The Port of Rotterdam (PoR) is expanding the ‘Maasvlakte’ harbor on reclaimed land. In order to connect this new land with the old harbor a deep channel (‘Yangtze Harbor’) will be dredged to a depth of 20 meters below sealevel. Previous work revealed a deltaic landscape with Late Paleolithic and Early Mesolithic archeological artifacts at depths of 17–20 meters. Prior to the dredging the archeological potential of the site had to be investigated. In order to obtain a scientific and economical justifiable approach, fitting within the limited time frame, all concerned parties worked in close collaboration: • Harbor authorities (PoR) • Cultural Heritage Agency/Authority (RCE) • The engineering company (PUMA) • Geological and archaeological research institutions Deltares, BOOR and ADC Based upon existing data the involved parties determined that the marine sediments to a depth of 17 meters could be dug out without destroying any relevant archeology. After this a detailed 3D paleolandscape reconstruction for the site was constructed based upon: borings, cpt's and geophysical data. The latter consisted of single and multichannel seismics and multibeam data. With this model the involved parties determined the areas with the highest potential. These selected sites have been studied in more detail using the same techniques, resulting in a new updated 3D model. This model could not have been created without the use of additional seismic data. The use of geophysical data drastically limited the need for large amounts of borings. Based upon the new 3D model an underwater excavation was planned and executed using an accurate dredging crane. Each sample excavated by this crane was analyzed. The first results show artifacts at the predicted depth range. This data will be used the fill the 3d model with archeological information and place the artifacts in the correct (plaeolandscape) context, increasing the scientific value. Because all involved parties worked together the archeological investigations could be integrated with the dredging which made this project to a success for all parties.
