This study analyzes the paradox of decentralization and cultural centralization in contemporary Indonesian popular music through the case of dangdut koplo. Although post-2014 regional autonomy and digital technologies have expanded access to music production across Indonesia, this research shows the consolidation of a standardized Javanese koplo format as a dominant national template. Using multi-sited ethnography (2021–2023) in East Java, Makassar, Ambon, and East Kalimantan, combined with digital analysis of TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, the study traces how rhythmic codification, platform circulation, and modular adaptation enable koplo to function as a musical lingua franca. Findings demonstrate that decentralized production infrastructures coexist with aesthetic convergence: standardized kendang patterns, visual framing, and mixing practices are widely reproduced, while regional melodic and vocal elements are layered onto a stable rhythmic structure. Drawing on Raymond Williams’ concept of cultural centrality, Homi K. Bhabha’s hybridity, and media ecology theory, this study proposes the concept of “standardized differentiation” to explain how structural uniformity coexists with patterned local variation. The research argues that digital and administrative decentralization reconfigure, rather than dissolve, cultural hierarchy in Indonesia’s contemporary music landscape.
Indonesian development research on animated video for character education routinely reports effectiveness for both cognitive and affective outcomes. Most such conclusions, however, rest on one-group pretest-posttest designs and self-report instruments vulnerable to testing, ceiling, and social desirability effects. The present study used the prevailing template deliberately, to examine the gap between what it can detect and what it claims. An animated video on rights, obligations, and responsibility, built with the Alessi and Trollip model, was tested with seventeen fifth-grade students at a public elementary school in Kepanjen, Malang. The cognitive test produced a normalised gain of 0.37, classified as medium but constrained by an already high pretest baseline. The responsibility self-report shifted by only two percentage points, well within measurement noise, with both measurements compressed against the very high category. This asymmetry between a moderate cognitive gain and a negligible affective shift is not idiosyncratic; it is what short multimedia interventions tend to produce when affective outcomes are read as dispositional traits rather than process variables. Animated video supported knowing but, within this study, produced no comparable movement in becoming. The product itself passed expert validation in the feasible to very feasible range. The asymmetry is better read as a property of the prevailing evaluation template than of the product alone, and concerns what a one-group, self-report design can detect, independent of sample size. For researchers and curriculum developers, affective effectiveness should not be inferred from short single-session designs; designs, instruments, and durations must match the dispositional nature of character.
The Cultural Journalism Training Program equips young writers with the skills to document cultural events, supporting cultural advancement. Initiated through the 2024 Cultural Facilitation Grant, with Balai Pelestarian Kebudayaan Wilayah IX (Bandung) as the facilitator, the program emphasizes the importance of cultural documentation alongside cultural asset utilization. Currently, few media outlets focus on recording cultural events due to challenges in consistency, audience segmentation, and regeneration. This program fosters multi-stakeholder collaboration, with Yayasan Musik Bandung as the technical organizer and the Music Department of Universitas Pasundan leading implementation. The Humanitas Program at Universitas Katolik Parahyangan serves as a strategic partner. Participants hail from Universitas Katolik Parahyangan, Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, Institut Teknologi Bandung, and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Thirteen trainees produced journalistic works published on semestabudaya.id, a platform for young writers to engage with cultural content. By encouraging documentation and publication, the program enhances young writers' interest and participation in cultural journalism, particularly within the Bandung metropolitan area. It contributes to preserving and promoting cultural narratives while strengthening public engagement with local heritage. Journalism can functions as prominent tool for cultural reproduction. The primary challenge encountered lies in sustaining continuity in the production of culture-themed writing. To address this issue, similar initiatives are advised to establish long-term mentoring mechanisms that support the consistency and development of writers beyond the training period.
This study explores the intricate coexistence of European colonial and early modern architecture with traditional architectural styles within Indonesia’s urban landscapes. This dynamic interplay reflects not only the enduring influence of colonial buildings but also the emergence of modernist structures in the mid-twentieth century, along with the resilience and adaptability of local traditions. The research emphasizes the importance of this coexistence as a vital aspect in the preservation of cultural heritage and national identity, particularly in the context of rapid globalization and urbanization. Employing a qualitative approach that combines systematic field observations in Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, and Yogyakarta with digital archive analysis, this study provides detailed empirical evidence of how traditional elements have been integrated. The findings reveal that this architectural hybridization fosters innovation and sustainability, contributing to the enrichment of Indonesia’s urban identity, while addressing contemporary societal needs. The study advocates for policies that promote the harmonious integration of traditional and modern elements in urban development, ensuring that architecture remains both contextually relevant and culturally meaningful. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how architectural practices can support cultural preservation and identity in a globalizing world.
