Recent research has emphasized the potential of combining different electrode materials to enhance the performance of asymmetric supercapacitors for energy storage applications. In this study, an asymmetric supercapacitor was developed using cobalt sulfide (CoS)-embedded activated carbon (AC), denoted as CoS@AC, as the positive electrode, while AC alone served as the negative electrode. Initially, micro-flower morphology of CoS was synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and layered morphology of AC was prepared through the carbonization of Acorus calamus. Then CoS@AC nanocomposite was fabricated using a wet impregnation method and its structural, morphological analysis was carried out. The morphological analysis of CoS@AC nanocomposites confirmed the presence of both micro-flower morphology of CoS and layered morphology of AC structures. The TEM analysis of CoS@AC nanocomposite revealed the presence of both micro-flower-like (CoS) and layered-like structure (AC), and the HRTEM analysis showed an interplanar spacing of 0.236 nm related to CoS (101) XRD diffraction. The BET analysis of CoS@AC nanocomposites shows a nearly type-I isotherm with a surface area of about 1145 m2/g, an average pore size of about 4.23 nm, and a pore volume of 0.451 cc/g. Finally, the CoS@AC‖AC electrode demonstrated enhanced electrochemical performance, achieving a specific capacitance of approximately 234 F/g, an energy density of 83.2 Wh/kg, and a power density of 16,089 W/kg. Further, the stability analysis was carried out for 2000 cycles, which showed better stability performance. These results strongly recommend that the CoS@AC‖AC system is favorable for asymmetric supercapacitor applications.
Octopus mimus aquaculture has gained relevance owing to its commercial potential; however, optimization of its reproductive and growth conditions in captivity requires further study. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reproductive conditioning, morphometric growth, and water quality of this species in a controlled system. To do this, adult O. mimus were selected and kept in circular tanks with controlled temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and salinity. Weight, total length (TL), mantle length (ML), and arm length (AL) measurements were made, in addition to monitoring seawater quality throughout the conditioning cycle. Paralarvae hatching productions were recorded, and Fulton's condition index (k) was calculated to assess octopus health. The results showed that larger females produced more paralarvae, and that temperature significantly influenced the incubation period. The morphometric relationships between TL, ML, and LA were highly correlated, particularly in females. The seawater quality, with temperatures close to 22 °C, dissolved oxygen between 7.8 and 9.2 mg/L, 7.1-8.0 pH, and salinity around 35.3 PSU, was optimal for the welfare and reproduction of octopuses. This study provides keys to the effective management of O. mimus in aquaculture, with an emphasis on the importance of proper water quality management and the selection of larger broodstock.
Residual lignin generated by pulp, paper, and biorefining industries is commonly burned for energy, despite its potential as a renewable source of aromatic compounds. Studies focusing on microbial lignin degradation contribute to lignin valorization and represent a sustainable strategy to enhance biomass circularity. Here, we report the isolation of Klebsiella sp. IL2_9 from a ruminal consortium and demonstrate its ability to degrade and metabolize organosolv lignin. After 24 h of cultivation, the strain removed 22% of the initial lignin content. FTIR analysis revealed alterations in functional groups associated with guaiacyl and syringyl units, indicating structural modification of the polymer. GC-MS analyses further showed the consumption of lignin-derived aromatics, including vanillin, 2-aminobenzoic acid, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, along with the formation of vanillyl alcohol and phenyllactic acid derivatives. Overall, these findings highlight the potential of Klebsiella sp. IL2_9 as a promising biotechnological candidate for lignin valorization under anaerobic conditions.
This study analyzes the relationship between frequency indices (FI), severity indices (SI), accident rates (AR), hazardous incidents, and fatal accidents in Peruvian mining (2010–2023). It addresses the issue of methodological differences in calculating these indices across sectors and their influence on preventing fatal accidents. Using data from MINEM, a descriptive-explanatory approach was applied, analyzing statistics on fatal accidents and hazardous incidents through descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The results reveal a very weak correlation (0.253) between hazardous incidents and fatal accidents, a moderate positive correlation between FI and fatal accidents (0.507–0.633), and a strong correlation (0.808) between SI and fatal accidents, highlighting that severity has a more direct impact on fatalities. Finally, AR shows a moderate positive correlation (0.672) with fatal accidents. It concludes that safety indicators are related to the number of fatal accidents; however, preventing fatal accidents requires comprehensive strategies focused on reducing the frequency and severity of accidents, beyond merely monitoring indices.
