The paper delves into the contributions of the Ingenbohl Sisters, a Swiss Catholic congregation, to the advancement of female education and the transformation of women's roles in Manchuria during the 1930s and 1940s. How did they contribute to the feminization of Catholic education? What impact did their efforts have on the status of women, cultural exchange, and identity formation within the dynamic socio-political context of the region? Focusing on the role of local women as educated catechists and the different types of mission schools, the paper analyses how professional efforts made by Ingenbohl Sisters in the education field contributed to modeling new ideas of women's roles within Chinese society. By employing a multidimensional approach encompassing archival research, media analysis, and visual representations, this study explores the transnational Catholic sisters' enduring legacy and its impact on the status of local women in the broader context of societal transformation during the first decades of twentieth-century Manchuria.
The article explores how historians can critically and effectively use generative artificial intel- ligence in historical research. After outlining the technology's development, from early Ai con- cepts to tools like ChatGpt, the author identifies four general & laquo;rules of the game & raquo; for interacting with Llms. The author then tests the use of Rag-enhanced chatbots (Retrieval Augmented Generation) such as PersonalAi, Google NotebookLm, and Coral Ai, on a corpus of Italian com- puter magazines (1978-1985), assessing their strengths-semantic search, contextual defini- tions, thematic mapping-and limitations, including inability to contextualize chronologically, distinguish voices within sources, or reliably avoid distortions. He concludes that historians must remain central to interpretation, know both their sources and the tools intimately, and demand features like large-scale Rag, verifiable citations, and metadata attribution.
This essay reviews four important recent books in the field of the history of the abuse crisis in the Catholic Church: Vincenzo Lavenia e Franco Benigno, Peccato o crimine. These books signal the opening of the historiographical research on abuse in the Catholic Church in a long-period perspective, with a more attentive focus on the international dimensions of the scandal and inter-disciplinary methodology. Historians now see in the abuse crisis a major turning point in Church history. This requires a new phase of research on the abuse crisis through collaborative endeavors aimed at interdisciplinary, historically contextualized accounts of the global history of the abuse of children and vulnerable adults in the Catholic Church in a comparative perspective with other institutions and organizations: from the focus on the & laquo;Catholic system & raquo;, to an analysis of that & laquo;Catholic system & raquo; but in the context of a larger ecosystem that enabled abuse.
During the belle epoque, plebeian verismo melodrama-best known for Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci-emerged as a highly successful and easily accessible subgenre of opera, characterized by popular settings, plots inspired by crime reports, and adulterous love triangles culminating in violent death, often at the hands of a betrayed husband or abandoned fianc & eacute;. Positioned at the intersection of opera studies and cultural history, this study examines librettos and contemporary opera reviews to reveal how the moving effect on audiences was driven by a fragile and weeping-yet not less violent-masculinity. Such masculinity was perfectly embodied by the betrayed tenor, who first despairs at the loss of his beloved and then, in a fit of rage, kills her in what is framed as a & laquo;crime of passion & raquo;. The invocation of unconditional love for the victim and the appeal to a deeply intimate tragedy by the perpetrator husband or the jilted partner served as a powerful rhetorical strategy to elicit the audience sympathy and the moral absolution for him and the crime committed.
