1Spurious Rewards: Rethinking Training Signals in RLVR
    Rulin Shao,Shuyue Stella Li,Rui Xin,Scott Geng,Yiping Wang,Sewoong Oh,Simon Shaolei Du,Nathan Lambert,Sewon Min,Ranjay Krishna,Yulia Tsvetkov,Hannaneh Hajishirzi,

We show that reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) can elicit strong mathematical reasoning in certain models even with spurious rewards that have little, no, or even negative correlation with the correct answer. For example, RLVR improves MATH-500 performance for Qwen2.5-Math-7B in absolute points by 21.4% (random reward), 13.8% (format reward), 24.1% (incorrect label), 26.0% (1-shot RL), and 27.1% (majority voting) -- nearly matching the 29.1% gained with ground truth rewards. However, the spurious rewards that work for Qwen often fail to yield gains with other model families like Llama3 or OLMo2. In particular, we find code reasoning -- thinking in code without actual code execution -- to be a distinctive Qwen2.5-Math behavior that becomes significantly more frequent after RLVR, from 65% to over 90%, even with spurious rewards. Overall, we hypothesize that, given the lack of useful reward signal, RLVR must somehow be surfacing useful reasoning representations learned during pretraining, although the exact mechanism remains a topic for future work. We suggest that future RLVR research should possibly be validated on diverse models rather than a single de facto choice, as we show that it is easy to get significant performance gains on Qwen models even with completely spurious reward signals.

2OpenAgentSafety: A Comprehensive Framework for Evaluating Real-World AI Agent Safety
    Sanidhya Vijayvargiya, Aditya Bharat Soni,Xuhui Zhou,Zora Zhiruo Wang,Nouha Dziri,Graham Neubig,Maarten Sap

Recent advances in LLM agents capable of solving complex, everyday tasks, ranging from software engineering to customer service, have enabled deployment in real-world scenarios, but their possibilities for unsafe behavior demands rigorous evaluation. While prior benchmarks have attempted to evaluate safety of LLM agents, most fall short by relying on simulated environments, narrow task domains, or unrealistic tool abstractions. We introduce OpenAgentSafety, a comprehensive and modular framework for evaluating agent behavior across eight critical risk categories. Unlike prior work, our framework evaluates agents that interact with real tools, including web browser, code execution environment, file system, bash terminal, and messaging platform; and supports over 350 multi-turn, multi-user tasks spanning both benign and adversarial user intents. OpenAgentSafety is designed for extensibility, allowing researchers to add tools, tasks, web environments, and adversarial strategies with minimal effort. It combines rule-based evaluation with LLM-as-judge assessments to detect both overt and subtle unsafe behaviors. Empirical analysis of seven prominent LLMs in agentic scenarios reveals unsafe behavior in 49% of safety-vulnerable tasks with Claude Sonnet 4, to 73% with o3-mini, highlighting critical risks and the need for stronger safeguards before real-world deployment of LLM agents.

3Imagining and Building Wise Machines: the Centrality of AI Metacognition
    Samuel G B Johnson,Amir-Hossein Karimi,Yoshua Bengio,Nick Chater,Tobias Gerstenberg,Kate Larson,Sydney Levine,Melanie Mitchell,Iyad Rahwan,Bernhard Schölkopf,Igor Grossmann

Although artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly smart, its wisdom has not kept pace. In this opinion article, we examine what is known about human wisdom and sketch a vision of its AI counterpart. We introduce human wisdom as strategies for solving intractable problems-those outside the scope of analytic techniques-including both 'object-level' strategies, such as heuristics (for managing problems), and 'metacognitive' strategies, such as intellectual humility, perspective-taking, or context adaptability (for managing object-level task fit). We argue that AI systems particularly struggle with this type of metacognition. Wise metacognition would lead to AI that is more robust to novel environments, explainable to users, cooperative with others, and safer by risking fewer misaligned goals with human users. We discuss how wise AI might be benchmarked, trained, and implemented.

4VLS: Steering Pretrained Robot Policies Via Vision-Language Models
Shuo Liu, Ishneet Sukhvinder Singh,Yiqing Xu,Jiafei Duan,Ranjay Krishna

Why do pretrained diffusion or flow-matching policies fail when the same task is performed near an obstacle, on a shifted support surface, or amid mild clutter? Such failures rarely reflect missing motor skills; instead, they expose a limitation of imitation learning under train-test shifts, where action generation is tightly coupled to training-specific spatial configurations and task specifications. Retraining or fine-tuning to address these failures is costly and conceptually misaligned, as the required behaviors already exist but cannot be selectively adapted at test time. We propose Vision-Language Steering (VLS), a training-free framework for inference-time adaptation of frozen generative robot policies. VLS treats adaptation as an inference-time control problem, steering the sampling process of a pretrained diffusion or flow-matching policy in response to out-of-distribution observation-language inputs without modifying policy parameters. By leveraging vision-language models to synthesize trajectory-differentiable reward functions, VLS guides denoising toward action trajectories that satisfy test-time spatial and task requirements. Across simulation and real-world evaluations, VLS consistently outperforms prior steering methods, achieving a 31

5A False Sense of Privacy: Evaluating Textual Data Sanitization Beyond Surface-level Privacy Leakage
    Rui Xin,Niloofar Mireshghallah,Shuyue Stella Li, Michael Duan,Hyunwoo Kim,Yejin Choi,Yulia Tsvetkov,Sewoong Oh,Pang Wei Koh

Sanitizing sensitive text data typically involves removing personally identifiable information (PII) or generating synthetic data under the assumption that these methods adequately protect privacy; however, their effectiveness is often only assessed by measuring the leakage of explicit identifiers but ignoring nuanced textual markers that can lead to re-identification. We challenge the above illusion of privacy by proposing a new framework that evaluates re-identification attacks to quantify individual privacy risks upon data release. Our approach shows that seemingly innocuous auxiliary information – such as routine social activities – can be used to infer sensitive attributes like age or substance use history from sanitized data. For instance, we demonstrate that Azure's commercial PII removal tool fails to protect 74% of information in the MedQA dataset. Although differential privacy mitigates these risks to some extent, it significantly reduces the utility of the sanitized text for downstream tasks. Our findings indicate that current sanitization techniques offer a false sense of privacy, highlighting the need for more robust methods that protect against semantic-level information leakage.
