The hapax legomena growth pattern is an important field in quantitative linguistics. There have been some initial findings about the hapax legomena growth pattern in written English; however, an examination of literature shows that there are few studies on it in spoken English. Based on the BNC spoken corpus, this study applied the quantitative linguistics method to investigate the hapax legomena growth pattern in spoken English. The result reveals that the hapax/vocabulary ratio forms a downward-sloping “L.” As the size of the text increases, the number of hapax legomena increases slowly, and correspondingly, the hapax/vocabulary ratio decreases gradually; thus, it follows an L-shaped pattern. The reparametrized Tuldava’s model captures the relationship between the hapax/vocabulary ratio and text length, the theoretical pattern of ratios, and the respective 95% lower and upper bound values of the estimates. This power model provides a reasonably good fit for the observed hapax/vocabulary ratio curve. The present study provides a deeper understanding of hapax legomena in spoken English.
Introduction in General Terminology and Terminological Lexicography is a classics of modern terminology. This paper introduces main contents and innovation of this book, and points out some shortcomings in this book.
Based on the Chinese-English Sentence-Aligned Bilingual Corpus, this paper investigates the relationship between overall vocabulary growth as well as growth of hapax legomena and text length for English and Chinese, and tests if Brunet's model is fit for the vocabulary growth curves of Chinese and English texts. Results of the study show that English and Chinese display universal features with respect to the relationship between vocabulary size and text length.Their vocabularies follow a similar sharp-slow increasing pattern, with the Chinese vocabulary growth rising more sharply than that of English at the initial stage.Brunet's model provides a very good fit for both English and Chinese. In addition, growth curves of English and Chinese hapax legomena both rise sharply initially, but with the increase of cumulative tokens, their growth rates slow down.
This paper discusses the strategic transit of contemporary linguistics. After the analysis of the strategic transit in computational linguistics,it is evidenced that traditional linguistics is facing serious challenges from empiricism, and the introspection or elicitation approaches will be gradually replaced by the corpus-based or corpus-driven approach, but deep insights into language phenomena and rational thinking are both necessary. The combination of rationalism and empiricism shows the strategic transit in contemporary linguistics.
Kit Chunyu Feng Zhiwei Abstract: This paper reviews the history and theoretical background for the traditional definition of term and recognize its positive role in previous terminology work such as terminology standardization. Based on available evidence from real text data, however, we point out the limitations of this definition and propose an ontology-based definition as a call for the development of ontological terminology.

根据计算术语学的原理,使用短语结构语法对词组型术语进行了自动句法分析.通过具体的实例,介绍了两种基于短语结构语法的剖析方法--自底向上剖析和自顶向下剖析.
This paper analyzes the theoretical background of traditional definition for term and its positive functions in terminology work. In the same time, this paper also points out the limitations of traditional definition for term, and proposes an ontology-based definition for term.
In this paper, the rationalism and empiricism and its influence to natural language processi are analyzed, the advantages and the disadvantages of rule-based rationalist approach and statistics-bas empiricist approach are compared. The author proposes to combine these two approaches in order to prom the development of natural language processing. The paper also discussed the procedure from ontology conc in philosophy to ontological engineering in natural language processing.
In traditional terminology, the relations between conceptions in terminology can be divided into two types: logical relation and ontological relation. In this paper, the author suggests to take the ontology as the unique foundation for the study of relation between conceptions in terminology.
