In this editorial we introduce the Special Issue titled “Work and Organizational Psychology in Greece: mapping the terrain and moving forward” reflecting on research in the field in Greece and discussing future paths. Thirty years after the first Work and Organizational Psychology papers were published in the journal Psychology, the field has expanded in scope, methodological sophistication and theoretical grounding. The contributions in this Special Issue reflect both continuity and renewal, discussing key themes that concerned early scholars in Greece, like job burnout and job satisfaction, while also studying new topics like digital transformation, employer branding, psychosocial risks, workplace social capital, and the experiences of older employees in technologically evolving workplaces, highlighting emerging challenges. The studies included have been conducted using diverse methodological approaches, like multilevel modelling, mediation and moderated mediation analyses, network analysis, and qualitative inquiry, demonstrating increasing methodological rigor. Several papers draw on but also extend influential theoretical frameworks, particularly the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) theory, while others focus on Positive Organizational Psychology. More importantly results are interpreted in reference to broader societal events contextualising research. Reviewing our work through critical approaches is discussed and embedded in our vision for more longitudinal, experimental and intervention-based research, closer collaboration between academics and practitioners as well as more active involvement in policy making.
The aim of this study is to explore the role of workplace social capital (WSC), a construct that encompasses trust, reciprocity and organizational network, as an important resource at the organizational-level of analysis that interacts with other resources at the task-level in determining employee job performance. Based on job demands-resources (JD-R) theory, we hypothesized that WSC strengthens the positive relationship between job resources (i.e., job autonomy, colleagues’ social support and performance feedback) and both in-role and extra-role job performance. Five-hundred forty-seven employees nested within 115 organizations participated in the study. Multilevel analyses revealed that extra-role job performance was higher when both task-level resources and WSC were high. The moderating effect of WSC on the link between task-level resources and in-role performance was not supported. These findings highlight the role of WSC as an important organizational resource and contribute to JD-R theory by showing that resources from different levels of analysis reinforce one another in explaining job performance.
In today’s competitive labor market, employer branding and electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) are important elements of a successful recruitment strategy. Drawing on Organizational Justice and Signaling Theory, employer branding involves the strategic communication of an organization’s value proposition, including its attractiveness and prestige. This study has two aims: (i) to test whether the valence of employer reviews (positive vs. negative) shapes perceived organizational prestige and recommendation intentions, and (ii) to assess whether the patterns observed replicate when eWOM refers specifically to the selection method (asynchronous video interviews, AVIs). These attributes significantly influence candidates’ intentions to apply and recommend the organization to potential applicants. Simultaneously, eWOM - especially through anonymous, peer-generated reviews on platforms like Glassdoor - has become a credible source of information that shapes job seekers’ perceptions of potential employers. We present two empirical studies examining the influence of employer reviews on candidates’ perceptions and behavioral intentions. In the first study (Ν = 329), using a within-subjects design, participants viewed a positive and a negative organizational review. Results showed that positive eWOM significantly increased perceived organizational prestige and recommendation intentions (with medium–large effects). These findings support and extend previous findings on the impact of organizational image and employer-related attributes on candidate behavior. The second study (Ν = 240) using a between-subjects design to assess how online reviews of asynchronous video interviews (AVIs) influence recommendation intentions and perceived organizational prestige (effects of comparable magnitude). Participants were exposed to one of two review conditions - positive or negative. Results indicated that review content significantly affected both recommendation intentions and perceptions of organizational prestige. Overall, our research highlights the importance of managing online employer reputation and ensuring a positive candidate experience. Negative eWOM about selection processes can harm organizational attractiveness, while positive reviews strengthen the employer brand and encourage job pursuit.
Recently, there has been an increasing scientific interest in teaching self-efficacy. The three-dimensional model suggested that self-efficacy contains three teaching domains: efficacy for student engagement, efficacy for instructional strategies, and efficacy for classroom management. Teachers’ occupational stress has been associated with lower levels of job satisfaction and self-efficacy. Nevertheless, the directional relationships between the aforementioned constructs remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the mediating and direct effects among job satisfaction, occupational stress, social support and teachers’ self-efficacy. For the aim of this study, a quantitative methodological approach was employed. A total sample of 613 mainstream and special education teachers participated in the study. The Occupational Stress Scale for teachers, the Teacher Job Satisfaction Scale, the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale and the Copenhagen Psychological Questionnaire were administered to the participants. Structural equation modeling analyses suggested statistically significant relationships between job satisfaction and teacher self-efficacy for both mainstream and special education teachers. Moreover, job satisfaction largely was found to mediate the relationship between occupational stress and self-efficacy. The findings of the study add to the growing literature in the field, highlighting the significance of psychological aspects in teachers’ training and suggesting interventions to improve teacher working conditions and quality in education.
This study examines how workplace humor climate relates to employee involvement in creative work within organizational settings, focusing on the mediating role of psychological safety and the moderating role of gender. Drawing on research on workplace climate and creativity, we propose that humor climates shape creative engagement through employees’ perceptions of interpersonal safety, with effects that vary across gendered workplace experiences. Using a moderated mediation analytic approach, two parallel moderated mediation models were tested in a sample of 397 employees in Greece, one examining positive humor climate and one examining negative humor climate as the independent variable. In both models, perceived psychological safety was specified as a mediator and gender as a moderator of the direct relationship between humor climate and creative involvement. Results indicate that positive humor climate is associated with higher levels of psychological safety, which in turn relate to greater involvement in creative work, with gender differentiating the strength of the direct association. In contrast, negative humor climate is associated with lower psychological safety, while also exhibiting a gender-contingent direct relationship with creative involvement. Taken together, the findings point to workplace humor climate as a context-dependent social and psychological factor shaping employee creativity through affective safety and gendered identity dynamics, underscoring the relevance of inclusive humor norms and psychologically safe environments.
This paper examines how digital transformation affects the working life of individuals over 50 years old in Greece. It aims to capture how employees experience the changes brought about from the implementation of technological tools and digital processes in their work, and how these changes affect daily life and relationships inside and outside the workplace. Data was collected via eight focus groups with a total of 37 employees and professionals over 50 years of age, from the private and public sector. Among the most interesting findings was that participants seem to perceive digital transformation as an "inevitable evil" that forces them to reject familiar methods that offered them a sense of safety and competence. The findings underline that the acquisition of digital skills tends to be a matter of individual responsibility, self-training and personal investment of time and money in Greece, without adequate support from the workplace/organization. The slow pace of digitization and digitalization processes, fragmentary implementation of digital services, lack of uniform systems and unsatisfactory ergonomics of digital platforms are causing confusion and create a new kind of 'digital' bureaucracy. Within this context, technophobia and technostress develop out of feelings of insecurity and anxiety due to lack of confidence in digital processes, feelings of fear about the irreversibility of digital mistakes, and frustration from having to implement new processes without human/colleague guidance. Good practices have also emerged from the data which are discussed in the final section of the paper.
According to the health impairment process of job demands-resources (JD-R) theory, job demands deplete employees’ energy, leading to high exhaustion. This, in turn, results in reduced job performance and negative work attitudes (e.g., turnover intentions). In this study, we draw on recent developments in JD-R theory, which emphasize that -next to job and personal resources- other types of resources (e.g., conditions) also help employees cope with job demands thus, buffering their unfavorable consequences. We propose that job tenure can be such a resource. Although job tenure has been recognized as a key human capital resource, empirical evidence on its role is still scarce. Hence, we hypothesize that increases in job demands (i.e., workload, work-home interference, qualitative and quantitative job insecurity) over time relate to higher exhaustion and consequently, to lower job performance and higher turnover intentions, and that job tenure buffers these indirect effects. A total of 195 employees working in Greece participated in both measurement waves across an interval of approximately one year [Time 1 (T1): n = 806; Time 2 (T2): n = 485]. As expected, increases in workload/ work-home interference/ qualitative job insecurity related negatively to job performance at T2 and positively to turnover intentions at T2 via increased exhaustion at T2, but only for employees with lower job tenure. These results contribute to JD-R theory by emphasizing the critical role of job tenure as a resource that helps employees effectively manage job demands and protect themselves from their unfavorable consequences. Findings are also important for organizational practice because they suggest that interventions aimed at optimizing the levels of job demands are particularly relevant for less experienced employees.
This study applied network analysis in pursuance of approaching the complexity of the interactions between the multiple workplace psychosocial risk factors that affect bus drivers in Greece. Workplace psychosocial risk factors are among the major concerns in occupational safety and health and their management remains a serious challenge for organizations. The driving profession has been ranked consistently as highly hazardous while in Greece remains highly unexplored. We combined the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework, with socio-psychological concepts in an attempt to advance the understanding of the combined interconnections of workplace psychosocial factors with various organizational and individual outcomes. A cross-sectional survey was conducted, and the psychosocial factors were assessed using COPSOQ-III self-report questionnaire in a sample of 287 bus drivers. The descriptive results confirmed the streneous nature of driving profession and revealed that the highest psychosocial risk for bus drivers in Greece originated from organizational factors such as Quality of Leadership, Influence and Recognition. Network analysis provided a map that initially confirmed the two main dimensions of JD-R theory while providing new insights into the pathways that connect Demands and Resources factors to burnout and job satisfaction. The addition of the socio-psychological variables of Organizational Identitification and Relative Deprivation into the psychosocial risks network inspired interpretations from multiple perspectives while the overall structure of the network presented a distinct cluster of job-content characteristics. It was concluded that workplace psychosocial risks exhibit systemic and diffuse associations throughout the network, hence encouraging their approach from the perspective of dynamic chain interactions. It was also found that the integration of classical socio-psychological theories within organizational contexts may provide practical benefits and theoretical renewal.
Counselling Psychology is a distinct applied psychological discipline grounded in a holistic and contextual understanding of human experience, emphasizing meaning-making, relational processes, and developmental change across the lifespan. Rooted in humanistic, existential, and contextual traditions, the field attends not only to the alleviation of distress but also to how individuals construct identity, negotiate transitions, and integrate lived experience within social and cultural contexts. This paper introduces a Special Issue that brings together conceptually coherent and methodologically diverse contributions at the intersection of Positive and Counselling Psychology. While Positive Psychology has traditionally emphasized optimal functioning and strengths, the present discussion adopts a Counselling Psychology lens, foregrounding processes of interpretation, narrative continuity, relational embeddedness, and developmental transformation. Across diverse populations, life stages, and psychosocial contexts, the contributions highlight psychological well-being as a dynamic, context-sensitive process shaped through relationships, values, and meaning-making rather than as a static outcome or purely intrapsychic state. This Special Issue illustrates how individuals actively negotiate adversity, vulnerability, and change within their everyday worlds, mobilizing psychological resources while sustaining continuity of the self. By integrating empirical research with lived experience, the collection advances Counselling Psychology as a discipline uniquely positioned to bridge theory and practice, honor human fragility alongside resilience, and inform ethically grounded, relational, and developmentally sensitive approaches to psychological well-being.

This Special Issue brings together Counselling psychology and Positive psychology in a dialogue shaped by both loss and legacy, following the passing of Anastassios Stalikas, a pioneer in the field. Drawing from conference contributions, the Ιssue explores how these traditions intersect across theory, research, and practice, with a particular focus on meaning-making, resilience, relationships, and human agency. The included studies move beyond individualistic models of well-being, emphasizing cultural context, relational processes, and narrative reconstruction. Articles address diverse populations and life stages, illustrating how individuals actively construct meaning, develop resilience through social support, and transform adversity into growth. Contributions on relationships highlight belonging, attachment, and family resilience as foundational to flourishing. Other papers examine counselling practice, positioning psychotherapy as a growth-oriented intervention that fosters emotional regulation, self-awareness, and adaptive life skills. The well-being of therapists themselves is also foregrounded, demonstrating how compassion satisfaction and reflective practice sustain empathic clinical work. Collectively, these contributions advance a culturally sensitive, contextually grounded Positive Psychology aligned with second- and third-wave approaches that integrate suffering, complexity, and social responsibility. The Special Issue thus honors Stalikas’ legacy while charting future directions for an inclusive, relational, and meaning-centered psychology.
Cancer often affects both patients and their partners. This prospective study aims to examine the role of optimism and family resilience in well-being and relationship quality in a sample of oncology patients and their partners. This longitudinal study included 96 cancer patients (N=48, M=56.56 years) and their partners (N=48, M=55.66 years). Data were collected using self-report scales measuring demographic characteristics, optimism (GrLOT-R), family resilience (WFRQ), well-being (PERMA Profiler), and relationship quality (QMI). The Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) was applied using the APIM_SEM web application to analyze dyadic relationships. In most cases, optimism and family resilience in both patients and their partners were positively associated with individual well-being and relationship quality. Patient family resilience was positively correlated with their partner’s well-being, whereas a negative relationship was observed between partner family resilience and patient well-being. Optimism had no dyadic effect on well-being or relationship quality. These findings highlight that family resilience, especially, contributes positively to well-being and relationship quality at both individual and interpersonal levels, even amid critical life events such as cancer. Future research could further explore the role of optimism, the role of partners, gender roles, or illness representations to clarify the observed differences between patients and their partners.
The present introduction of the special issue “Counseling and Positive Psychology in dialogue: Encounters, narratives and challenges” acts as a tribute to the memory of Professor Anastassios Stalikas and presents papers from the 8th Panhellenic Conference of Counseling Psychology and the 3rd Panhellenic Conference of Positive Psychology titled “Encounters, Narratives, Challenges” (Athens, November 2023). The introduction focuses on Stalikas’ scientific contribution and his pivotal role in establishing positive psychology in Greece. At the same time, it highlights Stalikas’ commitment to a strength-based, meaning-oriented, and non-pathologizing vision of psychotherapy. Moreover, this paper is an introduction to the articles presented in the issue and their theoretical background and focuses on contemporary developments in counselling psychology and positive psychology. The issue brings together 21 research studies and two discussion papers that depict current trends in counselling and positive psychology and address developmental transitions, interpersonal relationships, vulnerability and resilience, and wellbeing across diverse populations and contexts, including students, families, refugees, people with disabilities, patients with chronic illness, and mental health professionals. These studies depict current trends toward strenghth-based, narrative and relational approaches, social advocacy and empowerment and the recent shift in positive psychology from an individual focus on happiness to a more systems-informed perspective of flourishing. Overall, the contributions bring together counselling and positive psychology, reflecting and extending the dialogical legacy of Anastassios Stalikas.
Research on the coping strategies that prospective primary teachers (PPTs) employ when facing stressful life events (LEs) related to mathematics remains limited, and current models of mathematics anxiety do not sufficiently explain how such events—when appraised as negative—contribute to its development. This mixed-methods study is theoretically grounded in the interpretation account, a framework that highlights the role of individuals’ internal narratives and cognitive appraisals in shaping their emotional responses to mathematics. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 24 PPTs and analysed by using thematic qualitative text analysis to identify common types of LEs and coping strategies. The quantitative component involved descriptive statistical analysis of the frequency and distribution of these strategies across educational levels and in relation to when the LEs occurred. Findings showed that most LEs were associated with instructors’ pedagogical approaches or in-class behaviours, and with the perceived difficulty of mathematics. Participants predominantly used problem-focused coping strategies (e.g., instrumental support, active coping, planning), but also employed less adaptive ones—such as behavioural disengagement—which were reported across all educational stages, often in close temporal proximity to the LEs themselves, and more frequently during tertiary education. The study concludes by proposing targeted interventions that support PPTs in adopting adaptive coping strategies and in gradually reconstructing disfluent narrative identities formed through negative mathematics experiences.
The transition to university presents several challenges for emerging adults, with the literature revealing an association between university adaptation, life satisfaction and psychological resilience. Moreover, there is a growing interest in investigating the effect of personal therapy on overall student experience. The current study explored the role of personal therapy on the association between university adaptation, psychological resilience and life satisfaction. The sample consisted of 224 Greek-speaking students, 99 men (44.2%) and 125 women (55.4%), with a mean age of 21.61 years (SD = 2.95). Participants completed the College Adaptation Questionnaire, the Resilience Evaluation Scale and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. Results revealed that participants had statistically significant differences in university adaptation, (z = -5.18, p < .001), psychological resilience (z = -5.14, p < .001) and life satisfaction (z = -3.76, p < .001), with students who engaged in personal therapy scoring higher. Additionally, strong positive correlations were found between the three main variables (from rho = .56 to rho = .69, p< .001). Finally, mediation and moderation analysis revealed that psychological resilience partially mediated the relationship between university adaptation and life satisfaction, while university adaptation was found to be a stronger predictor of life satisfaction for students who engaged in personal therapy over students without therapy resulting in psychological therapy being a significant moderator of this association. Results point out the significant role of personal therapy, whereas its interpretation from the frame of counselling and positive psychology can provide clinical implications for improving the quality of university experience.
