Below, I present a transcribed version of the presentation given by Professor Dominique Chemín on October 3, 2018, during the XX Congress of Otopames (2018), held at the Regional Museum of San Luis Potosí in tribute to the ethnological work of his wife Heidi Chemin Bässler. The transcription was made from a digital audio recording. The initial version faithfully reflects the orality of the speech: it included fillers, repetitions characteristic of Professor Chemín, as well as audience reactions —laughter, applause— and even spontaneous interruptions, such as a phone call taken during the presentation. In contrast, this final version was edited to remove those elements, the style was adjusted, and readability was optimized. However, both the recording and the first transcription are available upon request for those who need to consult them.
The paper proposes the concept of “waiting nodes” to reflect on the containment of the border regulatory regime and the spatial/temporal process in which people explore and adopt effective mobility alternatives to overcome obstacles and continue their transit in southern Mexico. It therefore addresses the spatial-temporal dimensions of waiting as well as the ways in which it is confronted by human agency, which is expressed in actions and strategies to break the material and symbolic anchors used to contain migrants. As part of these strategies, this article explores the phenomenon represented by the emergence of large contingents of people who travel using wheeled vehicles, among which bicycles stand out due to their number.
The present article seeks to examine the impact of unwanted and indefinite waiting on the transformations of migratory trajectories. In particular, we are interested in exploring agency capacity among migrants during these moments of uncertainty due to the need to wait. Some of the questions we ask are: What role does hope play in achieving the initial goal of reaching the United States? What options for maneuvering and decision-making exist amid uncertainty? How does the wear and tear of precarious conditions influence decisions regarding migration plans? How do resources such as prior information and support from social networks impact one's capacity for agency? For this work, we draw on qualitative fieldwork conducted between 2023 and 2024 with adult migrants of various nationalities residing in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, which we identify as a new waiting node within the South and Central American migration corridor to the United States.
This article aims to reflect on spatial practices and the process of constructing links between the inmobile population and the locals living in Tapachula, Chiapas and Tenosique, Tabasco in the south-east of Mexico. By identifying links that formed due to a project with impact and in the recurring meetings with activities, fun and formative workshops implemented in two strategic neighborhoods in these two cities, we showed that creating, facilitating and generating cooperation processes in public spaces not only allows us to promote co-existencem but also to create fair spaces where the inhabitants can come together to identify common problems and their possible solutions with the aim of eliminating spatial inequality. The empirical data were collected throughout the intervention work carried out between november 2022 and july 2024.
The article traces the effects on Mexican Catholicism of the encyclical Immortale Dei, proclaimed by Pope Leo XIII in 1885. In comparison with the multiple studies about the impact of the encyclical Rerum Novarum in Mexico, the attention paid to the Immortale Dei has been practically nil up to now. This research analyzes the relevance of this document in the context of the leonine pontificate. Likewise, the article identifies how the notion of a Catholic citizenship, the main component of the Immortale Dei, was configured in 19th century Mexico. Through this encyclical, the research establishes the relationship and the differences between the Catholics of the 19th century, politically ruined after the fall of the Second Empire, and the strong social and political activism that characterized the laity of 20th-century faced with the ideological preeminence of liberalism and revolutionary anti-clericalism.
Based on archaeological surveys conducted in 1986-87 in the southern region of the Altos de Jalisco, a re-evaluation of the temporal location of 30 recorded settlements is presented. In comparison with more recent studies, the relationships of the materials and architecture of these sites with the surrounding ceramic traditions in Jalisco and the Bajío are considered, pointing to an occupation during the Epiclassic period for most of the sites identified. The architecture of the sites exhibits patterns more easily identified as belonging to the Epiclassic period between 600 and 900 A.D., and akin to the Teuchitlán tradition, while their location and characteristics provide clues to determine their function. It is proposed that the presence of these sites in the south of the plateau of Los Altos is part of a corridor or regional control system that guarded the passage from different parts of the Bajío, towards the center of Jalisco, which must have been related to the exchange of basic resources such as obsidian and salt, among others, from neighboring regions, during this period. Finally, some observations are made about the temporality of the Peñol de Coyna, one of the most representative sites in this area, mentioned in colonial sources.
This article focuses on urban spaces inhabited by people experiencing in/mobility during a temporary stay in Tapachula City, Chiapas. We examine the uses of these urban spaces and the struggles associated with them among various actors. We approach urban space and its use as representations of power relations and the systems that regulate human activity. Our analysis is based on the ethnographic description of three specific cases observed during fieldwork: 1) the appropriation of space through the establishment of a «Haitian market»; 2) the remodeling of the central park; and 3) the relocation of migration authority offices following neighborhood mobilizations. Our aim is to highlight the experience of urban transformations in this border city and to show how people in situations of in/mobility participate in shaping social dynamics by interacting with, contrasting, and opposing other actors.
The main objective of this study is to analyze the process of construction of the Catholic-citizen identity and the networks founded by female Catholic activism during the revolution and post-revolution period. The case study of the Union of Mexican Catholic Ladies (1912-1932) is used to emphasize the way in which the Catholic women built their own civic identity around the defense of their devotional and religious life and in the constant reproduction of the traditional role of women. This identity gave them a political and public voice to defend the Church and religion against the ravages of the post-revolutionary secularism.
Since the nineties of the last century, the study of the religious dimension and its expression in the public arena has incorporated new questions. Although it continues to be relevant in the debate in the perspective of the secular state and the changes in its meaning, a reflection on the complexity of the processes of secularization of societies, which positions religion as an inherent element of culture and a facet of individual and collective identities, has also gained relevance.
