BACKGROUND:Black flesh (BF) is an internal disorder in mango, characterized by the development of dark brown to black pigmentation in the inner mesocarp tissue during storage or transport. This study investigated the effects of harvest maturity, low storage or low transport temperatures, and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on mango fruit susceptibility to BF. In the first experiment, 'Tommy Atkins', 'Kent', and 'Palmer' mangoes were harvested at two maturity stages and BF incidence was assessed after 30 days' storage at 8, 10, or 12.5 °C plus 7 days of shelf life at 20 °C. In the second experiment, 'Tommy Atkins' and 'Keitt' mangoes were also treated at harvest with the ethylene action inhibitor 1-MCP (0-800 nL L-1) and stored at 9 °C for 45 days, followed by 7 days of shelf life at 20 °C. The most effective 1-MCP treatment concentration (200 nL L-1) was then validated on mangoes for reduction of BF incidence and severity. RESULTS:The incidence of BF increased with early harvest and lower storage temperatures (≤10 °C), but it was not observed at 12.5 °C. 1-Methylcyclopropene at 200 nL L-1 markedly reduced the incidence and severity of BF, while suppressing respiration and ethylene production. This concentration also maintained flesh firmness and antioxidant capacity, performing in a similar way to higher concentrations. CONCLUSION:Early harvest and low storage temperature increased the incidence of BF whereas 1-MCP treatment reduced it. © 2026 The Author(s).
Automation and environmental control offer solutions to enhance animal welfare and production efficiency in regions with adverse climates. This study aimed to develop a prototype for thermal environment control in finishing swine pens located in a semi-arid region and to evaluate its performance based on microclimatic traits, physiological responses, animal performance, and thermographic aspects of both the facility and the animals. The experiment involved thirty finishing gilts (Duroc × Large White crossbreeds), grouped by age and weight into three treatments (each with 10 animals per experimental unit). The automated thermal control treatments applied were: (1) no thermal control, (2) automatic activation of a micro-sprinkling system, and (3) automatic activation of micro-sprinkling combined with ventilation. Environmental conditions in all treatments failed to reach optimal thermal comfort levels for finishing pigs, due to the semi-arid characteristics of the region. However, the thermal control treatments reduced floor temperatures by approximately 3 °C compared to the treatment without thermal control. The micro-sprinkling treatment reduced the respiratory rate by 5.32 breaths/min and promoted an average daily weight gain of 0.26 kg/day compared to the control group. Additionally, the pigs’ body temperatures were significantly lower than those in the untreated group, indicating improved animal welfare. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of automated thermal control systems as a strategy to enhance swine production in semi-arid regions.
The phytochemical investigation of the flowers of Aspidosperma pyrifolium, an endemic species of the Caatinga biome popularly known as "pereiro" and visited by bees, led to the identification of 43 compounds, comprising fatty acid esters, polyunsaturated alcohols, alkaloids, steroids, terpenes, phenolic acid derivatives, iridoids, and flavonoids. Except for the alkaloids, all other compounds are reported for the first time in the flowers of A. pyrifolium.
Background/Objectives: Well-child care plays a critical role in promoting child health and monitoring growth and development within Primary Health Care (PHC), in line with international frameworks such as the WHO Global Strategy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the absence of standardized quality indicators limits comparability across studies and hinders continuous improvement worldwide. This study aimed to map and analyze the indicators used to assess the quality of well-child care in global PHC settings. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA-ScR and Joanna Briggs Institute methodological guidance, with a pre-registered protocol. Comprehensive searches were performed in May 2025 across fourteen databases and two gray literature sources, without language or time restrictions. Eligible studies assessed quality indicators for well-child care among children up to 5 years, 11 months, and 29 days. Two independent reviewers performed study selection and data extraction. Results: From 6052 records, 62 studies met inclusion criteria. Out of them, most (68%) used composite indicators, primarily from pre-existing tools (67%). While structural and clinical indicators-such as immunization and service accessibility-were predominant, there was a critical absence of relational indicators focusing on patient-provider interaction. This lack of standardization and neglect of the relational dimension significantly hinders international comparability and the assessment of family-centered care quality. Conclusions: Developing and validating a core set of standardized, comprehensive, and context-sensitive indicators integrating structural, clinical, and relational dimensions is essential. These should be linked to information systems to enable robust national and international comparison, strengthen evidence-based management, and drive continuous quality improvement to achieve the 2030 Agenda goals. These findings provide a foundation for policymakers to develop standardized monitoring tools that prioritize neglected relational aspects of care.
