Dynamic light scattering method or laser correlation spectroscopy was applied to evaluation of the size of viruses. We measured correlation functions of the light scattered by human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) and hepatitis A viruses (HAV) and found that size of HIV-1 (subtype A and B) and HAV virions were 104 nm and 28 nm, respectively. Comparison of these findings with electron microscopy data for fixed samples of the same viruses showed good agreement of the results.
The possibility of replication of hepatitis C virus in mice and cultured mouse neurocytes was demonstrated. The elaborated models simplify investigation of this infection.
Influenza A virus genetic sequences revealed by dot hybridization were detected in peripheral blood cells, serum and liquor of three children with congenital pathology of the CNS. The children were born to mothers who contacted influenza during pregnancy. The virus-specific sequences were found for a long period of time (83 days in one case). The serum of the child did not contain antibodies against M protein suggesting that viral nucleocapsids but not the virus particles persist in the organism of the sick child.
