PurposeThis study aims to investigate the influencing factors underlying academic digital hoarding behavior (ADHB) among undergraduate students, which provides theoretical guidance for optimizing undergraduate students' personal academic information management practices.Design/methodology/approachBased on the grounded theory, this study employed a qualitative exploratory approach and collected data through semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed by open coding, axial coding and selective coding to identify the main influencing factors of undergraduate students' ADHB.FindingsThis study identifies the internal and external influencing factors of undergraduate students' ADHB. Specifically, internal factors include personal characteristic factors (personality, values, digital literacy and lifestyle) and personal psychological factors (perception, emotion and motivation), whereas external factors include digital academic information factors (quality characteristic and quantity characteristic) and environmental factors (task situation, technological condition and social influence).Originality/valueThis study advances scholarly understanding of individuals' hoarding behavior by investigating the drivers of undergraduate students' ADHB. It enriches research on digital hoarding behavior and personal information management.
Social comparison on social media has become a pervasive phenomenon. Prior studies mainly examined the effects of social comparison on users' cognitive and affective responses. The present study aims to uncover the influencing mechanism of social comparison on social media on users' behavioural responses. Based on the stressor-strain-outcome (S-S-O) model, this study proposes a research model to investigate the effects of social media users' social comparison on their behavioural responses (i.e., discontinuance and information avoidance) through the mediating roles of negative emotions (i.e., envy and fatigue). The model is tested using 353 valid data from WeChat users in China. Results show that social comparison on social media is a significant driver of envy and fatigue, and the impact of social comparison on envy is greater than that on fatigue. In addition, envy and fatigue have strong effects on social media users' discontinuance and information avoidance. This study theoretically and empirically explains the negative consequences of social comparison, advancing our understanding of the dark side of social media use and expanding the relevant research.
Purpose This study aims to investigate the antecedents and outcomes of excessive use of personal social media at work. The prevalence of personal social media in the work environment can easily lead to excessive use and negative consequences. Understanding the predictive factors and negative consequences of employees' excessive use of personal social media at work is important to develop their appropriate use of social media and improve their job performance. Design/methodology/approach Based on dual-system theory and the person-environment fit model, this study develops a research model to examine the effect of habit and self-regulation on excessive use of personal social media at work and that of the outcomes of excessive use on employee job performance through strain. This study conducts a questionnaire survey on 408 employees to test the research model and hypotheses empirically. Findings Results suggest that the imbalance between habit and self-regulation drives excessive personal social media use of employees at work. Furthermore, excessive use of personal social media has a strong impact on employee strain, which can significantly decrease job performance. Originality/value First, this study considers excessive use of personal social media at work as a result of two different cognitive systems, that is, an automatic system and a controlled system, thereby extending the dual-system theory to explain excessive use of personal social media in the work context. Second, unlike previous studies that focused on the outcomes or explored the antecedents of excessive social media use at work respectively, the study employs the person-environment fit model and examines the systematic influence of excessive social media use at work from a broad perspective by linking its antecedents and outcomes.

PurposeGrounded on the cognition–affect–conation (C–A–C) framework, this study aims to explore how perceived information overload affects the information avoidance intention of social media users through fatigue, frustration and dissatisfaction.Design/methodology/approach/methodology/approachA quantitative research design is adopted. The data collected from 254 respondents in China are analyzed via structural equation modeling (SEM).FindingsPerceived information overload directly affects fatigue, frustration and dissatisfaction among social media users, thereby affecting their information avoidance intention. In addition, frustration significantly affects social media fatigue and dissatisfaction. Consequently, social media fatigue influences dissatisfaction among users.Originality/valueThe literature review indicates that social media overload and fatigue yield negative behavioral outcomes, including discontinuance. However, rather than completely abstaining or escaping, social media users adopt moderate strategies, including information avoidance, to cope with overload and fatigue owing to their high dependence on social media. Unfortunately, merely few studies are available on the information avoidance behavior of social media users. Focusing on this line of research, the current study develops a model to investigate the antecedents of information avoidance in social media.
According to the stimulus–organism–response (S–O–R) paradigm, this study aims to understand how interactivity affects SNS users’ loyalty through user experience of presence and flow. Data collected from 242 respondents was analyzed with structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that machine interactivity affects telepresence and flow, person interactivity affects social presence and flow, social presence affects flow and flow further affects SNS users’ loyalty. In addition, telepresence has a significant effect on social presence.
Purpose The problematic use of social media progressively worsens among a large proportion of users. However, the theory-driven investigation into social media addiction behavior remains far from adequate. Among the countable information system studies on the dark side of social media, the focus lies on users' subjective feelings and perceived value. The technical features of the social media platform have been ignored. Accordingly, this study explores the formation of social media addiction considering the perspectives of users and social media per se on the basis of extended motivational framework and attachment theory. Design/methodology/approach This study investigates the formation of social media addiction with particular focus on WeChat. A field survey with 505 subjects of WeChat users was conducted to investigate the research model. Findings Results demonstrate that social media addiction is determined by individuals' emotional and functional attachment to the platform. These attachments are in turn influenced by motivational (perceived enjoyment and social interaction) and technical (informational support, system quality and personalization) factors. Originality/value First, this study explains the underlying mechanism of how users develop social media addiction. Second, it highlights the importance of users' motivations and emotional dependence at this point. It also focuses on the technical system of the platform that plays a key role in the formation of addictive usage behavior. Third, it extends attachment theory to the context of social media addictive behavior.
