We report measurements of the inclusive production of heavy quarkonium states in Z decays based on the analysis of 3.6 million hadronic events collected by the L3 detector at LEP. The measurement of inclusive J production and an improved 95% confidence level upper limit on F production are presented. In addition, two independent measurements of the ratio, f of prompt J mesons to those from B decay are made using two different isolation cuts to separate prompt J mesons from J mesons produced in the decays of b hadrons. The results are: Br(Z TM J + X) = (3.21 + 0.21 (stat.) J^1/ (sys.)) X 10 y 3, Br(Z TM F(1S) + X) < 4.4 X 10 y 5, fp = (7.1 + 2.1 (stat.) + 1.2(sys.) qjg (theo.)) X 10 y 2 . © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. A search for pair–produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3 detector at LEP using data collected at a centre–of–mass energy of 188.6 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176.4 pb−1. Higgs decays into a charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its associated neutrino are considered. The observed events are consistent with the expectations from Standard Model background processes. A lower limit of 65.5 GeV on the charged Higgs mass is derived at 95% confidence level, independent of the decay branching ratio Br(H± → τν). Submitted to Phys. Lett. B
Inclusive production of D * ± mesons in two-photon collisions was measured by the L3 experiment at LEP. The data were collected at a centre-of-mass energy Js = 189 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 176.4 pb 1 2345678. Differential cross sections of the process ee ^ee l)‘ X are determined as functions of the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the D* ± mesons in the kinematic region 1 GeV < p'/ < 5GeV and |t|d | < 1.4. The cross section integrated over this phase space domain is measured to be 132 + 22(stat.) + 26(syst.)pb. The differential cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. © 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The cross section of W-boson pair-production is measured with the L3 detector at LEP. In a data sample corresponding to a total luminosity of 629.4 pb−1, collected at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 209 GeV, 9834 four-fermion events with W bosons decaying into hadrons or leptons are selected. The total cross section is measured with a precision of 1.4% and agrees with the Standard Model expectation. Assuming charged-lepton universality, the branching fraction for hadronic W-boson decays is measured to be: Br(W→hadrons)=67.50±0.42(stat.)±0.30(syst.)%, in agreement with the Standard Model. Differential cross sections as a function of the W− production angle are also measured for the semi-leptonic channels qqeν and qqμν.
We report the result of a search for charginos and neutralinos, in e+e- collisions at 189 GeV centre-of-mass energy at LEP. No evidence for such particles is found in a data sample of 176 pb^-1. Improved upper limits for these particles are set on the production cross sections. New exclusion contours in the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are derived, as well as new lower limits on the masses of these supersymmetric particles. Under the assumptions of common gaugino and scalar masses at the GUT scale, we set an absolute lower limit on the mass of the lightest neutralino of 32.5 GeV and on the mass of the lightest chargino of 67.7 GeV.
A search for excited leptons, e*, mu*, tau*, nu_e*, nu_mu*, and nu_tau* was performed with the L3 detector at LEP using data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 176 pb^-1. No evidence of their production is observed. From the searches for pair produced excited leptons, lower mass limits are set close to the kinematic limit. From the searches for singly produced excited leptons, upper limits on their couplings are derived in the mass range up to 189 GeV.
The three different helicity states of W bosons, produced in the reaction e+e- -> W+W- -> l nu q q are studied using leptonic and hadronic W decays at sqrts=183GeV and 189GeV. The W polarisation is also measured as a function of the scattering angle between the W- and the direction of the e- beam. The analysis demonstrates that W bosons are produced with all three helicities, the longitudinal and the two transverse states. Combining the results from the two center-of-mass energies and with leptonic and hadronic W decays, the fraction of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured to be 0.261 +/- 0.051(stat.) +/- 0.016(syst.) in agreement with the expectation from the Standard Model.
Bhabha scattering data recorded at \sqrt{s}=189 GeV by the L3 detector at LEP are used to measure the running of the effective fine-structure constant for spacelike momentum transfers. The results are alpha^-1(-2.1 GeV^2) - alpha^-1(-6.25 GeV^2) = 0.78 +/- 0.26 alpha^-1(-12.25 GeV^2) - alpha^-1(-3434 GeV^2) = 3.80 +/- 1.29, in agreement with theoretical predictions.
The total and differential cross sections of the process e(+)e(-) --> n gamma with n greater than or equal to 2 are measured using data collected by the L3 experiment at centre-of-mass energies of root s = 183 and 189 GeV, The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. Limits are set on deviations from QED, contact interaction cut-off parameters and masses of excited electrons. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
We have measured the probability, n(g->cc ), of a gluon splitting into a charm-quark pair using 1.7 million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 detector. Two independent methods have been applied to events with a three-jet topology. One method relies on tagging charmed hadrons by identifying a lepton in the lowest energy jet. The other method uses a neural network based on global event shape parameters. Combining both methods, we measure n(g->cc )= [2.45 +/- 0.29 +/- 0.53]
A search for charginos nearly mass-degenerate with the lightest supersymmetric particle is performed using the 176 pb^-1 of data collected at 189 GeV in 1998 with the L3 detector. Mass differences between the chargino and the lightest supersymmetric particle below 4 GeV are considered. The presence of a high transverse momentum photon is required to single out the signal from the photon-photon interaction background. No evidence for charginos is found and upper limits on the cross section for chargino pair production are set. For the first time, in the case of heavy scalar leptons, chargino mass limits are obtained for any \tilde{\chi}^{+-}_1 - \tilde{\chi}^0_1 mass difference.
A first measurement of the cross section of the process e+e- -> Z gamma gamma is reported using a total integrated luminosity of 231 pb^-1 collected with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies of 182.7 GeV and 188.7 GeV. By selecting hadronic events with two isolated photons the e+e- -> Z gamma gamma cross section is measured to be 0.49 +0.20 -0.17 +/- 0.04 pb at 182.7 GeV and 0.47 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.04 pb at 188.7 GeV. The measurements are consistent with Standard Model expectations. Limits on Quartic Gauge Boson Couplings a_0/Lambda^2 and a_c/Lambda^2 of -0.009 GeV^-2 < a_0/Lambda^2 < 0.008 GeV^-2 and -0.007 GeV^-2 < a_c/Lambda^2 < 0.013 GeV^-2 are derived at 95% confidence level.
A study of neutral-current four-fermion processes is performed using a data sample corresponding to 55.3 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the L3 detector at LEP at an average centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV. The neutral-current four-fermion cross sections for final slates with a pair of charged leptons plus jets and with four charged leptons are measured to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions.Events with fermion pair masses close to the Z boson mass are selected in all observable final states and the ZZ production cross section is measured to be sigma ZZ = 0.30(-0.16-0.03)(+0.22 + 0.07) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence for the existence of anomalous triple gauge boson ZZZ and ZZ gamma couplings is found and limits on these couplings are set. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
We measure Bose-Einstein correlations between like-sign charged pion pairs in hadronic Z decays with the L3 detector at LEP. The analysis is performed in three dimensions in the longitudinal center-of-mass system. The pion source is found to be elongated along the thrust axis with a ratio of transverse to longitudinal radius of 0.81 +/- 0.02(-0.19)(+0.03). (C) 1999 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. The pair production of Z bosons is studied using the data collected by the L3 detector at LEP in 1998 in e+e- collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV. All the visible final states are considered and the cross section of this process is measured to be 0.74 +0.15 -0.14 (stat.) +/- 0.04 (syst.) pb. Final states containing b quarks are enhanced by a dedicated selection and their production cross section is found to be 0.18 +0.09 -0.07 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) pb. Both results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Limits on anomalous couplings between neutral gauge bosons are derived from these measurements.
New measurements at a centre-of-mass energy root s similar or equal to 183 GeV of the hadronic photon structure function F-2(gamma)(x) in the Q(2) interval, 9 GeV2 less than or equal to Q(2) less than or equal to 30 GeV2, are presented. The data, collected in 1997 with the L3 detector, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51.9 pb(-1). Combining with the data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 91 GeV, the evolution of F-2(gamma) With Q(2) is measured in the Q(2) range from 1.2 GeV2 to 30 GeV2. F-2(gamma) shows a linear growth with ln Q(2); the value of the slope alpha(-1)d F-2(gamma)(Q(2))/dlnQ(2) is measured in two x bins from 0.01 to 0.2 and is somewhat higher than predicted. A search for chargino and neutralino pair production in e(+)e(-) collisions at center-of-mass energies between 161 GeV and 183 GeV is performed under the assumptions that R-parity is not conserved and that only purely leptonic or hadronic R-parity violating decays are allowed. No signal is found in the data. Limits on the production cross sections, on the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model parameters and on the masses of the supersymmetric particles an derived. We report the result of a search for scalar leptons in e+e- collisions at 189 GeV centre-of-mass energy at LEP. No evidence for such particles is found in a data sample of 176 pb^{-1}. Improved upper limits are set on the production cross sections for these new particles. New exclusion contours in the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model are derived, as well as new lower limits on the masses of these supersymmetric particles. Under the assumptions of common gaugino and scalar masses at the GUT scale, we set an absolute lower limit on the mass of the lightest scalar electron of 65.5 GeV
We report on a search for the first generation heavy neutrino that is an isosinglet under the standard SU(2)_L gauge group. The data collected with the L3 detector at center-of-mass energies between 130 GeV and 208 GeV are used. The decay channel N_e -->eW is investigated and no evidence is found for a heavy neutrino, N_e, in a mass range between 80 GeV and 205 GeV. Upper limits on the mixing parameter between the heavy and light neutrino are derived.
