The history of the development and renovation of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette's (ULL) football grounds and stadia from 1901 through 2024 reveals the course ULL took to support its athletic grounds as social anchors. In considering how that path matched or diverted from other higher educational institutions, in the case of ULL, it appears social connections to the university and a shared collective identity between students, alumni, and the regional community were developed through events held at the football stadia. Further, ULL's athletic fields and stadiums developed into social anchors because they were capable of establishing pride and place attachment through fundraising, fan engagement, and social interaction opportunities. Various stakeholder groups and individuals demonstrated strength in the history of ULL's stadia construction, complementing some institutional histories on ULL while offering a unique story about how football and its playing venues served as a strategic resource to help the ascension of ULL. More specifically, the recognition of ULL football and its stadia as social anchors remains incomplete with respect to the school's institutional history.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remain challenging for quantum mechanical (QM) modeling due to their atypical electronic structures, large number of compounds, and limited experimental data for validation. To address this, we constructed a comprehensive benchmarking database that evaluates the performance of a broad range of QM methods. The database benchmarks thermal properties (BDEs) and electronic properties (dipole moments, electron affinities, ionization potentials), validated against experimental data where available and against high-level theoretical references. All data are released through the open and extensible PFAS_Database on GitHub, which is designed to grow over time, both in number of PFAS and inclusion of newly identified top-performing methods, providing a foundation for more reliable modeling and remediation strategies.
In this paper, we examine an apparent tension between the following three claims: (1) there is an afterlife, for example, in Heaven or Hell, and individuals experience perfect happiness in the former, (2) deceased embryonic children go to Heaven, and (3) that abortion is morally wrong because it harms the fetus. We consider whether abortion harms a fetus given (1) and (2). Our paper assesses this claim-that abortion harms the embryonic child aborted-by applying the most prominent accounts of harm on offer in the literature while presupposing (1) and (2). Our goal is to determine which accounts of harm avoid or fall prey to the apparent tension involved in maintaining (1) and (3).
Although autonomy-relevant parenting practices (solicitation, rule-setting, and psychological control) have been linked to adolescent disclosure, little is known about how these practices operate across cultural contexts. Existing studies often examined these practices in isolation or relied on cross-sectional designs, limiting understanding of their unique relations over time. This study examined these associations longitudinally across eight countries differing in average individualism and collectivism, focusing on the mediating role of adolescents’ perceptions of parental warmth, neglect, and overcontrol. Participants were 1,215 adolescents (50.3% girls) assessed at ages 13, 15, and 16. Perceived psychological control predicted greater perceived neglect and overcontrol, and perceived overcontrol, in turn, significantly predicted lower disclosure; this indirect effect was significant. Neither solicitation nor rule-setting predicted disclosure over time. However, when focusing only on voluntary disclosure (excluding secrecy items), solicitation predicted greater disclosure. Findings highlight the differential impact of parenting practices on disclosure over time, with psychological control as a risk factor and solicitation potentially facilitating disclosure depending on its measurement.
