Urban expansion will squeeze the green space system and cause ecological fragmentation. The question of how to expand cities more scientifically and build eco-cities has become an important topic of sustainable urban construction. This paper takes Shanghai as a research case. A deep neural network combined with an attention mechanism model measures the comprehensive level of the built environment and green space pattern of urbanization and quantitatively analyzes the coordinated relationship between the two using the coupled degree of coordination model. Subsequently, the K-Means clustering model was used for spatial clustering to determine the governance and construction directions for different spatial areas and was, finally, combined with the LightGBM model plus SHAP to analyze the importance and threshold effect of the indicators on the degree of coupled coordination. The results of the study show that (1) the core area of the city shows a high state of coordination, indicating that Shanghai has a better green space construction in the central city, but the periphery shows different imbalances; (2) three different kinds of areas are identified, and different governance measures as well as the direction of urbanization are proposed according to the characteristics of the different areas; and (3) this study finds that the structural indicators of the built environment, such as Average Compactness, Weighted Average Height, and Land Use Diversity, have a significant influence on the coupling coordination degree and have different response thresholds. The results of the study provide theoretical support for regional governance and suggestions for the direction of urban expansion for sustainable urbanization.
Rapid urbanisation has exacerbated habitat fragmentation and degradation, necessitating urgent improvements to urban habitat quality. However, most current studies lack an analysis of spatial differences in local ecological quality, particularly a systematic exploration of how different urban spatial characteristics drive such differences. Based on this, we use Shanghai as an example, employing the InVEST model to assess habitat quality, and utilise CatBoost machine learning models and the SHAP model to reveal the specific spatial distribution characteristics of the habitat quality spatial differences from a morphological perspective, as well as its response to changes in urban spatial form factors. The results indicate that (1) urban habitat quality exhibits significant spatial differences, with quality differences persisting even within regions of the same habitat grade, demonstrating complex spatial characteristics; (2) density-related indicators such as building density and population density have a significant negative impact on the habitat quality spatial difference value, while configuration-related indicators such as the water ratio and Normalised Difference Vegetation Index have a significant positive effect, with Population Density contributing the most among all variables (20.74%); and (3) the variables exhibit significant nonlinearity and threshold effects. For example, when building density exceeds 0.05, the positive impact becomes a negative impact. The interactions between variables further reveal the multi-dimensional coupling mechanisms underlying habitat quality performance. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the spatial differences of urban habitat quality, providing scientific support for urban ecological zoning management, the optimised allocation of green space resources, and differentiated spatial governance while offering methodological and decision-making references for the construction of high-quality ecological cities.
Recreation spaces, as vital components of urban environments, support entertainment, relaxation, and social interaction. As a World Heritage city, Macao faces distinct challenges such as land scarcity, ecological pressures, and traffic congestion. This study identifies sustainable design strategies for recreation spaces to inform Macao’s urban development. Grounded in ecological perception theory, GIS technology is employed to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of recreation spaces, while grounded theory is applied to 27 online travel narratives to extract key factors influencing tourist satisfaction. A theoretical model of influencing factors and satisfaction pathways is developed and empirically validated using structured questionnaires and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that Macao’s recreation spaces exhibit a pattern of both concentration and dispersion. Three primary dimensions—physical environment, environmental perception, and cultural esthetic elements—are found to influence recreational satisfaction significantly and positively. Furthermore, a chain mediating effect among these dimensions is identified, revealing that the physical environment impacts satisfaction indirectly through environmental perception and cultural esthetics. This study offers practical guidance for the continuous enhancement of Macao’s recreational spaces and proposes a novel integrated model combining ecological, perceptual, and cultural esthetic perspectives. The findings also provide valuable theoretical insights for the planning and optimization of recreational spaces in other urban settings. This study provides not only practical design guidance for the continuous improvement of recreational spaces in Macao but also a new model combining ecological, perceptual and cultural esthetic perspectives for the research and planning of recreational spaces in other cities.
ObjectiveCoastal cities are susceptible to both internal and external factors, making them difficult to recover under the frequent influence of human activities. These factors collectively contribute to the vulnerability of marine ecosystems, posing numerous challenges for the protection and construction of coastal cities in terms of ecology, culture, and environment. Among these challenges, the imbalance of ecological and cultural resources stands out prominently. This research aims to explore the construction of an ecological and marine cultural composite landscape network, so as to promote the coupling and coordination between marine culture and the ecological environment, and optimize the allocation of ecological and marine cultural landscape resources. This will not only protect important ecological resources and cultural habitats but also strengthen the connections between them.MethodsIntegrated application of MSPA, landscape connectivity evaluation, MCR model, K-means clustering, Linkage Mapper, and cultural corridor spatial pattern model enable the construction of ecological network and marine-cultural network for the research area. The coupling of the aforesaid ecological network and cultural network forms a composite landscape network pattern. An evaluation indicator system for the coupling degree of ecological and cultural functions is constructed, and the entropy weight method is used to calculate index weights and the coupling coordination degree. Functional evaluations and hierarchical optimizations of the composite landscape network are conducted.ed on the evaluation results of the gravity model, these corridors are classified into first-class, second-class, and third-class corridors, forming the spatial pattern of the Quanzhou ecological network.ResultsThe MCR model identifies 136 potential ecological corridors, totaling 4381.139 km. Based on the evaluation results of the gravity model, these corridors are classified into first-class, second class, and third-class corridors, forming the spatial pattern of the Quanzhou ecological network. Linkage Mapper identifies 19 cultural corridors, totaling 888.001 km, and combined with the influence scope of core cultural landscape information points, the spatial pattern of the Quanzhou cultural network is constructed. The dissemination range of cultural landscape information points is between 0.04 km and 15.19 km. The integration of the ecological and cultural networks results in a composite pattern of Quanzhou’s marine cultural and ecological landscape network. Considering the corridor radiation range, a 1,000 m buffer along the composite corridor network is taken as the evaluation object for each corridor. Using the coupling coordination degree calculation formula, the coupling coordination degree of 62 corridors is calculated and classified according to the coupling coordination degree standard, forming the evaluation results of Quanzhou’s ecological and marine cultural composite landscape network. The results indicate that 1 corridor is severely imbalanced, 16 moderately imbalanced, 32 basically balanced, 11 moderately balanced, and 2 in excellent balance.ConclusionThe regional comprehensive coupling coordination degree of the composite corridors reveals a gradual decrease as the distance from coastal and central urban areas increases. The results show that the degree of coupling coordination presents the spatial characteristics of increasing from the coastal and central urban areas to the periphery. This phenomenon mainly considers the following two factors: first, the quality of the ecological environment in the northern, western and central regions is better, the ecological network coverage is complete, and the distribution of marine cultural resources is balanced; second, although the coastal and central urban areas have dense cultural heritage sites and prominent cultural values, the lack of ecological sources and urban environmental problems have led to a decrease in the coordination of their landscape corridors. Therefore, in the optimization of the complex landscape corridor, we should focus on the restoration of the ecological problems in the coastal areas and the central urban areas, and transform the cultural-oriented network into an ecological-cultural dual-function network Secondly, in the interior of the basic coordination section corridor, should focus on the ecological function and regional characteristics to enhance the cultural value. The construction and optimization strategy of Quanzhou’s ecological and marine culture composite landscape network provides a basis for the integration, flow, efficient utilization and overall protection of Quanzhou’s ecological and cultural resources, it also provides a reference template for the comprehensive coordinated protection of ecology and culture and the integrated sustainable development of coastal cities.
Urbanisation is a significant driver of global climate change. It increases global temperatures, impacting the health of residents. To date, research on urban heat environments has focused on society or ecology, overlooking the value of integrating the two factors. The research objective is to integrate socio-ecological benefits, explore the construction methods of ecological-cooling networks, and provide reasonable guidance for urban climate planning, thus contributing to the alleviation of urban heat risks and improving thermal comfort. Using Fuzhou as an example, an environmental risk framework was used to construct an urban heat environment risk assessment strategy based on hazards (thermal comfort), exposure (human-development footprint), and vulnerability (natural geographic conditions). The source area was identified based on evaluation results, an ecological network was constructed using circuit theory, and key nodes were identified. Results showed that in 2005 and 2020, 3% and 12% of areas in Fuzhou had higher thermal environmental risks, the proportion of low-risk areas was 43% and 28%, respectively. In sum, 54 ecological source locations, 124 ecological corridors, 76 ecological pinch points, 110 obstacle points, and 12 stepping stones were identified during the construction of corridors in 2020. Compared with 2005, the source area has decreased by 1622.46 km2 and the average length of the corridor has also decreased by 4.69 km.
Fujian Tulous in China are important international architectural heritage sites that reflect precious human cultural heritage. Currently, only a small number of Tulou buildings have been listed as world cultural heritage sites, resulting in a lack of attention and financial support for most Tulou buildings. Thus, it is difficult to effectively renovate and repair Tulou buildings to adapt to modern life, and therefore they are facing the severe challenge of abandonment and desolation. Due to the special conditions of Tulou buildings, there are significant limitations in renovation and repair work, with a number of problems such as the lack of innovative renovations. Therefore, through a problem model analysis of a design system for Tulou renovations, in this study, we adopt the methods of divergent tree, conjugate pair, correlative net, implied system, and split-merge chain analyses in extenics to carry out extension transformation and solve the problem and we verify its feasibility using the example of the Tulou renovation projects in Lantian Village, Longyan City. We explore an innovative methodology for scientific renovation of Tulou buildings, and we establish a design system for Tulou building renovations that enriches and supplements original renovation methods; thus, we provide a basis for the repair and reuse of Tulou buildings, to extend their service life and to realize the sustainable development of Tulou buildings. The research results show that extenics can be implemented in innovative renovations of Tulou buildings, and it is concluded that the essence of achieving sustainable renewal in Tulou building renovations is to solve contradictory problems, including contradictions in conditions, objectives, and design. This study verifies the possibility of applying extenics in the design of Tulou building renovations, makes corresponding contributions to the application of extension methods in the renovation and renewal of Tulou buildings, and also contributes to the renovation, renewal, and protection of other types of architectural heritage sites.
