In this study we present a novel fully automated Hippocampal Unified Multi-Atlas-Networks (HUMAN) algorithm for the segmentation of the hippocampus in structural magnetic resonance imaging. In multi-atlas approaches atlas selection is of crucial importance for the accuracy of the segmentation. Here we present an optimized method based on the definition of a small peri-hippocampal region to target the atlas learning with linear and non-linear embedded manifolds. All atlases were co-registered to a data driven template resulting in a computationally efficient method that requires only one test registration. The optimal atlases identified were used to train dedicated artificial neural networks whose labels were then propagated and fused to obtain the final segmentation. To quantify data heterogeneity and protocol inherent effects, HUMAN was tested on two independent data sets provided by the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative and the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies. HUMAN is accurate and achieves state-of-the-art performance (Dice[Formula: see text] and Dice[Formula: see text]). It is also a robust method that remains stable when applied to the whole hippocampus or to sub-regions (patches). HUMAN also compares favorably with a basic multi-atlas approach and a benchmark segmentation tool such as FreeSurfer.
Poor performance has pervaded the last forty years of software development, evident across industry sectors, project size, budget, geographic location, system quality and functionality, and exacerbated by increased criticality of IT in organizational mission and strategy. A significant body of research has investigated the potential of emerging development methodologies to address these shortcomings but the effectiveness of these methods is largely supported by anecdotal evidence. At the same time, metrics and measurement are known to affect ISD performance but the existing literature on ISD metrics is misaligned with practitioners’ needs, leading to a lack of clarity about ISD metrics in practice. This paper presents an interdisciplinary literature review on ISD metrics to identify the underlying reasons for this misalignment and evaluate the extent to which existing literature can be used to better understand the impact of emerging software development methodologies on ISD performance.

The updated Library and Information Knowledge Curriculum (the LIK Curriculum) was introduced in Slovenia in the school year 2008/09. For the process of educational transformation, besides the principles and theoretical platforms, the continuous and simultaneous monitoring and the evaluation of pedagogical process implementation are of great importance. For this reason, the pilot evaluation, consisting of two methodological perspectives was led. The first research was conducted on the basis of data gathering from respondents to questionnaires. The second research was based upon the LIK cross-curricular learning lesson observations, applying the structured observation scheme. The purpose of the study is to empirically verify whether the implementation of the cross-curricular learning lessons is in compliance with the set of goals of the updated LIK curriculum. Ten gymnasiums participated in the research, five of them anticipated in the restruction of the curriculum and five of them anticipated in the research only. The combination of two research methods enabled the comparison of some results acquired by both studies, as well as the assessment of concordance / discordance of results in individual fields. All the research participants are aware of the significance of monitoring and evaluation of the LIK cross-curricular learning lessons, required for achieving a higher quality of the educational system. We believe that the questionnaires and the observation scheme will become a useful tool for practice, or to be precise, for the supervision of the LIK cross-curricular learning lessons.
