Armed conflict, forced displacement, and the construction of a hydroelectric dam are some of the issues that highlight and influence the territorial and educational challenges faced by the Ember & aacute; Katio indigenous people of Alto Sin & uacute; in C & oacute;rdoba, Colombia, affecting their enrollment in schools where the knowledge taught is not necessarily relevant, as it does not bring their culture closer to teaching, as is the case with the limited integration of science and ancestral technology in teaching and learning processes, as well as in the experience and transmission of ancestral knowledge. References such as Morin (1994, 2011) from the epistemology of complexity, Freire (1993) with popular education, and Walsh (2007) from interculturality, support a theoretical and epistemic framework that enables the integration of ancestral knowledge into scientific and technological education. This research adopts a qualitative and documentary methodological approach based on critical hermeneutics, grounded in the review of scientific articles, institutional documents, and national and international educational policies. The results reveal hegemonic and fragmented school curriculum that ignore indigenous cultural and social contexts and limit the development of skills relevant to their realities. However, contextualized pedagogical, didactic, and curriculum approaches are also identified that articulate cultural and ancestral practices with STEM education, strengthening meaningful learning based on cultural identity. Finally, it is concluded that intercultural education based on the epistemology of complexity promotes curricular justice and peacebuilding in the territories.
Financial education has established itself as an essential competence for citizenship, being critical during the university transition to adulthood. This study aimed to analyze the financial planning and indebtedness profile of Administration students at a community university. Methodologically, a quantitative descriptive approach was adopted, applying a survey to 142 students in Ca & ccedil;ador and Fraiburgo, Santa Catarina, revealing a predominantly young, female, and low-income sample. Hypotheses regarding self-perception of knowledge, resilience, and consumption were tested. Results validated the correlation between low income and immediate economic vulnerability, indicating that almost half of the students have reserves for only thirty days. The "illusion of competence" was identified: despite positive self-perception, uncontrolled credit card use and immediate gratification behavior prevail, refuting the thesis that technical training in management guarantees personal financial health. As contributions alert us to the insufficiency of the theoretical curriculum, demanding practical and behavioral interventions in teaching institutions, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, to promote effective economic sustainability of future professionals.
Objectives Metabolic syndrome (MS) is closely linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), highlighting the importance of recognizing hepatic and metabolic alterations in this population. This study aimed to evaluate the inflammatory and metabolic profiles of individuals with MS and to investigate the associations of the FIB-4, HSI, and TyG indices with hepatic, metabolic, and inflammatory parameters. Methods A total of 67 individuals diagnosed with MS were evaluated at a university outpatient clinic. Participants underwent biochemical, hematological, hormonal, and inflammatory testing. Statistical analyses included Spearman’s correlation, principal component analysis (PCA), and multiple linear regression, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results Results showed that 85.07% of participants presented signs of hepatic steatosis based on the HSI index, despite lacking a clinical diagnosis. PCA and correlation analyses indicated that individuals without steatosis had mild glycemic and lipid alterations, whereas those with steatosis exhibited greater metabolic heterogeneity, with diferences in inflammatory and dyslipidemic profiles. The TyG index was significantly associated with insulin and HOMA-IR, supporting its association with insulin resistance. HSI correlated with AST, ALT, hs-CRP, and total proteins, indicating hepatic and inflammatory involvement. FIB-4, however, showed no significant associations. Conclusion The TyG and HSI indices appear to be useful and accessible tools that may provide complementary information on metabolic, hepatic and inflammatory alterations in individuals with MS, whereas FIB-4 showed no significant associations in this population. These findings may contribute to identifying individuals who could benefit from further clinical assessment and early management of modifiable metabolic risk factors; however, prospective studies are needed to establish the diagnostic and predictive utility of these indices.
Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, is a highly prevalent hepatic condition closely linked to metabolic syndrome (MetS). Epigenetic regulators such as microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical modulators of the molecular pathways underlying MASLD pathogenesis, offering new perspectives for non-invasive diagnosis and targeted therapy. This study aimed to identify and characterize target genes and pathways regulated by two key hepatic miRNAs, namely miR-122 and miR-29a, through a comprehensive in silico bioinformatics approach, to better understand their functional roles in MASLD and MetS. Methods: Target genes of miR-122 and miR-29a were predicted using three databases (TargetScan, DIANA-microT-CDS, and miRWalk), and those identified by at least two databases were selected for downstream analyses. Functional enrichment was performed using Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway analysis. Gene networks and biological process maps were constructed using Metascape, clusterProfiler and Cytoscape. Results: miR-122 was found to negatively regulate genes involved in lipid metabolism, insulin signaling, and inflammatory pathways, including PPARGC1A, PPARA, LPL, TLR4, and HMGCR, contributing to insulin resistance and liver dysfunction. By contrast, miR-29a demonstrated potential hepatoprotective effects by targeting LEP, INSR, IL13, and IL18, enhancing insulin sensitivity and reducing fibrogenic activity. Enrichment analysis revealed strong associations with biological processes, such as STAT phosphorylation, lipid homeostasis, and inflammatory signaling, as well as associations with cellular components, including lipoproteins and plasma membranes. miR-122 and miR-29a exhibit opposing regulatory functions in MASLD pathogenesis. Whereas miR-122 is associated with disease progression, miR-29a acts protectively. These miRNAs may serve as promising biomarkers and therapeutic targets in MASLD and related metabolic conditions. Further validation through experimental and clinical studies is warranted.
