Purpose This study aims to identify and evaluate the risks hindering the digital transformation of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry through the integration of digital and smart technologies (DSTs). It focuses on systematically uncovering risk factors and their characteristics to provide insights for effective risk management in DST integration. Design/methodology/approach Based on the technology-organization-environment framework, this study combined a comprehensive literature review with semi-structured interviews to identify 28 key risk factors associated with DST integration in construction projects. The hybrid DEMATEL-ISM-MICMAC approach was employed to analyze these factors, classifying them into seven levels, three layers and four types, while identifying critical risk factors. Findings This study reveals that the identified risk factors form a hierarchical system with distinct characteristics. Critical factors such as lack of experience with DSTs and the existence of uncertain costs exert significant influence on DST integration. The classification results further clarify the interdependencies and structural relationships among the risks, providing a clear understanding of their roles in the integration process. Practical implications By revealing the critical risks and their structural relationships in DST integration, this study enables AEC industry stakeholders to develop targeted risk mitigation strategies. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing key factors such as technical inexperience and cost uncertainties, offering practical guidance for improving the success rate of DST integration. Originality/value This study contributes to the existing literature by systematically exploring the risks specific to DST integration in the AEC industry, filling the gap in research on integrated technology risks. The application of the hybrid DEMATEL-ISM-MICMAC approach provides a nuanced and multi-dimensional analysis of risk factors, enhancing the theoretical understanding of DST integration risks.
PurposeThis study aims to explore the key facilitators influencing the resilience of mega infrastructure projects and proposes and validates a model of project resilience that integrates relationship management, resource management, process management, reactive and proactive resilience, anticipated outcomes and performance enhancement. It empirically validates this mechanism and identifies the critical resilience pathways, providing robust evidence to address the challenges of resilience management in the construction industry.Design/methodology/approachUsing exploratory factor analysis, reliability testing and structural equation modeling, the key facilitators that promote effective project resilience management were identified, and the proposed theoretical model was subsequently validated.FindingsData analysis identified three key project resilience facilitators: relationship management, process management and resource management. The study confirms the positive impact of process management and resource management on project resilience, proposing an optimized resilience management path. It emphasizes enhancing proactive resilience through strengthened process management to more effectively address risks and improve project performance.Originality/valueThis study develops an effective resilience management pathway that links process management, proactive resilience management and performance enhancement. It clarifies how these latent variables can be translated into practical management actions - such as enhancing dynamic monitoring, optimizing emergency mechanisms and strengthening process control - to build proactive resilience in the earlier time of mega infrastructure project management.
Purpose At the current stage of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) implementation, opportunistic behavior driven by perceived unfairness in risk-benefit allocation undermines project efficiency and sustainability. Relationship commitment, as a core element of partnership governance, provides insight into how perceptions of fairness translate into opportunistic behavior. Accordingly, this study examines the relationship between perceived fairness and opportunism, focusing on the mediating roles of affective and calculative commitment.Design/methodology/approach Guided by social exchange theory and relationship governance principles, this study develops and empirically tests a research framework using structural equation modeling. Data were collected from a questionnaire survey of 314 private-sector practitioners involved in PPP projects to examine the relationships among fairness perceptions, relationship commitment, and opportunistic behavior.Findings The study reveals compelling distinctions between affective and calculative commitment. Enhanced perceptions of fairness significantly reduce opportunistic behavior by fostering stronger affective commitment among private-sector participants. Notably, interactional fairness directly reduces calculative commitment, positioning it as an essential strategy for curbing opportunism universally. Conversely, distributive and procedural fairness emerge as pivotal dimensions for promoting sustained, cooperative relationships.Originality/value This research extends fairness theory into the PPP context by clarifying how different fairness dimensions influence opportunistic behavior through distinct commitment mechanisms. Theoretically, it advances understanding of the nuanced role of calculative and affective commitment in inter-organizational governance. Practically, the findings provide actionable guidance for public-sector managers in addressing pressing challenges such as mitigating opportunism, strengthening trust, and improving collaboration with private-sector partners.
Residents' attitudes and behaviors exert increasingly essential roles in the success of wholesale urban redevelopment and the resultant resettlement. While previous literature has extensively investigated the predominant impact of residents' cognitive reactions on their attitudes towards resettlement, with a focus on pre- or postresettlement phase, emotional experience, as an indispensable driving factor, has been largely disregarded. This study expands on existing research by offering a deep understanding of residents' emotion-based attitudes, drawing on insights from environmental psychology and human needs theory. Using individual-level data from a nationwide questionnaire survey in urbanizing China, the statistical results prove that owing to differing situational factors before and after resettlement, two discrete emotions (i.e., worry and satisfaction) are invoked and shape residents' attitudes in opposite directions. Furthermore, the emotions manifest across six specific dimensions related to resettlement. The ordered probit regression results reveal a fine-grained relationship between dimension-specific emotions and attitudes. Community attachment and housing and facility conditions emerge as significant determinants of attitudes in two phases respectively, whereas government behavior holds a long-lasting impact. These insights offer valuable recommendations for policymakers to govern residents' emotions and garner their support throughout the resettlement process.
Amidst the ongoing transformation of urban landscapes worldwide, this study examines the dynamic evolution of Beijing’s urban rail transit network from 2013 to 2022, focusing on the interplay between urban spatial changes and passenger travel behavior. Utilizing an enhanced node-place model and a sophisticated stacking ensemble machine learning approach, we analyze a decade of subway station development and the shifting transit patterns within the city’s spatial structure. Our findings reveal a distinct phase of renovation and refinement in Beijing’s subway network, emphasizing the evolving role of node characteristics and place indicators in influencing ridership. By integrating diverse data sources, this study deepens our understanding of the complex relationships between urban rail transit, spatial dynamics, and ridership patterns. The insights gained offer valuable guidance for both subway renovation projects and emerging cities, addressing existing knowledge gaps and providing practical recommendations for policymakers and urban planners working to optimize transit systems in rapidly evolving metropolitan environments.
In the realm of infrastructure projects, the evolution of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) underscores the importance of cultivating enduring relationships between the government and the private sector. The focus on the franchise business style also underscores the significant impact of social sector involvement on project performance. The quality of relationship management stands as a pivotal factor influencing project success. However, both unintentional damage and opportunistic behavior, stemming from information incompleteness and the intricacies of megaprojects, exert adverse effects on project performance. Responding effectively to emergencies is a crucial aspect of project management and contract planning for project team members. Organizational resilience, denoting the efficacy of project team members in addressing anticipated or unforeseen disruptions and formulating corresponding countermeasures, plays a central role. Specifically, research shows that organizational resilience attributes such as effective collaboration among members, robust social network relationships, crisis leadership capabilities, and organizational culture. Dynamic resilience encompasses the organizational capacity for anticipating, coping with uncertain events or risks, and the ability to recover and surpass the original state. Drawing from social exchange theory and transaction theory, this study delves into the intricate connections among relationship quality, organizational resilience, and PPP project performance. Structural Equitation Modeling analysis of data collected from 334 construction professionals reveals that organizational resilience acts as a partial mediator in ensuring effective relationship management. Additionally, the study uncovers that asset specificity serves as a positive regulatory moderator in the relationship between quality and resilience. Recommendations emanating from the study advocate for proactive measures, including the establishment of emergency resource reserves and the mitigation of cultural differences between government and private sector entities. A tailored dynamic resilience management plan needs to be developed based on the project's specificity. These insights contribute to fostering improved collaboration and performance in PPP projects.
The rapid advancement of AI, especially large language models (LLMs), brings opportunities and challenges to industries. In construction, LLMs can enhance project coordination, support decision-making and reduce workload, but adoption is limited by hallucination, data security and domain complexity. This study investigates the current state of LLM adoption in China’s construction industry through a four-step approach, including a comprehensive literature review to identify potential drivers and barriers, questionnaire design and data collection for empirical analysis, and the application of the Entropy Weight Method (EWM) to quantify and rank the relative importance of each factor. The findings reveal that the top drivers originate at the company level, including strategic partnerships, internal research teams, and staff training—highlighting the central role of organizational readiness in enabling LLM integration. Conversely, the most critical barriers are embedded in the construction domain itself, including knowledge gaps, workflow integration, and data heterogeneity, which reflect structural limitations in the sector. Although LLM implementation remains in its early stages, survey responses show widespread optimism among stakeholders regarding its future potential. The study proposes several actionable strategies for both construction firms and policymakers to facilitate effective LLM adoption. Moreover, the identified drivers and barriers are not exclusive to construction but are also relevant to other digitally transforming sectors—such as manufacturing, healthcare, and energy—offering broader implications for AI adoption in complex, project-based environments.
In the era of the digital economy, it has become an inevitable trend for manufacturing enterprises to establish industrial Internet platforms toward achieving transformation and innovative development. However, the current development model of industrial Internet platforms is still imperfect, wherein the application scenario is complex, the investment cost is too high, the return-on-investment cycle is too long, and other factors have hindered the willingness of manufacturing enterprises to employ cloud services and capital investment. For this reason, governments have introduced a series of relevant incentive policies to promote the development of industrial Internet platforms and the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing enterprises. Considering the role of government incentives, this study first constructs an evolutionary game model with local governments, manufacturing enterprises, and industrial Internet platforms as the main players. Then, the dynamic change process of each game player’s strategy choice and the stable state of the system evolution under multiple scenarios are analyzed, and the validity of the conclusions is verified through a numerical simulation analysis. Finally, the statistical data of 28 provinces in China from 2018 to 2020 are used to conduct an empirical test to explore the impact of the industrial Internet on the transformation and innovation development of the manufacturing industry and the role of government incentives. The results show that the development of the industrial Internet has a significant role in promoting the innovation and development of the manufacturing industry; government incentives can promote the innovation and development of the industrial Internet and manufacturing industry, but incentives should not be too generous; and the impact of developing the industrial Internet on the level of innovation input/output of the manufacturing industry shows obvious regional differences. This study takes the local government as an independent game participant into consideration, which enriches the research field of combining evolutionary game theory with the transformation and innovative development of the manufacturing industry. In addition, this study provides theoretical guidance and practical references for the government to formulate incentive policies to promote the development of industrial Internet platforms and for manufacturing enterprises to utilize these platforms to carry out innovation and perform upgrades.
Social infrastructure has become an important element for measuring national economic development and social benefits that are usually financed in the form of government grants, private investment, and public-private partnerships (PPPs). However, social infrastructure PPPs have attracted considerable public debate due to their low profitability and complex operational demands. This study aims to answer the question, "are PPPs still an answer for social infrastructure?", from the perspectives of the body of knowledge, application status, and prospects. Initially, an iterative search and review procedure and a scientometric analysis were performed to systematically screen the literature and to structure the body of knowledge of the social infrastructure PPPs literature. Furthermore, the application status and trends were analyzed to further explore the studied countries/regions, application sectors, and research topics. Results show that PPPs still have valuable application potential for delivering social infrastructure despite their mixed results across different topics. Six main research themes and the corresponding research trends were also identified, namely, financing and economics viability, risk management, performance management, contract and relationship management, governance and regulation, and facilitating and hindering factors. These findings offer practitioners and researchers a comprehensive overview and constructive guidance on social infrastructure PPPs.
The synergistic development of metropolitan areas led by megacities is considered a driving force in achieving regional coordination and the high-quality development of urban agglomerations. Extant studies have often neglected the spatial structure of metropolitan areas under the guidance of megacities. This study sought to explore the radiation effect of central cities, the development capacity of metropolitan subcentral cities, and the intermediary role of metropolitan hub cities in the metropolitan area. Based on the modified gravitational model and social network analysis, we constructed a spatial connection network of the Shanghai metropolitan area with districts and counties as the basic research units and analyzed the characteristics from two perspectives: network hierarchy and network structure. Our results indicated the following: (1) The connection strength of the metropolitan area decreased from the center of the network to the periphery. (2) The polycentric pattern was gradually forming, but a significant gap remained between the radiation range and capacity of central and subcentral cities. (3) The clustering phenomenon in the metropolitan area was significant, and the degrees of internal connection and external radiation ability of each subgroup differed. (4) The core-edge structure as obvious, but its intermediary role in the network was relatively weak. Our findings revealed the spatial relationship pattern of metropolitan areas led by megacities and have implications for formulating scientific policies to promote the coordinated spatial development of metropolitan areas and the high-quality development of urban agglomerations.

Residents' concerns and feelings play pivotal roles in smoothly promoting urban redevelopment. Anxiety, as an intuitive feeling toward uncertainties, generally exists among residents who are confronted with redevelopment, and this feeling has gradually attracted scholars' attention. However, relatively few studies have focused on the multidimensional view of this concept and its influencing factors. Drawing upon a large-scale questionnaire survey conducted in 13 pilot areas in China, this study refines and verifies five prominent dimensions of anxiety, namely, housing conditions, monetary compensation, public services, life adaptation, and public participation level, through factor analysis and one-samplet-test. The finding contributes to achieving a complete understanding of anxiety, and the scales developed for measuring these dimensions lay the foundation for further empirical studies on anxiety. The individual and collective effects of age, job, and region variables on anxiety dimensions are demonstrated via independent-samplet-test and analysis of variance, which clarifies the formation process of anxiety and highlights the importance of these contextual variables. Tailored strategies for policymaking and engineering management, including establishing reasonable compensation standards, providing equal public services, and delivering high-quality housing, are proposed to relieve residents' anxiety. These strategies are expected to consider further the sensitive group, such as the elderly, farmers, and casual workers.

将心理契约作为研究公私合营伙伴关系(PPP)新的切入点,可通过其促进合作伙伴对彼此的潜在信任,加强双方的合作行为,从而改善公共部门和私人资本合作的PPP项目绩效.目前,对PPP领域的研究大多集中在显性契约方面,而心理契约在PPP项目绩效的研究领域中涉及较少.因此,从心理契约视角出发,探究其在PPP项目中对绩效的改善机理.以组织间关系理论和社会交换理论为基础,提出将心理契约作为自变量,研究合作行为的中介作用,引入并分析关系承诺作为调节变量对于PPP项目绩效的影响,提出了变量之间关系假设和结构方程模型框架,从而为心理契约影响PPP项目绩效的相关研究提供了新的思路,并为在PPP实践中改善项目绩效提供了针对性的建议与对策.
Adopting a holistic approach in the review of the public-private partnership (PPP) literature published since 2008 by incorporating scientometric analysis and further systematic analysis, this study aims to provide the big picture of the state-of-the-art research in PPP by addressing major issues and suggesting research trends in PPP. Following a three-step research methodology, this study started from a bibliometric analysis with science mapping to provide the state-of-the-art information on PPP research keywords, scholars, journal articles, institutions, and countries. A further systematic review was also conducted to identify future research directions of PPP in project management. The review of the existing literature in PPP revealed that there had been insufficient systematic approach in summarizing the research topics and proposing new research trends in PPP-related project management. It was further indicated that sustainability and innovation in PPP could be further studied, such as integrating building information modeling with PPP. Factors related to barriers in PPP implementation would continue growing. Future research directions in PPP were also proposed following the systematic review, for example, comparative studies of PPP practice between developing and developed countries. The current study provides a comprehensive approach by integrating bibliometric analysis, science mapping, and qualitative analysis in the latest PPP research. It reveals the contemporary research themes in PPP and provides directions for near-future directions of PPP research in project management.
结合内容分析法和计量可视化分析法,利用SATI文献统计分析软件、SPSS软件、UCINET社会网络分析软件以CNKI数据库选取的PPP领域中期刊论文和硕博论文为样本分析和评述2008年至2017年我国PPP领域的研究现状,探讨我国PPP领域研究和发展的趋势特征.通过对研究主题、研究性质、研究方法的内容分析和对作者、发文机构、研究热点进行计量可视化分析,得出PPP研究的知识图谱.分析结果表明:PPP在2013年PPP改革以来迎来爆发式增长,目前PPP研究处于理论与实践深入发展期;研究方法和理论的多样化,使PPP跨学科研究成为趋势;研究主题由前期的对PPP理论和PPP基本决策问题、风险分担问题转移到对PPP的效率和管理进行探索;PPP项目在新应用领域推进的阻碍与挑战,PPP模式的创新以及将PPP管理和应用与不同情境维度相结合是未来研究的热点主题.
对1984至2017年间我国中央政府颁布的工程总承包政策展开综合量化研究,通过文献计量和内容分析方法,运用SATI3.2和UCINET软件,分析发文时间和机构的文献外部属性特征,并挖掘文献内部语义政策工具类别.研究表明,工程总承包政策发文数量与其发展阶段特征相吻合;发文机构较单一,尚未形成完善的政策体系;此外,工程总承包政策工具结构不尽合理,应采用更加多元化的政策工具组合.
There is an increase of megaproject construction worldwide. At the same time, risks involved in megaprojects have also become a wide concern. Extending from the macrolevel of qualitative analysis focusing on complexity, politics, and morality, the research conducted the microscopic empirical analysis on twenty-two typical cases by adopting the quality comparative analysis (QCA) from the auditing perspective. Different from the traditional analysis method taking each causation as independent variable, the results in the study revealed that there was complex multiple concurrent causation among eight conditions; additionally, the configuration of those would be divided into six types, among which, the coverage of the three types, namely, project management risk, preliminary and construction risk, and tendering and contract management related risk, was almost eighty percent. Finally, megaproject risks in China were caused by complicated and changeable combination conditions, which would provide a new breakthrough for seeking analyzing megaproject risks through this quantitative analysis method, and indicate the researchers and practitioners to control the megaproject risks from a more systematic way.
