In this paper, an event-driven monitoring system based on a wireless sensor network that consists of two functionally different components was designed and tested. Sentinel nodes, which were mounted on the track, were used for detecting approaching trains and alerting with alarm messages the monitoring nodes. These nodes, which were mounted on the bridge, started strain sensing and data recording after receiving the alarm message and went back to a power saving mode upon completion. An embedded data processing algorithm transformed the recorded raw data into a much smaller data set representing strain cycles. A test deployment on a railway bridge demonstrated that train detection and alarming was fast and reliable. The combination of event-driven monitoring and embedded data processing allowed to extend the battery lifetime of monitoring nodes to several months.
The following paper describes architecture of the Wireless Vehicle Weight Measurement System (WVWMS). The challenge was to design a road scale system enabling multipoint vehicle weight with the single network sink. The proposed platform is capable of weight measurement based on electrical strain gauge weight pads and in-node data processing. Communication is wireless, with mesh networking. The developed vehicle weight measurement is one of subsystems applied in the TULCOEMPA project. It is required to cooperate with Structural Health Monitoring and Truck Recognition Systems. Due to the absence of mains line, all installations are powered by Hybrid Power System. The authors propose Energy Harvesting Controller cooperating with both solar panels and wind generators. The controller enables efficient energy harvesting from both power sources as well as monitoring of generated and consumed power levels. Next challenge was a design of vehicle weight data acquisition software architecture. The solution includes application of modern architectural concepts in software design, Representational State Transfer (REST), Model-View-View Model (MVVM) paradigm, and cloud computing. Communication between vehicle weight measurement modules and server application is described.
In this article a distributed system for noise levels monitoring created for generating acoustic maps of urban areas is introduced. The system comprises of a set of separated nodes interconnected via an ad hoc wireless network. It is also created for use with Google Android operating system which makes it available for use in a wide range of cellular phones available today.
The aim of this article is to present a management supporting system which follows unique project management methodology. The article shows how to integrate different frameworks, libraries and technologies working on Java Enterprise Edition platform in order to create fully operable and very useful internet application.
Advanced computer analysis of human voice is still time and memory consuming process. One of the greatest problems is reduction of time calculations to obtain the proper results, even for relatively short samples of the voice. All signal processing operations require significant number of calculations, therefore we propose to exploit parallel processing capabilities of graphical processor. Due to requirements of graphics generation, graphical processing units have become specialized chipsets with multi-core architecture, capable of executing a single instruction set on multiple sets of data. This approach is desirable in data intensive calculations, therefore special libraries were made by graphic chips manufacturers, to enable an use of these chips in non-graphical applications. It is demonstrated in this paper that using graphical processors for signal processing, results can be obtained in a shorter time, feasible for processing of multiple full length samples.
The article, by describing features of sample application for project management, presents methods of creating graphical interfaces of modern applications that run in web browser environment. Sample program is written with the use of FLEX Framework and some FLEX supporting tools. The FLEX technology is described as well as other RIA techniques.
The aim of the research presented in this paper was to analyze different e-learning solutions and compare them in the field of functionality and standards compatibility. As most popular applications Moodle, WBT and EXE programs have been chosen. The possibility of export/import courses between them has been discussed.
Article presents a way of providing a project management support through web based application, using Open Source solutions. First the architecture is discussed, then consequently layers of the architecture are described, additionally possible further developments are mentioned.
