Unlike most criminal offenses in Germany, the rate of residential burglary has significantly increased since 2006. This high number of burglary cases is contrary to a very low rate of suspects actually identified by the police. However, official statistics indicate that individual districts in Germany strongly differ regarding the frequency rate as well as the number of suspects. Hereby, the Criminology Research Institute of Lower Saxony conducted a comprehensive study on residential burglary regarding the characteristics of burglary offenses, the situation of victims, criminal investigations and legal proceedings, as well as the characteristics of offenders. Written surveys were completed with victims of burglary (N=1,329) and criminal files were analyzed (N=3,668). The present paper represents the main results of this research project.
IntroductionBinge Drinking is a constant problem behaviour in adolescents across Europe. However, epidemiological data on alcohol consumption of adolescents with different migration backgrounds are rare.Objective/aimsCreate insight on alcohol consumption patterns in adolescents with different migration backgrounds living in Germany.MethodsIn the years 2007/2008, a representative written survey of N = 44,610 students in the 9th grade of different school types in Germany was carried out (net sample). The return rate of questionnaires was 88% regarding all students whose teachers respectively school directors had agreed to participate in the study. 27.4% of the adolescents surveyed have a migration background whereby the Turkish culture is the largest group followed by adolescents who emigrated from former Soviet Union states.ResultsMore than half (57.4%) of the German 9th-graders engaged in binge drinking at least once during the 4 weeks prior to the survey. Students with migration background of the former Soviet Union showed mainly similar drinking behaviour like German adolescents (56.2%). Adolescents with Turkish roots engaged in binge drinking less frequently than adolescents of German descent (23.6%). However, in those adolescents who consumed alcohol in the last 4 weeks, binge drinking is very prominent across cultural backgrounds.ConclusionsCommon expectations concerning drinking behaviour of adolescents of certain cultural backgrounds (‘migrants with Russian background drink more’/‘migrants from Islamic imprinted countries drink less’) are only partly affirmed. Possibly, the degree of acculturation to the permissive German alcohol culture plays a role here.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health supports leading scientists in many countries, recognizing that global cooperation accelerates discovery and more efficiently brings the benefits of health research to individuals throughout the world. By fostering collaborative relationships between foreign health scientists and US researchers, NIH is participating in the creation of a human network of scientific excellence that will contribute solutions to the major human health challenges the world faces in the 21st century. One of those challenges is that of alcohol abuse and addiction. According to the latest Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health (World Health Organization, 2011), alcohol consumption is the third leading risk factor for disease and disability throughout the world, and the first for middle income countries. Additionally, alcohol is implicated in more than 200 diseases and is a direct causal factor in 60 types of diseases and injury. Worldwide, almost 4% of deaths are attributed to alcohol (more than HIV/AIDS, violence or tuberculosis). The US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has an active international collaborative research program that includes the direct funding of foreign investigators, funding collaborative projects between USA and foreign investigators, support of international scientific conferences, training of international fellows and development of international research initiatives. This presentation will summarize NIAAAs current international involvement (with a focus on partners in Europe), provide details of funding mechanisms available to European investigators and propose an agenda for USA–European collaboration to advance alcohol research in the developing world.
Deviant behavior in adolescence is of great public interest. In this article, four kinds of causes of deviance are investigated: violent behavior, relational aggression, drug use and xenophobia. Six hypotheses are derivated out of social science discourse and tested empirically on the basis of a dataset of 443 adolescents. Results show that values of self-enhancement, an integration in deviant peer groups, and a lack of self-control are strong v linked to deviant behavior. The other three variables (absolute deprivation, familial monitoring, anomic worldviews) are also useful insofar as they help to explain the more proximal factors. From the results, it is concluded that an integrative perspective on deviance is necessary. Different causes and different behaviors (as well as attitudes) should be discussed simultaneously in the same paradigm. In conclusion, some ideas about future research strategies are presented.
The article elaborates on the question whether the Eastern European enlargement of the European Union is liable to mobilize ethnocentric attitudes in Germany. It is the expectation that rapid social change as caused by the enlargement will be perceived as a threat by the individual. Recent theories of prejudice postulate that feelings of threat are an important predictor of discrimination. But not every individual tends to feel threatened in times of rapid social change. Thus, the integration of threat theory with the assumptions of the authoritarianism approach and the theory of disintegration is proposed to explain interindividual difference. The resulting theoretical model is tested empirically based on a representative German survey study (N = 1008) conducted in the early Summer of 2003. Results show that under certain conditions EU enlargement may indeed mobilize ethnocentric attitudes. This is especially true for individuals with an authoritarian personality disposition. Only in East Germany does economic threat on the personal level additionally predict a devaluation of outgroups.
