Compacted clays are used in the construction of embankments, dam cores, and landfill sealings. Dynamic stiffness and damping, dependent on the confining stress and shearing strain amplitude, are required in the seismic analysis of such geotechnical structures. A series of multi-stage tests were conducted in a conventional fixed-free resonant column device to determine these material properties for four clays. A compaction state corresponding to optimum water content at Proctor density was used as a reference. The water content was subsequently modified to reproduce a 3 % drop in density. Soil-water characteristic curves were obtained using different techniques depending on the suction level. The clays were tested to assess the effect of the consistency state on the dynamic soil properties over wide strain ranges at different confining stresses. Besides the shear modulus, the small-strain Young's modulus was measured in the flexural vibration mode. The effects of suction on the small-strain shear modulus are discussed. Design equations in terms of total stresses are provided for use in practice.
Permeability tests on unsaturated frozen sand and gravelIn artificial ground freezing applications, frozen saturated soil is assumed to be practically impervious. However, in the case of partial initial saturation, this is no longer the case. As part of a pilot study, permeability tests were carried out in the laboratory on cohesionless, loose, partially saturated, frozen soil samples. Mineral oil was used as the flow medium. Since no standardized apparatus exists, suitable experimental techniques and evaluation procedures had to be developed. The permeability of unfrozen, fully saturated soil was also determined for reference. Due to the loose packing and the low degree of saturation, the partially saturated soils exhibited a significant permeability, which is in the same order as the value of the corresponding water-saturated, unfrozen soils.
Numerical analysis of soil vibrations due to vibrating foundations: Guidance for model design Geotechnical engineers are increasingly concerned with wave propagation problems. Manufacturers of geotechnical analysis software added features for soil dynamic analyses to their products initially devised for static geotechnical analyses. Though, users often lack the experience for conducting such advanced numerical analyses. Working groups 1.4 “Soil dynamics” and 1.6 “Numerical analyses in geotechnical engineering” of DGGT German Society for Geotechnical Engineering established a joint subgroup “Numerical analyses in soil dynamics” to address this shortcoming. The present paper presents the work of the subgroup so far and provides some guidance on conducting numerical analyses in soil dynamics.
Using the finite-element method (FEM), this study presents results on piled foundations excited by a stationary or moving harmonic vertical point load acting on the soil surface at a given distance. For the stationary loading case, typical configurations of pile groups and corresponding piled rafts are examined in the frequency domain. The contribution of the raft alone in the overall response is also explored. The soil is modelled as a linear-elastic continuum with hysteretic damping. A wide range of frequencies from 8 to 64 Hz is considered. Of interest is the resulting vertical oscillation mode. The influence of the number of pile rows in the direction of wave propagation on the resulting vibration reduction is assessed by monitoring a reference pile at the furthest back pile row and an observation point at the free-field behind. The associated wave-passage effect is quantified through appropriate transfer functions for the piles. Subsequently, the case of a harmonic load travelling with a constant speed parallel to the pile group is investigated. Most importantly, it is revealed that a good approximation for this case is a stationary load located on the moving load path at the shortest distance from the pile group. This has important implications in the vibration protection practice, as detailed modelling of moving loads is then not required. The methodology presented can be extended to arbitrary foundation geometries and layered soil profiles.

Partial saturation leads to a significant decrease in the short- and long-term strength of frozen sands and gravels so that the stability of the frost body can be impaired in artificial ground freezing applications. Uniaxial and triaxial compression tests with on-unit cooling were performed on sand to determine uniaxial compressive strength, creep resistance and shear parameters. The results confirm and complete the findings from the few previous studies. Investigations on undisturbed specimens of medium and high plasticity clay using the same testing technique illustrate the influence of the consistency limits and the increase in short- and long-term strength at lower temperatures.
The paper investigates the deformation behaviour of partially saturated clay beams under flexural stress. Beams were prepared from two clays and then loaded until failure. Three degrees of saturation and two loading rates were examined for each clay. The load, the matric suction at different beam points, and deflection in the middle of the beam were measured during the tests. The loading device ensures an even distribution of stresses on the top surface of the beam, which was confirmed by employing tactile pressure matrix sensors placed between the loading device and the beam. In addition to the tests at room temperature, tests at 55 °C were carried out in a walk-in climate chamber to assess the effects of temperature. The papersummarises the testing procedure and presents selected experimental results.

The InSight lander carried an Instrument Deployment System (IDS) that included an Instrument Deployment Arm (IDA), scoop, five finger “claw” grapple, forearm-mounted Instrument Deployment Camera (IDC) requiring arm motion to image a target, and lander-mounted Instrument Context Camera (ICC), designed to image the workspace, and to place the instruments onto the surface. As originally proposed, the IDS included a previously built arm and flight spare black and white cameras and had no science objectives or requirements, or expectation to be used after instrument deployment (90 sols). During project development the detectors were upgraded to color, and it was recognized that the arm could be used to carry out a wide variety of activities that would enable both geology and physical properties investigations. During surface operations for two martian years, the IDA was used during major campaigns to image the surface around the lander, to deploy the instruments, to assist the mole in penetrating beneath the surface, to bury a portion of the seismometer tether, to clean dust from the solar arrays to increase power, and to conduct a surface geology investigation including soil mechanics and physical properties experiments. No other surface mission has engaged in such a sustained and varied campaign of arm and scoop activities directed at such a diverse suite of objectives. Images close to the surface and continuous meteorology measurements provided important constraints on the threshold friction wind speed needed to initiate aeolian saltation and surface creep. The IDA was used extensively for almost 22 months to assist the mole in penetrating into the subsurface. Soil was scraped into piles and dumped onto the seismometer tether six times in an attempt to bury the tether and ∼30% was entrained in the wind and dispersed downwind 1-2 m, darkening the surface. Seven solar array cleaning experiments were conducted by dumping scoops of soil from 35 cm above the lander deck during periods of high wind that dispersed the sand onto the panels that kicked dust off of the panels into suspension in the atmosphere, thereby increasing the power by ∼15
Introduction: The NASA InSight lander [1] has been operating on Mars since November 26, 2018. InSight is equipped with a four degree-of-freedom robotic arm, two color cameras (one mounted on the robotic arm and one mounted on the lander), and several science instruments. The robotic arm end-effector includes a scoop which is used to interact with surface material. Background: Observations at the InSight landing site suggest a subsurface geological structure consisting of dust (microns), over unconsolidated sand (~1 cm), underlain by duricrust (7-20 cm), with a fined grained regolith layer of unconsolidated sand and sparse rocks underneath [2,3]. Images of the pits that formed beneath the lander during touchdown and around the mole (part of the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package, HP3) during hammering show steep walls (Figure 1). The pit slope angles are much greater than the angle of repose and nearly vertical in the case of the HP3 mole pit, which implies that the material has some cohesion. Stability analysis based solely on the slope angle of the pits excavated by the retrorockets beneath the lander yield a minimum cohesion > 0.02 kPa, as reported in [2]. Soil mechanics experiments aiming at characterizing the cohesion and internal friction angle have been previously conducted on Mars. Of particular interest are the investigations performed by the Viking and Phoenix lander robotic arms [4,5]. At the InSight landing site, the pit that formed around the HP3 mole offers a unique opportunity to combine slope stability analysis with measurements of robotic arm forces at the end-effector and images to estimate the mechanical properties of the martian soil.
Numerical investigations on the shielding efficiency of single piles and pile groups in the wave field of a stationary or moving harmonic load This article presents results from finite-element analyses on the kinematic interaction of single piles and pile groups. The focus lies on the assessment of the resulting transfer functions due to an excitation with a stationary or moving harmonic vertical point load. A moving constant load is also considered. The soil is modelled as a linear viscoelastic continuum, and further distinguished between a half-space and a stratum on rigid base. The finite-element model has been optimised with respect to its size and the fineness of the discretization. The achieved accuracy is assessed on the basis of comparisons with exact solutions for the near- and the far-field. A frequency range between 20 and 40 Hz is examined. The results on the vertical response show that the vibrations of the pile head are considerably smaller than those of the free-field and that this reduction is more pronounced at higher frequencies. The connection of the piles through a rigid massless cap leads to an additional reduction of the vibration level in the pile group. In the case of a moving load, the shielding efficiency, as indicated by the emanating shadow zones, becomes stronger as the load passes by at minimum distance.
This paper deals with the stress-controlled cyclic triaxial response of saturated sand rubber chips (RC) mixtures at different gravimetric contents. Three types of sand were utilised, namely, uniform medium and coarse sands, as well as a combination of the two at two relative densities. A series of consolidated undrained and drained single-stage cyclic triaxial tests was performed using standard equipment to evaluate the development of the accumulated excess pore-water pressures, permanent axial and volumetric strains. Samples were anisotropically consolidated prior to cyclic loading. The results showed that for all sands adding 10% RC increases the liquefaction potential. Compared to pure sand, increasing the chips content beyond 20–30% generally yields an improvement as long as the sand is not too coarse. Expressions have been derived for the evolution of accumulated pore-water pressure and the relation between excess pore-water pressure from the undrained test and cumulative volumetric strain from drained tests. Although the findings were derived for a single set of loads, they reveal the basic characteristics of the cyclic composite material behaviour.
For the calculation of the earth pressure coefficient at rest, the empirical approximation formula by Jaky is established for horizontal ground surface under soil self-weight and without any pre-loading. In a more recent work, Goldscheider found, based on theoretical investigations and high-precision rectilinear extension tests on sand with proportional stress and deformation paths, that the proposal by Jaky yields consistently lower values The question arises as to the effects on the verification of stability and serviceability. The article reports on the results of the discussions in the Working Group for Excavations and in the committee responsible for DIN 4085, and presents an approach that describes Goldscheider's results more precisely than Jaky's approach.
