The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is the U.S. federal executive department responsible for public security, roughly comparable to the interior or home ministries of other countries. Its stated missions involve anti-terrorism, border security, immigration and customs, cyber security, and disaster prevention and management. It began operations in 2003, formed as a result of the Homeland Security Act of 2002, enacted in response to the September 11 attacks. With more than 240,000 employees, DHS is the third-largest Cabinet department, after the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs. Homeland security policy is coordinated at the White House by the Homeland Security Council. Other agencies with significant homeland security responsibilities include the Departments of Health and Human Services, Justice, and Energy.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S.S...S.S.S.S.S.S.S...S.S.S.S.S.S.
Presentation attack detection (PAD) subsystems are an important part of effective and user-friendly remote identity validation (RIV) systems. However, ensuring robust performance across diverse environmental and procedural conditions remains a critical challenge. This paper investigates the impact of low-light conditions and automated image acquisition on the robustness of commercial PAD systems using a scenario test of RIV. Our results show that PAD systems experience a significant decline in performance when utilized in low-light or auto-capture scenarios, with a model-predicted increase in error rates by a factor of about four under low-light conditions and a doubling of those odds under auto-capture workflows. Specifically, only one of the tested systems was robust to these perturbations, maintaining a maximum bona fide presentation classification error rate below 3
Deposit money bank (DMBs) in Nigeria have been grappling with serious challenges, which has resulted in fluctuations in the key performance indicators, especially earnings and profitability, which has been on decline over the years. This necessitates determining the effect of banks; specific and the macroeconomic variables on financial performance of DMBs in Nigeria, from 2003- 2023. The study employed the descriptive statistics and the Hildreth-Lu time series regression technique for the analysis of data. For the bank-specific variables, asset growth, leverage and asset quality were adopted, while interest rate, inflation rate, exchange rate, and economic growth were the macroeconomic variables used. Findings reveal that asset growth and inflation rate have insignificant effect; leverage and exchange rate have a negative but significant effect, while asset quality, interest rate, and economic growth tends to have a significant positive effect on the financial performance, measured by the net interest margin (NIM). This study draws the conclusion that firms’ performance is highly contingent on both the factors specific to banks and the external macroeconomic variables, with the macroeconomic determinants having an edge over the former. Banks should take measures to manage the growth in total assets more economically, effectively, and efficiently, in order to generate additional earnings. Banks can advantage of the prevailing interest rate to generate more earnings through credit creation.
Plus-minus syndrome is a rare neurological disorder marked by asymmetric eyelid dysfunction, typically linked to midbrain lesions. We present a case of a 32-year-old male who developed right-sided partial ptosis and left eyelid retraction following a febrile illness. Apart from these ocular findings, his neurological examination was unremarkable. Extensive investigations, including MRI brain, CE MRI brain, MRA, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, and nerve conduction studies, revealed no abnormalities. Given the recent infection and absence of structural lesions, a post-infectious demyelinating process was suspected. The patient was treated with a brief course of oral steroids, resulting in complete symptom resolution within four days. This case highlights a unique presentation of plus-minus syndrome without radiological evidence of midbrain involvement, suggesting an inflammatory or immune-mediated mechanism. It underscores the importance of considering non-structural causes in similar cases and supports the potential benefit of early corticosteroid therapy.
Understanding the losses in pathogen infectivity that occur in aerosol particles is important to model transmission and inform the development of mitigation strategies. Previous studies have suggested that the losses in infectivity can result from multiple competing processes that may occur at different rates. The aim of the present study was to compare estimates of these losses measured using two different methodologies, specifically a rotating drum chamber and by the controlled electrodynamic levitation and extraction of bioaerosol onto a substrate (CELEBS). Comparisons were made using Escherichia coli (E. coli) across a range of humidity levels and particle sizes. The results demonstrate that both methodologies provide similar estimates of both a rapid loss of E. coli culturability that occurs immediately after particle generation and a slower decay observed in aerosol particles over longer periods of time. Both methodologies also observed that losses were humidity dependent, which is consistent with previous reports. While there are limitations to each measurement system, these results suggest that the two techniques provide complementary approaches for examining factors which may influence the survival of microorganisms in aerosol particles. While additional comparisons with a range of microorganisms across a wider range of environmental conditions and decay rates would be useful, the initial comparisons performed in the present study are important to help identify best practices for future studies and increase confidence in the accuracy and comparability of the generated data using the different approaches.
