Low-level flight or maneuvering defines a flight phase that is particularly common and, in some cases, central to helicopter operations, but brings several safety concerns. At low altitude, helicopters are more susceptible to collisions with objects, while there is also limited time and space in which to perform an emergency landing. A total of 403 helicopter accidents in the low-level flight phase that occurred between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2022 in the US were analyzed for their most common causes and differentiated based on the type of flight operation to gain insight into low-level flight accidents. It is shown that, for low-level flights, the proportion of fatal accidents in flights conducted under Federal Aviation Regulations Part 91, General Aviation, is 30%, but in flights conducted under Part 137, aerial application or agricultural flights, only 12%. Logistic regression analysis shows that while controlling for other factors, the proportion of fatal accidents was significantly higher in Part 91 operations. Flight experience measured as total flight hours was not a significant factor for estimating fatality. It is recommended that low-level helicopter training includes low-altitude autorotations in simulators to optimize the mitigating effect of this emergency procedure in this flight phase with a specific focus on Part 91 operations.
Objectives Abrupt maneuvers are an event category with a proportion of fatal accidents that is higher than in the broader category of General Aviation flights while mostly taking place in favorable light and weather conditions. This study aims to analyze this event category with suggestions for possible mitigating strategies. Methods A total of 226 accidents reporting abrupt maneuvers were collected from the National Transportation Safety Board online database and coded type of aircraft, flight phases, instructional flights, and pilot characteristics. A Poisson regression model with the total flight hours as an offset was used to determine trends over time, while an ordinal logistic regression model with highest injury level as the response was applied to determine variables significantly associated with fatality. Results and recommendations The total number of fatal accidents shows a significant downward trend for fixed-wing airplanes but not for helicopters. The ordinal logistic regression model shows that helicopters, physical environment, and the presence of a student pilot are significantly associated with less fatality, with 83.3%, 71.8% and 77.1% reductions in the odds of being more fatal, respectively. Scenario-based training programs that focus on decision-making are likely to assist in mitigating the number of accidents with abrupt maneuvers but are advised to include scenarios in favorable light and weather conditions while also distinguishing between different categories of aircraft.
A paleographic analysis of a set of thirteen poems composed by Muyaka bin Haji (1776–1840) but written in Swahili-Arabic script by Mwalimu Sikujua in the 1890s reveals a consistent preference in the placement of script-specific diacritics and in the use of certain letterform combinations, but variation in the choice of graphic forms, particularly those for kāf . Sikujua places miniature consonant signs between a consonant letterform and a potential vowel diacritic. Since the miniature consonants are rendered in red, the scribe needs to alternate pens during the writing of the text or leave sufficient space if they are inserted later. Letterform combinations appear limited to those with either mīm, jīm , or yāʾ . This characteristic may contrast Sikujua’s handwriting with that of others. The paleographic consequences of these combinations mainly concern the placement of vowel diacritics, which are placed in relation to the consonant sign rather than the baseline of the overall text. Where miniature consonants and letterform combinations show a consistent placement of the Swahili-Arabic diacritics in this corpus, a third kāf graphic form adds variation. The kāf graphic forms are in free variation and accompanying vowel diacritics have varying placements. The third kāf graphic form is possibly unique to Sikujua who has also shown creative variations in spelling when using Arabic or Swahili-Arabic script for the Swahili language.
This book examines the dynamics around the introduction and spread of helmets and body armour throughout Egypt during the 18th, 19th and 20th Dynasties. It argues that the word ‘introduction’ is the best term to define this phenomenon because these types of military equipment were not in fact Egyptian technological innovations, but initially appeared at the end of the Bronze Age following the Hurrian expansion in the Middle East before being dispersed throughout the surrounding territories. The analysis focuses particularly on a survey of iconographic, archaeological and lexicographic attestations from a wide range of surviving material evidence and literary sources. On the basis of the collated data, it provides as accurate a perspective as possible on how the helmet and the cuirass were introduced and propagated, their impact on warfare and their possible role in ideology across the chronological span of the New Kingdom. Pollastrini also draws productive comparisons between the Egyptian data and contemporary attestations from the Middle East and the Aegean region in order to underpin the ‘international’ dynamics at play. In doing so it both encourages a broader ancient-historical perspective that sets New Kingdom Egypt within its contemporary context, and sheds new light on developments in the military history and warfare of the period.
Westerwanna are four-sided dice first produced among the Frisii people in the northern Netherlands and Germany during the late Iron Age and Imperial Roman period. We report analyses on a set of 27 Westerwanna and 15 oblong four-sided dice from this region to examine their cultural origin. While some attributes, such as Sevens configuration, conform strongly to patterns in Roman six-sided dice, others, such as pip orientation and layout, more closely resemble Celtic and Free Germania oblong dice. We argue in this article that Westerwanna dice reflect a blending of cultural information from different ancient cultures, resulting in a new form.
Muyaka's poetry as it is known today was first recorded in the 1890s, mainly written down by Mwalimu Sikujua who used Arabic script as well as an adapted Swahili -Arabic writing system to document the language. Sikujua's versatility when using the Arabic script as well as his use of variant spellings suggest a writing practice that embraces rather than avoids orthographic variation. His use of diacritics including the shadda and hamza is particularly noteworthy. Muyaka's poems with their frequent repetitions as well as the writing of the poet's name feature multiple spellings by Sikujua even when applying the adapted Swahili -Arabic script. Sikujua invented solutions that best approach a Swahili pronunciation but he also displays a detailed understanding and creative use of a wide range of Arabic signs and diacritics. The complexities of writing Swahili with Arabic script benefit from Sikujua's creativity. It is this versatility and creativity that has been largely ignored and misinterpreted as merely inconsistent in studies where standardization is considered preferable.
Safety in General Aviation has been a continuous concern. About 12% of all airplane accidents in General Aviation involve nose-overs and nose-down events. A total of 134 accidents reported by the National Transportation Safety Board that include nose-overs and nose-downs were analyzed for their main causes. It was found that 35% of the defining events involved a loss of control on the ground while 58% of the total dataset involved tailwheel-type aircraft. A relatively high proportion of aircraft built before 1950 were found, which are also aircraft that have tailwheel-type landing gear, and thereby a higher propensity for ground loops and nose-overs. It is shown that the high accident rate in General Aviation, especially for accidents that did not result in a fatality, was, to an important extent, explained by tailwheel and older aircraft in the US General Aviation airplane fleet struggling with controlling the aircraft on the ground. Attention to this group of aircraft in future studies may help to more effectively address the relatively high accident rates in General Aviation.
Abstract The Game of Cupid is a simple dice-based race game derived from the Game of the Goose in about 1600. Twelve different examples, covering the period to about 1850 and drawn from France, the Low Countries and Britain, are analysed according to distinctive markers that include rules, game board configuration and decorative elements, showing that the evolution of the game can be described by a single tree of descent. The forces governing this evolution are discussed. The results may be of interest to those investigating whether different aspects of a complex cultural trait – such as a board game that has rules, a board and decorative elements – follow separate cultural transmission processes.
Tsua is a critically-endangered language of the Eastern Kalahari Khoe languages where the historical processes of click replacement and click loss are relatively common. An acoustic analysis of Tsua’s remaining alveolar and palatal click consonants that have not undergone click loss reveals that on three statistical spectral moments — center of gravity, skew and kurtosis — the Tsua alveolar and palatal click bursts do not markedly differ from each other. T-tests reveal that the differences are not statistically significant. Moreover, the click burst duration and intensity differences are not statistically significant either. In contrast, an analysis of the alveolar and palatal clicks in Juǀ’hoan, which does not exhibit click loss, shows that these clicks are significantly different on all the acoustic measures. These findings may help shed light on the diachronic process of click loss in Tsua.
Technical failures in helicopters are a main concern for helicopter safety. The prominence of mechanical failures differs for specific helicopter operations. This analysis used 151 General Aviation accident reports from the National Transportation Safety Board online database from an 11-year time period. The information in each report was collated, including the list of findings for each accident. Possible relations between causes and specific flight operations were analyzed by looking at significant differences between expected and actual values within the dataset of categorical data. It is found that the proportion of fatal accidents in this category of accidents is low (16.6%) compared with the percentage of fatal helicopter accidents in general, as well as those of specific helicopter operations. Instructional flights appear significantly more likely to be associated with maintenance-related causes. Causes related to fatigue of aircraft parts are more often associated with ferry and positional flights, as well as helicopters with turbo-shaft engines. Future research is recommended for these specific associations to further mitigate the number of accidents with non-powerplant failures.
BACKGROUND: The geographical circumstances, such as mountains and ocean, and specific aviation operations, especially sightseeing, make the state of Hawaii stand out in aviation. These conditions support a regional approach to aviation accident analysis.METHODS:Accident reports of aviation accidents collected from the online National Transportation Safety Board database were used to study a 10-yr time period between 2008 and 2017.RESULTS: There was a significantly higher proportion of fatal accidents during night, dawn, and dusk (6 out of 13) than during daytime (13 out of 74). In addition, a significantly higher proportion of accidents occurred in diminished light conditions among fixed wing airplanes (11 out of 48) as opposed to other aircraft (2 out of 39), and among twin-engine aircraft (6 out of 12) as opposed to single-engine aircraft (7 out of 74). Out of seven weight-shift control aviation accidents, four were reported to be fatal; the latter all took place during instruction.DISCUSSION: Light conditions are the main environmental concern in Hawaiian aviation that particularly affect twin-engine fixed wing aircraft and warrant specific attention in advanced training exercises. Helicopter operations have not exhibited a diminished safety record since the 1990s, showing a lasting effect of a previous safety intervention. The |Xae|xae dialect of Ju|’hoan as it is spoken in western Botswana features a series of nasal clicks and glottalized clicks that are combined with a syllabic velar nasal into a single morphological unit. An acoustic analysis of these clicks shows that the vowel [a] is not present in the |Xae|xae variants and that only a syllabic velar nasal remains. This was found for all four click articulations with minimal pairs for high and low tone as well as for glottalized clicks and non-glottalized nasal clicks. While their phonetic features appear straightforward, the phonological and orthographic renderings of these clicks are discussed for their wider implications.
Causes and contributing factors of amphibious airplane accidents are examined by comparing the proportion of fatal accidents for different causes of accidents, with a focus on landings on water and low-level flying maneuvers. A set of 183 accidents involving amphibious planes from 2005 to 2020 was extracted from the National Transportation Safety Board’s online database. Amphibious airplane accidents are reported to be fatal in 34% of cases, which is higher than the average of 20% for general aviation. Logistic regression analysis shows that the maneuvering flight phase and decision-making factors are significantly more often associated with fatal accidents than other flight phases and causes. In addition, the number of accidents associated with decision-making factors significantly increased during the studied time period. Amphibious airplanes benefit from accident analysis despite the absence of denominator data and the limitations of most general aviation accident reports. Intentional low-level flying is shown to be a central area of concern that may be addressed at the operational as well as the training level. Landing accidents could be avoided by introducing additional warning systems and training regarding (retractable) landing gear as well as general awareness training of decision-making during landings on water.

Dialect clusters in Africa and specifically those of Khoisan languages are relatively underdocumented. !Xun can be described as a complex or a cluster of lects and the Ju|'hoan speakers of |Xae|xae, Botswana, are part of the (eastern) E1 dialect cluster of the !Xun language. Their closest neighbors in Tsum!kwe, Namibia, also speakers of Ju|'hoan, have been the subject of extensive linguistic study. A comparison based on lexical items affiliates speakers from |Xae|xae mainly with those from Tsum!kwe but with several exceptions. Additional comparisons between the Tsum!kwe and |Xae|xae speakers based on morphological markers show differences in plural markers and gender classes as well as differences in influences from neighboring languages. This study adds a specific variety to the description of the E1 dialect cluster that should encourage further research on Ju|'hoan as spoken in Botswana.
BACKGROUND: Accidents during start-up and shut-down procedures of aircraft can lead to fatalities or destroyed aircraft. Start-up procedures for propeller aircraft include the possibility of hand-propping, which may increase the occurrence of injuries from propeller strikes.METHODS: A set of 142 accidents from a 10-yr period were selected from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board online database. Only fixed-wing aircraft in the "standing" phase of flight were included in the dataset. The significance of differences was determined using Pearson's Chi-squared analysis.RESULTS: The severity of the injuries sustained in the accidents were inversely related to the amount of damage to the aircraft. Hand-propping without properly securing the aircraft was more likely to result in substantial damage to the aircraft. Pilots with less than a thousand hours of flight experience were significantly more likely to use an incorrect hand-propping procedure.CONCLUSIONS: It is recommended to make the advisory on hand-propping a regulatory article of the Federal Aviation Administration so that pilots' knowledge of this procedure is mandatory and part of their initial training, especially securing the aircraft during hand-propping. Highlighting throttle positions in both regular and hand-propping procedures may optimize checklist design and further mitigate accidents during start-up procedures.de Voogt AJ, Kalagher H, Burns S. A “loss of visual reference” is a term used by the National Transportation and Safety Board investigators to describe a situation in which the pilot has lost reference to the horizon or ground. Previous research has largely focused on the conditions that are often associated with a loss of visual reference (e.g., spatial disorientation) instead of the term itself. The purpose of the present study is to examine the accident and pilot characteristics that are associated with a loss of visual reference and the extent to which both are associated with fatalities. A total of 129 accident reports from 2008 through 2020 were extracted from the NTSB online database in which the term loss of visual reference appeared in the event category. Fatal accidents, which made up more than half of the dataset, were more likely to have occurred during the en-route phase of flight compared to all of the other phases of flight combined. The reports in which “decision making” or “decision making/judgment” was present were more likely to be for fatal accidents compared to reports in which the terms were not listed. It is the pilot’s decision and lack of attention that are most commonly associated with accidents in which a loss of visual reference occurred. Decisions that are likely to cause a loss of visual reference include initiating or continuing in adverse weather or light conditions. The dangers of loss of visual reference need to be part of ongoing training of pilots as opposed to their initial training only.
Roman-period six-sided dice are common in archaeological sites across Europe. While some dice approach true cubes, many are visibly non-cubic (i.e., asymmetric/lopsided) and favor certain rolls, especially the numbers 1 and 6. It is unclear if such dice were intentional and distinctive “types” used in specific games or activities, represent “cheaters” dice, or are simply part of a continuum of variation in die shape and configuration. To explore this issue, we examine shape distribution of 28 well-dated Roman-period dice from modern-day Netherlands. Results show that Roman die asymmetry varies in a continuous fashion from true cube to highly parallelepiped, where the long side is over 50% longer than the short side. We then conduct replication experiments to examine how naïve producers configure pips across a range of shapes. Our results show a production bias, where makers place the 6 on the largest die face, not to favor certain rolls, but due to space limitations and/or the order in which they place the pips. Overall, we interpret asymmetrical Roman dice as part of a single but highly variable artifact category, not distinct types. We argue that such extreme variation was acceptable because makers and users understood roll outcomes as the product of fate, rather than chance or probability. Conformity to a true symmetrical cube was not perceived as essential to die function, and asymmetrical forms were tolerated as simply part of the acceptable range in shape variation.
