The primary focus of Jia Lin Xie’s research is on how the fit/misfit between work design and individual characteristics affects job holder’s well-being. Her work on employee stress and well-being is unique in that she has not only established new theories and tested them cross-culturally, but also has gone beyond the focus on the psychological consequences of stress (the most studied consequences). She is a leader in helping the field to recognize and understand the physiological and immunological consequences of stress, such as Immunoglobulin A (IgA), Immunoglobulin G (IgG), stress-related hormone cortisol and blood pressure. Her research demonstrates that these non-self-reported indicators of well-being not only form an extremely important domain of stress consequences, but also offer a valid vehicle for cross-cultural comparative research on employee well-being.
