Abstract Background Preeclampsia is a significant cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, often influenced by maternal nutrition. Calcium and zinc are essential micronutrients implicated in the prevention of preeclampsia. This study examines their levels in pregnant women consuming seafood in Ambon City as a local data that could support global data. Methods This analytical observational study used a case-control design. Calcium and zinc levels were assessed in 120 pregnant women (60 with preeclampsia, 60 without preeclampsia) attending medical facilities in Ambon from June to October 2024. Statistical analyses, including Chi-square tests, were performed. A P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Pregnant women with preeclampsia in Ambon City had lower calcium levels than those without preeclampsia, especially among those consuming less than four pieces of sea fish per day (≈ 120 g each) (borderline (OR = 3.143, p = 0.053)). Zinc levels showed no significant difference. Women with preeclampsia had a 10.286-fold increased likelihood of low calcium levels. Conclusion In Ambon City, pregnant women with preeclampsia have lower calcium levels than those without, while zinc levels remain similar between both groups. Higher fish consumption (at least four medium-sized pieces per day) is linked to higher calcium levels in both preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic women, but zinc levels are unaffected by fish intake.
Abstract. Kesaulya H, Hidayat W, Simarmata R, Patty J. 2025. Functional profiling of Syzygium aromaticum-associated bacteria reveals PGPR traits for tropical biofertilizer development. Biodiversitas 26: 6130-6139. Syzygium aromaticum (clove) is a tropical spice of major economic and ecological importance in Indonesia, yet the microbial communities associated with its cultivation remain poorly characterized. Harnessing native Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) offers a sustainable alternative to chemical inputs and supports resilient agroecosystems. This study explored the biofertilizer potential of bacterial strains isolated from S. aromaticum-growing regions in Central Maluku, Indonesia. Rhizospheric and endophytic isolates were characterized using physiological assays and 16S rRNA sequencing to assess key PGPR traits, including auxin production, phosphate solubilization, nitrogen fixation, and enzymatic activities relevant to nutrient cycling and stress tolerance. Eleven isolates were obtained, with greater diversity from the rhizosphere (9 isolates) than from leaves (2 isolates). Screening demonstrated multiple plant-beneficial traits, including indole-3-acetic acid production, phosphate solubilization, and growth in nitrogen-free medium, complemented by hydrolytic enzyme activities and catalase-based stress tolerance. Three isolates showed particularly strong multifunctional profiles: T5RCHM21 (high IAA, phosphate solubilization, nitrogen-fixation trait, broad pH tolerance), T6RCHM3 (highest phosphate solubilization and cellulolytic activity), and T4RCHM3 (very strong catalase with additional enzymatic indices). 16S rRNA analysis grouped isolates mainly within Bacillus, with Brevibacterium, and Klebsiella, supporting phenotype-driven selection and future field validation for practical application.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Weekly iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation has been implemented in Indonesia to reduce the prevalence of anaemia in adolescent girls. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of anaemia and adherence to weekly IFA supplementation and their associated factors among adolescent girls in senior high schools in two high-stunting-prone areas of Ambon City, Indonesia. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN:This cross-sectional study was conducted in August-September 2023, involving 645 adolescent girls enrolled at five senior high schools in two high-stunting-prone areas of Ambon City, namely Poka-Rumah Tiga and Laha Village. The dependent variables were anaemia (i.e., haemoglobin level <12 g/dL) and adherence to weekly IFA supplementation (i.e., consumption of one IFA tablet per week). Factors associated with anaemia and adherence to weekly IFA supplementation were examined using logistic regression. RESULTS:Of 645 ado-lescent girls surveyed, 19.7% had anaemia, and 19.5% consumed weekly IFA tablets. The likelihood of developing anaemia was associated with respondents with a high level of awareness of anaemia (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16-2.57). Adherence to taking weekly IFA tablets increased in those with a high level of awareness of IFA supplementation (aOR = 3.88, 95%CI: 2.46-6.10). CONCLUSIONS:Our study showed that anaemia among adolescent girls represents a moderate to high public health problem, accompanied by low adherence to weekly IFA supplementation among adolescent girls in these areas. Strengthening school-based supplementation, parental engagement, and supply monitoring could enhance programme effectiveness and inform local health policies in Ambon City and other similar settings in Indonesia.
Climate change threatens coral reefs, with a global decline in coral cover driven primarily by rising sea surface temperatures (SST) that cause mass bleaching and mortality. However, long-term trends in hard coral cover on Indonesian reefs, the epicentre of global coral diversity and home to similar to 10% of the world's reef area, remain largely unquantified. Here, we examined the relationship between long-term coral cover trajectories and thermal stress across 394 reef sites in 32 locations throughout Indonesia, using monitoring data collected between 2004 and 2023, with individual sites surveyed for three to sixteen years. We used generalized additive mixed-effect models (GAMMs) to quantify how the extreme thermal events of 2010 and 2016 affected coral cover. Over the past four decades, SSTs have increased by 0.12-0.28 degrees C per decade, with pronounced warming in eastern Indonesia. Despite these increases, long-term coral cover remained stable at the majority of study locations (26 out of 32), potentially due to high thermal tolerance and rapid recovery in some regions. Our analysis also revealed a significant negative relationship between the thermal stress metric Degree Heating Weeks (DHW, degrees C-weeks) and changes in coral cover, with substantial declines observed only beyond a critical threshold of >12 DHW. This study underscores the need for a comprehensive, coordinated national strategy to monitor coral cover and bleaching responses to thermal stress. Given the increasing frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves since 2016, especially in eastern Indonesia, such monitoring is essential to inform targeted strategies that support the resilience of Indonesian coral reefs.
Results / Main Findings / Novelty/Originality of the Research: Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya kesenjangan antara norma hukum dan praktik nyata di lapangan.
