IntroductionThis study examines whether circular economy performance is associated with lower urban environmental pressure in Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, and Montería.MethodsUsing an open-data city-year panel for 2019-2024, the analysis constructs indicators of recovery, final disposal, circularity, and environmental pressure. The circularity index combines normalized recovery rate, year-on-year recovery growth, and reverse-coded final-disposal intensity. Robust-outlier and per-capita plausibility checks precede correlation analysis, fixed-effects panel models, and permutation and temporal-placebo tests.ResultsHigher circularity is consistently associated with lower final-disposal pressure. The negative relationship remains after city and year effects and control variables are introduced, while permutation and placebo checks support the temporal and statistical coherence of the result.DiscussionThe findings suggest that municipal circular economy performance should be assessed not only through increased recovery activity but through its capacity to reduce residual disposal pressure. Because the panel is small and observational, the results should be interpreted as robust associations rather than causal effects.
This article focuses on analyzing the family dimension of young ex-combatants in Colombia, with the purpose of unveiling their relationships and bonds. The interpretation is framed from the voice of those who implement public policy (Agency for Reincorporation and Normalization professionals). The research followed a qualitative method with an exploratory-descriptive approach, and highlights the logic of systemic, complex, and social constructionist paradigms. The results indicate that young ex-combatants prefer not to return to their places of origin for security reasons and due to fragmented family relationships, facing significant challenges in establishing solid emotional bonds. As conclusions, some families facilitate the association of young people with armed groups, and thus their life stories may motivate this decision. However, welcoming families facilitate the reestablishment of bonds, provide security, and encourage a successful life project away from illegal armed groups.
This article examines whether household digital access and municipal financial infrastructure are associated with readiness for algorithmic finance among secondary students in Barranquilla and Cartagena, Colombia. Using the Excel dataset provided for this study, the analysis integrates 1600 student-level observations from 2021 to 2024 with measures of digital access, school sector, socioeconomic status, parental education, financial access density and municipal financial inclusion. Two data-verification procedures and three hypothesis tests are applied. The findings show that household digital access, socioeconomic stratum, parental education and private-school attendance are consistently associated with higher readiness, while municipal financial density alone is not sufficient to reduce inequality.
Mangroves are ecosystems that link freshwater, land, and oceans. They are also home to vast biodiversity of species and provide vital resources to many coastal communities worldwide. However, in various parts of the world, these natural ecosystems have been subjected to anthropogenic actions that compromise their subsistence. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse seasonal changes in vegetation cover in the La Caimanera marsh (Colombia) using remote sensing and satellite sensor imagery. Methodologically, machine learning techniques were used, including semi-supervised and supervised learning, using Landsat, Copernicus, and Planet images. The influence of mangrove vegetation cover on pollutants was explored using remote sensing data and in-situ measurements. The results obtained indicated that in 2015 and 2024, the ecosystem showed stability, with slight reductions in mangrove cover and water bodies. In contrast, a slight increase in urbanized areas was also evident. The NDWI, MNDWI, OC3, and QAA spectral indices were used to monitor water dynamics and water quality. The results reflected stability in water conditions between 2010 and 2020, with a slight reduction in 2023. The increase in chlorophyll-a and reduction in turbidity in 2023 showed alterations in water quality. In addition, the predominance of mature mangrove trees, which comprised 83% of the vegetation, is noteworthy, reflecting a healthy and stable ecosystem. The greater density and homogeneity of the mangrove canopy observed in this study suggests a positive ecosystem response and greater resilience to past environmental changes. It is concluded that the changes experienced by the La Caimanera marsh reflect a balance between conservation and development, highlighting the effectiveness of territorial management policies implemented to maintain the ecosystem’s resilience in the face of human pressures.
