This study examines discourses on the occupation during the Second World War in French and Polish history textbooks. Our objective is to examine how this dark period is named from the perspective of social representations and their modifications from the 1950s to the present. Thus, we will focus on the nouns (occupation and okupacja) and their specifying adjectives (“Hitler”/hitlerowski, “Nazi”/nazistowski, “Allemand” (German)/niemiecki and also Sovietique/sowiecki or radziecki and Italien/włoski) as well as figurative expressions (such as les années noires [“the dark years”]/ /w cieniu swastyki).). The study of naming practices reveals different discursive cultures and thus, the varied and dynamic social representations that were forged in France and Poland. They do not result from differences in referential universes but from two different ways of “narrating” reality.
Memories of historical traumas (war, natural disaster, genocide, dictatorship, etc.) continue to play an important role in discourse and, more broadly, in social relations in several countries. In the context of the problematic memory work carried out in Brazil regarding the civil–military dictatorship and in Austria regarding the Shoah and the Second World War, a resurgence of life writing embedded in literary discourse can be observed in both countries, and among authors originating from them. This contribution presents the results of a contrastive analysis of autobiographical testimonies of this kind. Within the methodological framework of contrastive discourse analysis (von Münchow 2021) and inspired by the thought of Mikhail Bakhtin – particularly through the concept of the chronotope (1978 [1937-38]) – the study seeks to describe discursive representations of authoritarianism, repression, and violence according to three chronotopic dimensions: (1) the external dimension related to the reported events; (2) the external dimension related to the narratives; and (3) the internal dimension. The corpus comprises the narratives Ainda estou aqui (2015) by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, Volto semana que vem (2014) by Maria Pilla, Weiter leben (1992) by Ruth Klüger, and Vienna (2005) by Eva Menasse. The analyses highlight how autobiographical discourse, within each discursive culture, enables the articulation of individual and collective memory, thereby configuring forms of critical resistance to negationism, authoritarianism, and violence.
This article explores how compliments are used in French and Iranian talk shows, based on a contrastive audiovisual corpus. Drawing on a dual tertium comparationis, the talk show genre on the one hand, and the speech act of complimenting on the other, points of convergence were identified between the corpora before the analyses. However, the examination of the data revealed some differences. In French, compliments, which are only weakly ritualized, tend to function as occasional markers of appreciation, often linked to the promotion of cultural works. In Persian, by contrast, compliments are embedded within the framework of ta’ârof, a highly codified politeness ritual, and are frequently offered at the opening of interactions to honor the guest and establish a respectful relational climate. The study also highlights the multimodal dimension of these utterances (verbal, paraverbal, and nonverbal) and their interactional effects on face management, particularly in Persian.
This article examines the representation of learner identities through discourse in a selection of American English and French as a Foreign Language coursebooks published within the past five years. Anchored in contrastive discourse analysis and Halliday’s metafunctional theory, the analysis shows that French coursebooks view the learner as a young person whose identity aligns with that of his/her generation. In contrast, American English coursebooks see the learner as an individual with prior experiences and an emerging identity as an English speaker. A similarity among the coursebooks is the relative absence of representations of identity dimensions, such as sexual orientation. While authentic texts offer opportunities to provide visibility of diverse sexual identities, as cultural artefacts, coursebooks are influenced by their authors' commercial goals. These results indicate that investigating discursive cultures within specific discursive genres requires consideration of the commercial interests that shape their production.
This article analyzes the role of argumentation among the remarqueurs who contributed to the standardization of classical French in the 17th century. Based on the works of Vaugelas, Bouhours and Menage, it shows how these three remarqueurs share the same argumentative aim: establishing a homogeneous language practice and a usage of distinction. A first section presents the argumentative framing underlying their standardization enterprise around the ideology of good usage. A second section highlights the argumentative strategies, whether rational or evaluative, that they mobilize in view of the standardization of French in their time. A third section underlines the correlation between the enunciative positions of these remarqueurs and the argumentative scope of their normative discourse. A final section focuses on the interdiscursive dimension of their works, examining how argumentation on language often leaves room for argumentation on their respective linguistic judgments.
The text examines the relationship between ancient rhetoric and certain key principles of contemporary text linguistics (textual plans, textual sequences). Considering the classical notions of inventio and dispositio from an etiological perspective, we explore the analogies between ancient and modern conceptions of argumentative, narrative, and descriptive structures. The article emphasises that, despite the necessary epistemological differences, classical rhetoric remains an essential source for understanding the foundations of contemporary linguistic theories.
From the perspective of rhetorical theory, knowledge is primarily the result of a communicative dynamic of asserting and contesting claims to validity according to a range of normative criteria. This dynamic unfolds within a heterogeneous plurality of language games. Jean-François Lyotard characterizes this condition as a form of “general agonistics,” drawing on both philosophical and sophistic traditions. Against the backdrop of this general agonistics and Hans Blumenberg’s interpretation of Edmund Husserl’s theory of the lifeworld (Lebenswelt), the concept of doxa is examined and reconstructed as a fundamental rhetorical category for understanding the formation and justification of knowledge. Doxai emerge as plausibility potentials that can be assumed in concrete conflicts and serve as the basis for determining criteria of validity capable of communicatively addressing the conflict at hand. This becomes especially crucial in situations where validity conflicts cannot be resolved by reference to the normative frameworks of a single language game.
