PURPOSE:Anastomotic leakage following rectal cancer resection is a serious complication. Despite efforts to prevent it, the risk remains high. Obsidian®ASG, an AUTOLOGOUS fibrin matrix with thrombocytes derived from the patient's blood, shows promise but has not been thoroughly tested in rectal anastomosis. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of using Obsidian®ASG as a supplement in rectal anastomosis creation during minimally invasive rectal cancer resection. METHODS:This prospective IDEAL stage 2a development cohort study included 50 patients undergoing rectal cancer resection with anastomosis using minimally invasive surgery at Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark. Obsidian®ASG application was assessed using a predefined rating scale: "Complete" (applied in all three prescribed steps), "Almost complete" (applied in at least the first or second step), and "Incomplete" (all others). Feasibility required "Complete" or "Almost complete" application in at least 90% of patients. RESULTS:Obsidian®ASG application was "Complete" in 15 cases (30%) and "Almost complete" in 35 cases (70%), meeting feasibility criteria in all patients. No "Incomplete" applications occurred. Difficulties in achieving "Complete" application included anatomical constraints, material depletion, machine error, and time constraints. CONCLUSION:Obsidian®ASG was successfully applied in all patients undergoing minimally invasive rectal cancer surgery. These findings suggest its feasibility, but further large-scale, multi-center randomized trials are needed to fully assess its potential benefits for patient outcomes.
Partnerships between the public and researchers in participatory research projects are shifting towards co-creational models. Within archaeology, traditional projects involve the public through artefact treatment and data handling and entry. In the project discussed herein, we aimed to fully engage participants (high school students and teachers) in the research process using advanced scientific methods. We introduce a novel co-creational framework, which actively involved high school students in archaeological research. In the initial phase, we collaborated with local museums and high school teachers to integrate archaeological expertise with educational objectives in our participatory project setup. High school teachers facilitated curriculum connections, while museums contributed valuable materials and local archaeological insights. In the final study programme, students participated in hands-on laboratory work, using both a morphological approach and Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS) to analyse archaeological leather samples. Standardised protocols were adapted to match student capabilities while maintaining scientific validity. A total of 3,319 high school students handled 917 different archaeological objects and analysed 3,900 samples. Based on the highest quality result with 3–5 replicates for each object, we achieved taxonomic identifications for 95% of the objects. Evaluation of participating students’ outcomes showed strong engagement in the scientific process, demonstrating the value of co-creational partnerships in enhancing both research and educational outcomes. Our model fosters interdisciplinary thinking and scientific skills among students while establishing one of the largest archaeological datasets globally. The project’s cross-disciplinary approach and robust validation methods ensure high-quality data for future archaeological research, highlighting the powerful potential of public involvement in scientific endeavours. Moving forward, expanding the range of materials analysed could broaden participation and further enrich both research and educational experiences.
Knowledge of long-term outcomes following elective inguinal hernia mesh-repair in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains limited. Pathophysiological differences between Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) may influence mesh-related complications and recurrence risk. The primary objective was to assess the reoperation risk for mesh-related complications, and secondarily, recurrence after inguinal hernia mesh-repair in patients with CD and UC. The impact of fistulising disease (intra-abdominal/perianal) and surgical technique (open/laparoscopic) on both outcomes was also analysed based on the available data. This nationwide cohort study (2007–2016) followed IBD patients undergoing elective inguinal hernia mesh-repair to assess risks of reoperation for mesh-related complications or recurrence. Risks were estimated using cumulative incidence and Cox regression analyses. Among 1,072 patients with IBD (CD = 264, UC = 698, IBD-unclassified = 110), the five-year reoperation risk was 0.5
Hunting occupies a strong position in Denmark, and Danish hunters have delivered high quality data on their individual tally of bagged birds and mammals ever since it became mandatory to do so in 1941. The annual data on hunting yields of most species for more than 80 years serves to qualify the advice given by Danish wildlife biologists on hunting and wildlife management to the responsible authorities and other stakeholders. Due to overharvest or persecution many wildlife populations were heavily reduced or even driven to extinction during the last part of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Since then, improved legislation and management have resulted in many populations becoming re-established or increasing, and the total take by hunters increased to culminate in almost 4 million bagged mammals and birds per year around 1970. After 1970, the most distinctive pattern has been that total numbers of bagged animals has decreased, while yield in weight of the take has almost doubled over the 80-year span of data. This is because the take of smaller game has decreased due to protective measures, reduced farmland wildlife populations, and declining interest among hunters, while the take of larger species such as deer and geese has increased considerably following increasing populations resulting from improved management of hunting together with green fields in winter. The question remains as to what extent hunting and its associated disturbances and heightened shyness of wildlife keep quarry populations below the carrying capacity of the environment. This issue is particularly problematic in relation to the entire West Palearctic flyway populations of waterbirds, where lack of reliable annual bag statistics from most of the countries along the flyway prevents effective management. This challenge is further discussed in relation to societal changes in attitudes towards hunting and the future of such changes.
AIM:Recent evidence challenges the current standard of offering surgery to patients with ileocaecal Crohn's disease (CD) only when they present complications of the disease. The aim of this study was to compare short-term results of patients who underwent primary ileocaecal resection for either inflammatory (luminal disease, earlier in the disease course) or complicated phenotypes, hypothesizing that the latter would be associated with worse postoperative outcomes. METHOD:A retrospective, multicentre comparative analysis was performed including patients operated on for primary ileocaecal CD at 12 referral centres. Patients were divided into two groups according to indication of surgery for inflammatory (ICD) or complicated (CCD) phenotype. Short-term results were compared. RESULTS:A total of 2013 patients were included, with 291 (14.5%) in the ICD group. No differences were found between the groups in time from diagnosis to surgery. CCD patients had higher rates of low body mass index, anaemia (40.9% vs. 27%, p < 0.001) and low albumin (11.3% vs. 2.6%, p < 0.001). CCD patients had longer operations, lower rates of laparoscopic approach (84.3% vs. 93.1%, p = 0.001) and higher conversion rates (9.3% vs. 1.9%, p < 0.001). CCD patients had a longer hospital stay and higher postoperative complication rates (26.1% vs. 21.3%, p = 0.083). Anastomotic leakage and reoperations were also more frequent in this group. More patients in the CCD group required an extended bowel resection (14.1% vs. 8.3%, p: 0.017). In multivariate analysis, CCD was associated with prolonged surgery (OR 3.44, p = 0.001) and the requirement for multiple intraoperative procedures (OR 8.39, p = 0.030). CONCLUSION:Indication for surgery in patients who present with an inflammatory phenotype of CD was associated with better outcomes compared with patients operated on for complications of the disease. There was no difference between groups in time from diagnosis to surgery.
To study the effect of laparoscopic ileopexy in patients with afferent-loop syndrome (ALS) after restorative proctocolectomy (RP). Ileopexy has been the treatment of choice in patients with ALS for the last 5 years at our department. All patients who had undergone ileopexy for ALS between January 2019 and August 2023 were identified. Data were extracted from the medical records. All patients were contacted and asked standardized questions regarding symptoms of ALS. A symptom score was calculated and compared before surgery and at the last follow-up. Tardigrade taxonomy is undergoing a turbulent phase of reclassifying various species that have previously been gathered within large wastebasket genera, such as Diphascon or Hypsibius. The application of genetic sequencing, paired with detailed analysis of fine morphological features in 3D using scanning electron microscopy, allow for revealing new phenotypic characters used in systematics. At the same time, resampling of previously well-sampled regions, such as the Western Palaearctic, delivers fresh and precious data. In this paper, the second from a series of publications integratively addressing the tardigrade fauna of Denmark, we focus on Hypsibius scabropygus and related species, which appeared to be common and abundant in cryptogam samples. As previously suggested by scarce molecular and morphological evidence, Hypsibius scabropygus is considerably different from other representatives of the genus Hypsibius by the presence of ramazzottiid characters. These include Ramazzottius-like claws with thinned, and thus more flexible, primary branches of external/posterior claws, apophyses for the insertion of the stylet muscles asymmetrical with respect to the frontal plane, rudimentary elliptical sensory organs, buccal tube slightly bent in posterior portion, and, finally, eggs with distinct chorion granulation laid in exuviae (known for some hypsibiids and acutuncids), and not smooth, which is otherwise typical for most hypsibiids. Consequently, the group of Hypsibius species with two small granular macroplacoids in the pharynx and pronounced cuticular sculpturing in the form of dorsoposterior protuberances or whole-dorsal tubercles is erected as Parahypsibius gen. nov. New DNA barcodes strongly support the monophyly of Hypsibiidae and recent changes in the classification of Pilatobiinae. We argue that some still poorly resolved nodes in the hypsibiid tree are the result of incomplete representation of particularly uncommon evolutionary lineages. Our abundant cryptogam samples from across Denmark demonstrate the value of involving local communities and utilizing citizen science in biodiversity monitoring and documentation.
Most migratory birds return every year to the same breeding sites and some species show a similarly high fidelity to wintering grounds as well. Fidelity to stopover sites during migration has been much less studied and is usually found to be lower. Here, we investigate site fidelity and distance to previously visited sites throughout the annual cycle in the common cuckoo, a nocturnal trans‐Saharan migrant, based on satellite‐tracking data from repeated annual migrations of thirteen adult males. All birds (100%) returned to the same breeding grounds, with a median shortest distance of only 1 km from the locations in previous year. This was in strong contrast to a much lower and much less precise site fidelity at non‐breeding sites during the annual cycle: In only 18% of the possible cases in all non‐breeding regions combined, did the cuckoos return to within 50 km of a previously visited non‐breeding site, with no significant differences among the main staging regions (Europe in autumn, Sahel in autumn, wintering in Central Africa, West Africa in spring, Europe in spring). The shortest distance to a previously visited non‐breeding site differed among the staging regions with median shortest distances for the longest stopovers of 131 km [2;1223] (median [min;max]) in Europe, 207 km [1;2222] in Sahel in autumn and 110 km [0;628] in Central Africa. The distance to a previously visited staging site decreased with the time spent at the stopover in a previous year. Understanding the drivers of recurrence and site selection in migratory birds are important for guiding conservation efforts in this group but further studies are needed to establish whether the patterns observed in cuckoos are general among terrestrial migrants with continuous distribution of habitat.
The early life movement patterns of long-lived, large raptors, such as the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), remain largely unexplored. In this study, we have tracked 22 individuals of white-tailed eagles hatched in Denmark to investigate key parameters, including survival rates, causes of death, nest site fidelity, geographical distribution, and dispersal behaviors. Our analyses are based on approximately 340,000 GPS/GSM telemetry positions from the 22 individuals. We found that survival rates were lower in the first year of life, especially among females, but increased in subsequent years. The primary causes of death were wind turbine collisions and avian influenza. Movement analyses revealed that juvenile eagles frequented nest sites in August and September, with females showing earlier exploratory flights and dispersal. Both males and females spent most of their first calendar year near their nest sites. In the second calendar year, a significant proportion of their time was spent at well-known white-tailed eagle resting areas in Denmark, as well as visiting neighboring countries. Notably, one individual set a new distance record for a Danish GPS-tagged white-tailed eagle, venturing at least 1750 km away from its nest site to visit Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Norway. Our results, indicating that juvenile white-tailed eagles continue to utilize nest sites into September, suggest an extension of the recommended time period for nest protection zones provided by BirdLife Denmark (DOF).
Little is known regarding the migration routes of Siberian songbird populations. Here we provide the first geolocator tracking data for an Arctic Warbler breeding in Central Siberia and compare its movements with eight long-distance ring recoveries of this species. In autumn, the tracked individual migrated eastward to a stopover site in eastern Siberia, before migrating southward through Taiwan to its non-breeding sites in the Philippines and Indonesia. During spring migration, the bird spent at least one month at stopover sites in Mongolia, before migrating to its breeding site in June. Ring recovery data confirmed the movement between the Central Siberian breeding grounds and stopover sites in northern Mongolia.
ABSTRACTAimOngoing climate changes represent a major determinant of demographic processes in many organisms worldwide. Birds, and especially long‐distance migrants, are particularly sensitive to such changes. To better understand these impacts on long‐distance migrants' breeding productivity, we tested three hypotheses focused on (i) the shape of the relationships with different climate variables, including previously rarely tested quadratic responses, and on regional differences in these relationships predicted by (ii) mean climatic conditions and (iii) by the rate of climate change in respective regions ranging from Spain to Finland.LocationEurope.Time Period2004–2021.Major Taxa StudiedLong‐distance migratory passerine birds.MethodsWe calculated breeding productivity from constant effort ringing sites from 11 European countries covering 34° of latitude, and extracted temperature‐ and precipitation‐related climate variables from E‐OBS and NASA MODIS datasets. To test our hypotheses, we fitted GLMM and Bayesian meta‐analytic models.ResultsWe revealed hump‐shaped responses of productivity to temperature, growing degree‐days, green‐up onset date, and precipitation anomaly, and negative responses to intense and prolonged rains across the regions. The effects of March temperature and April growing degree‐days were more negative in cold than in warm regions, except for the region with the highest accumulated heat, whereas increasing June precipitation anomalies were associated with higher productivity in both dry and wet regions. Productivity responses to climate were unrelated to the rate of climate warming.Main ConclusionsThe influence of climate on bird productivity proved to be frequently nonlinear, as expected by ecological theory. The rate of climate change is less important than regional interannual variability in climate (which is predicted to increase), but this may change with the progression of climate change in the future. Productivity declines in long‐distance migratory songbirds are particularly expected if out‐of‐norm water excess increases in frequency or strength.
Anthropogenic land cover change is a major driver of biodiversity loss, with urbanisation and farmland practices responsible for some of the most drastic modifications of natural habitats. The relative importance of different land covers for shaping insect communities, however, is unclear. This study examines the effect of urban and farmland covers, along with land cover heterogeneity, at a landscape scale on species richness, evenness and biomass of flying insects using citizen science carnet sampling across Denmark. Increasing urban cover had a negative effect on insect richness but an even stronger negative effect on biomass. Increased land cover heterogeneity did not mitigate the negative effect of urban cover. Insect assemblages also became more even with increased urban cover. Farmland cover had no significant effect on insect richness, evenness or biomass. Based on our findings, the urban cover has a strong negative impact on insect communities, indicating that urbanisation could contribute to insect declines. Moreover, our findings indicate that insect loss occurs more through loss of biomass than loss of species, which may affect the ecosystem‐level consequences of urbanisation.
Citizen science involves non-professionals assisting with scientific research, contributing data, and conducting experiments under professional guidance. In this paper, we describe the citizen science project DNA & life, based at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, which actively engages high school students in both fieldwork and advanced laboratory analyses by collecting and analyzing eDNA samples from marine environments across Denmark. The analysis is performed via species-specific real-time PCR and in a case study we present data gathered in the project from 2017-2023 with focus on the potential of eDNA detecting in use for species monitoring. The results include seasonal occurrence of Mnemiopsis leidyi and national distributions of selected species of particular ecological interest Perca fluviatilis, Anguilla anguilla, Neogobius melanostomus and Alexandrium ostenfeldii. In addition to the eDNA case study, we present a new way of conducting citizen science and eDNA analysis, as a development of the established DNA & life project. Local DNA laboratories are created to shorten the path from sampling site to laboratory facility, creating the possibility for Danish high schools to participate in a new version of the project. In close collaboration with the academic staff of the DNA & life project both teachers and students help develop facilities, protocols and laboratory analyses in an extreme citizen science and co-creation approach, where the participants are involved in a higher level of laboratory work and data analysis. Allowing high school students to perform intricate molecular lab analyzes through an extreme citizen science approach has demonstrated encouraging outcomes and potential for data of high quality in terms of sampling and analyzing eDNA with the purpose of species monitoring and conservation.
The incidence of colon diverticulosis and diverticulitis is increasing. This review summarises the current classification and treatment options. Antibiotic treatment is not indicated for uncomplicated diverticulitis in non-immunosuppressed patients. We discuss whether laparoscopic lavage is the best treatment for every patient with Hinchey III diverticulitis. For selected patients with Hinchey III diverticulitis, segmental resection with primary anastomosis may be the optimal surgical treatment. The indication for elective resection in diverticulitis should respect individual patient-related factors such as comorbidities and the impact on quality of life.
Tardigrade diversity and distribution are enigmatic in most parts of the globe, and only some European countries can boast of a relatively well-studied water bear fauna. However, even these suffer from the lack of genetic data, which would substantiate faunistic data and make biogeographic comparisons easier. Denmark has never been intensively and systematically researched in this regard, thus a citizen science sampling of cryptogams (mosses, liverworts, and lichens) was launched in spring 2023, aiming at a comprehensive biodiversity survey across this insular country. Nearly 700 samples were selected out of 8.000 sent to NHMD, based on the quality of samples, representativeness of various regions of Denmark, and the type of substrate to allow unravelling of potential ecological associations between tardigrades and cryptogams. Importantly, a large fraction of morphological identifications was backed up by DNA barcode data based on ITS-2 (1001 sequences), and in some cases also on COI (93 sequences) and ITS-1 (22 sequences) molecular markers, which are recognised DNA fragments used in species delimitation. We quadruple the number of known Danish limno-terrestrial tardigrade species (55 spp. reported in this paper vs. 14 spp. reported in literature so far, most of which were contentious due to the insufficient knowledge on tardigrade taxonomy), demonstrating the power of integrative taxonomy. No fewer than nine spp. are new to science. This is the first case where tardigrade fauna of an entire country is examined both from morphological and DNA barcoding data perspective.
Using archived feathers from Norwegian, Swedish, and Greenlandic white-tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), we investigated long-term (1866-2015) spatiotemporal trends of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their methoxylated analogues (MeO-PBDEs). Concentrations of BDE 47 (constituting 47-65% of & sum;PBDEs) were significantly increased in feathers from Sweden, while those of other congeners remained at similar levels between Sweden and Norway. Among the naturally occurring MeO-PBDEs, 6-MeO-BDE 47 exhibited higher levels in Sweden while 2 '-MeO-BDE 68 concentrations were similar across regions. Concentrations of BDE 47 and 6-MeO-BDE 47 were not intercorrelated in Swedish eagles, highlighting the significance of anthropogenic input and natural origin, respectively, possibly associated with enhanced primary production in the Baltic region. Such a natural origin was further supported by the presence of MeO-PBDEs in 35 historical feathers originally collected from 1866 to 1957. Furthermore, in eagles from Norway and Sweden, less brominated PBDEs exhibited significantly increasing trends until the 1990s that declined considerably thereafter, whereas no apparent decrease was observed for BDE 153 or 154. By comparison, all PBDE congeners showed nonlinear but insignificant changes in Greenland. Additionally, the Swedish eagles showed significantly increased levels of & sum;MeO-PBDEs, primarily driven by 6-MeO-BDE 47. Our findings indicate that further evaluation of the sources and impacts of more highly brominated PBDEs and MeO-PBDEs is warranted.
CapsuleMortality varies across capture methods but remains overall low.AimsTo investigate mortality associated with ringing operations in Denmark and the Faroe Islands, including the effects of species and capture methods.MethodsWe analyzed data for mortality rates of birds arising from ringing operations in Denmark and the Faroe Islands over a 20-year period. The data included a variety of capture methods and altogether the reports involve 1.8 million individuals.ResultsThe overall mortality rate during ringing operations was 0.16%. The dominant form of capture, mist-netting, had a mortality rate of 0.21%, comparable to similar published studies. Capture methods with higher mortality rates were generally used in research aimed at informing management decisions. Predation was directly responsible for most deaths, with the Eurasian Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus being the most common predator of birds captured in nets. Migrating passerines occurring in large numbers at bird observatories contributed most to the mortality rates in Denmark, with young birds on their first autumn migration being especially prevalent.ConclusionsOverall, our study confirms that bird ringing remains an acceptable method of data collection and highlights the variation in mortality among species and methods. The results should be used to inform working practices to minimize any associated mortality, as far as possible.
Aim: A laparoscopic approach to total colectomy (TC) for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is being increasingly used, but data on its comparative benefits over open TC are conflicting. The aim of this study was to examine 90-day outcomes following laparoscopic and open TC for IBD in a nationwide cohort after the introduction of laparoscopy.Method: IBD patients undergoing TC in Denmark from 2005 to 2017 were identified from the Danish National Patient Registry. We used Kaplan-Meier methodology to estimate mortality and Cox regression analysis to estimate adjusted mortality rate ratios (aMRRs) and adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of reoperation, readmission and intensive care unit (ICU) transfer, comparing patients undergoing laparoscopic versus open TC.Results: We identified 1095 patients undergoing laparoscopic TC and 1523 patients undergoing open TC. Following emergency TC, 90-day mortality was 2.8% (1.6%-4.9%) after laparoscopic TC and 9.1% (7.0%-11.8%) after open TC. Ninety-day mortality was 0.9% (0.3%-2.5%) after laparoscopic TC and 2.6% (1.5%-4.3%) after open elective TC. The aMRRs associated with laparoscopic TC were 0.45 (95% CI 0.25-0.80) in emergency cases and 0.29 (95% CI 0.10-0.86) in elective cases. Risks of readmission were comparable following laparoscopic versus open TC, both in emergency [aHR = 0.93 (95% CI 0.76-1.15)] and elective [aHR = 0.83 (95% CI 0.68-1.02)] cases, while risks of ICU transfer and reoperation were lower following laparoscopic TC, both in emergency cases [aHR = 0.53 (95% CI 0.35-0.82) and aHR = 0.26 (95% CI 0.15-0.47)] and elective [aHR = 0.58 (95% CI 0.35-0.95) and aHR = 0.37 (95% CI 0.21-0.66)] cases.Conclusion: The introduction of laparoscopic TC for IBD in Denmark was not associated with increased mortality or morbidity. In fact, laparoscopic TC for IBD may be associated with lower short-term mortality and morbidity compared with open TC.
BACKGROUND:Surgical management for patients with inflammatory ileocecal Crohn's disease (CD) could be a reasonable alternative to second-line medical treatment. AIM:To assess short and long-term outcomes of patients operated on for inflammatory, ileocecal Crohn's disease. METHODS:A retrospective analysis of patients intervened at four referral hospitals during 2012-2021 was performed. RESULTS:211 patients were included. 43% of patients underwent surgery more than 5 years after diagnosis, and 49% had been exposed to at least one biologic agent preoperatively. 89% were operated by laparoscopy, with 1.6% conversion rate. The median length of the resected bowel was 25 cm (7-92) and three patients (1.43%) received a stoma. Median follow-up was 36 (17-70) months. The endoscopic recurrence-free survival proportion at 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 months was 56%, 52%, 45%, 38%, and 33%, respectively. The clinical recurrence-free survival proportion at 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 months was 83%, 79%, 76%, 74%, and 74%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, previous biological treatment (HR=2.01; p = 0.001) was associated with a higher risk of overall recurrence. CONCLUSION:Surgery in patients with primary inflammatory ileocecal CD is associated with good postoperative outcomes, low postoperative morbidity with reasonable recurrence rates.
Many species of amphibians in Northern Europe are threatened and the local distributions are rarely described in detail. Application of modern molecular methods provides an important supplementary tool for monitoring the distribution and diversity of amphibians. For this purpose, we designed, tested, validated, and optimized 14 species-specific assays on genomic DNA extracted from tissue samples to use for quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) setups targeting mitochondrial DNA from amphibians in freshwater samples. The tests confirmed species specificity for all assays. Considering a systematic definition of the limit of detection for each of the assays, the presented qPCR assays are unlikely to return false positive detection from any co-occurring species in northern Europe. For field validation, the qPCR assays were applied in a large-scale nationwide citizen science project in which sampling and qPCR analysis was carried out by high school students. Data from the citizen science project returned the expected results when compared to the known regional distribution of the target species and confirmed the presence of nine out of 14 Danish species of amphibians in the collected freshwater samples. Four out of 2550 qPCR test sets carried out by the high school students required a professional reanalysis in multiple replicates due to initial unexpected results. This emphasizes that efforts from citizen science may generate large amounts of valuable data, as long as the results are carefully scrutinized by experts.
