Silva Marcelo Sousa

Marcelo Sousa Silva obtained his PhD in Biotechnology (IST-UTL-Portugal, 2006), MSc in Biotechnology (USP-Brazil, 2001) and Graduation in Pharmaceutical Sciences (UFRN-Brazil, 1999). He became a research fellowship in the laboratories of Prof. Isaias Raw and Prof. Denise Tambourgi at the Instituto Butantan (http://www.butantan.gov.br) and at the University of São Paulo (http://www5.usp.br), supported by the Brazilian Academy of Science (1997-1998). He developed his Post-doctoral at the Centro de Biologia Molecular Severo Ochoa – Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain, 2007) and at the Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical – Universidade Nova de Lisboa (IHMT-UNL-Portugal, from 2007 to 2012). Currently, he is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Clinical and Toxicological Analysis at the Health Sciences Centre of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Natal-Brazil. In addition, he develops his research activities as an Invited Researcher at the Global Health and Tropical Medicine of the Instituto de Higiene Medicina Tropical (GHTM-IHMT), Lisbon-Portugal. As Professor at UFRN-Brazil, Marcelo Silva is currently Coordinator of the Laboratory of Immunoparasitology, Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Full Member of the Graduate Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Full Member of the Editorial Committee and he was a Full Member of the institution's Animal Ethics Committee (2017-2020). He authored more than 30 international peer-reviewed papers and 04 book chapters. His main indicators as scientific independence are presented in the form of (i) capacity to obtain funding as principal investigator in competitive calls, (ii) publications as corresponding author, (iii) development of international and national networks, and (iv) supervision of MSc and PhD students. Regarding to approved grants and research projects, he has one grant obtained from the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7 – European Commission), projects supported by FCT, bilateral cooperation research project supported by FCT-Portugal and Capes-Brazil, multilateral programmes and scientific network consortium supported by CYTED and Spanish government. His main lines of research are related to the development of drugs, vaccines and diagnostic tests in the context of tropical diseases, namely Chagas disease, African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis and malaria.
