I graduated in Biochemistry at the University of Salamanca in 1999. The same year I joined the laboratory of Dr Raquel E. Rodriguez and Dr Rogelio Gonzalez Sarmiento in University of Salamanca where I began my PhD. In 2002, I submitted my doctorate thesis entitled “Clonation and characterization of a new opioid receptor, ZFOR4, in zebra fish” scoring summa cum laudem. My work during my PhD resulted in the publication of the article “Characterization of a new duplicate delta-opioid receptor from zebra fish” in the Journal of Molecular Endocrinology in 2006.
From 2003 to 2004 I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratory of Dr Angel de Blas in the University of Connecticut. There, I participated in several projects studying the trafficking and clustering of the ionotropic GABAa receptors at the presynaptic terminals. My work contributed to the publication of four research articles entitled: “A four PDZ domain-containing splice variant form of GRIP1 is localized in GABAergic and glutamatergic synapses in the brain”, published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 2004. “Identification and characterization of two novel splice forms of GRIP1 in the rat brain” published in the Journal of Neurochemistry in 2006. “Molecular and functional interaction between Protocadherin γ-C5 and GABAA receptors” in The Journal of Neuroscience in 2012. And “Ring Finger Protein 34 (RNF34) Interacts with and Promotes gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Type-A Receptor Degradation via Ubiquitination of the gamma 2 Subunit.” published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry in 2014
From 2004 to 2011, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Dr Franck Pichaud laboratory at the Laboratory for Molecular Cell Biology in London. During this second postdoc I was been involved in several projects to elucidate the cellular and molecular principles underlying epithelial and neuronal cell polarity and morphogenesis, during development. To address these questions we use Drosophila melanogaster developing eye as a model system. My work contributed to the publication of three research articles entitled: “Regulated and polarized PtdIns (3,4,5)P3 accumulation is essential for apical membrane morphogenesis in photoreceptor epithelial cells” published in Current Biology in 2006. This paper was retained by the Faculty of the 1000, for its very significant impact for the field of epithelial cell polarity and morphogenesis. “Dynamin/Rab5-dependent endocytosis is required to prevent Drosophila photoreceptor degeneration” published in The Journal of Cell Science in 2011. “Atonal and EGFR signalling orchestrate rok- and Drak-dependent adherens junction remodelling during ommatidia morphogenesis” published in Development in 2012. And “rap1, canoe and mbt cooperate with bazooka to promote Zonula adherens assembly in the fly photoreceptor” published in the Journal of Cell Science in 2018.
In 2012 I join Prof. Gines Morata laboratory at the CBMSO where I currently work as a postdoctoral researcher. My research is focus in the study of the JNK pathway in tumor formation and progression also using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. To this day my work in the laboratory has contributed to two recent publications “Distinct regenerative potential of trunk and appendages of Drosophila mediated by JNK signalling” published in Development in 2017, and “Short-term activation of the Jun N-terminal Kinase pathway in apoptosis-deficient cells of Drosophila induces tumorigenesis” published in Nature Communications in 2018.
