The Biblioteca Nacional de España (National Library of Spain) is a major public library, the largest in Spain, and one of the largest in the world. It is located in Madrid, on the Paseo de Recoletos.
This paper outlines the methodology and achievements of one of the most renowned researchers in cancionero studies based on three main areas in which her contributions have been essential: the analysis, recovery and interpretation of the scarcity of the medieval female lyrical voice; the musical dimension of 15th-century songbook poetry not accompanied by strict notation; and the eclectic reflection of a model of anthologies in which textual transmission is much more complex than in other literary genres. Not only are the lines and methods of study established by Jane Whetnall analysed, but her work in this regard is also catalogued here, making this article an essential reference point for anyone wishing to delve into the study of any of these lines of work in cancionero poetry.
The PastReader 2025 task, within the framework of IberLEF 2025, focuses on the automatic transcription of digitized Spanish historical press. It uses as a basis the Digital Newspaper Library of the National Library of Spain, a collection that is part of the Hispanic Digital Library project and that gathers millions of pages of newspapers and magazines representative of the thematic and stylistic diversity of the Hispanic press. Although the documents are available in PDF with OCR, the quality of the extracted texts is often poor due to deteriorated scans, irregular page structures, old spelling, and other visual problems. To further automate this process, the task proposes two challenges: the correction of OCR errors and the generation of curated texts from scanned images, applying multimodal models. The main objective is to reduce the need for human intervention in mass digitization processes, promoting systems capable of improving the accessibility, recovery, and preservation of Spanish newspaper heritage through robust and efficient technological solutions.
The aim of this work is twofold: to show the different stages in the process of transforming the documentary legacy of the writer from Valladolid into a public archive and to show the phases of the project to disseminate the archive and its documents. Once the archive has been organised and its individual and composite documents have been described and digitised, applying archival methodology and using new technologies, such as ICA-AtoM, the free archival description software sponsored by the International Council on Archives, the result has been the transformation of the inaccessible documentary legacy of the writer from Valladolid into an archive that is now accessible through the Miguel Delibes Foundation's website. This allows us to conclude that fragments of Miguel Delibes' biography and parts of his creative work contained in the documents in his archive are now accessible thanks to archival work and the use of new technologies for their dissemination.
