‘Lenetah’ (Reg. No. CV‐338, PI 652440) two‐rowed spring feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was developed by the Agricultural Research Service, Aberdeen, ID, in cooperation with the Idaho Agricultural Experimental Station and released in December 2007. Lenetah was selected from the cross 94Ab12981/91Ab3148. 94Ab12981 has the pedigree 85Ab2323/‘Camas’. 85Ab2323 has the pedigree 79Ab19042/‘Crystal’. 79Ab19042 is a selection from the cross ‘Klages’/‘Hector’. Camas is a selection from the cross ND5976/ND7159. ND5976 has the pedigree ‘Maris Concord’/Klages//ND2679‐4 and ND7159 has the pedigree Klages/ND1244/3/ND2685/ND1156//Hector. 91Ab3148 has the pedigree ‘Gallatin’/‘Targhee’//‘Bowman’. Lenetah was selected as an F5:6 line in 2001 and given the experimental designation 01Ab11107. It was released due to its superior yield and test weight compared to ‘Baronesse’, the most widely grown feed barley in Idaho and Montana. The yield advantage over Baronesse is especially pronounced in northern Idaho and eastern Washington and under dryland conditions.

The existence of genetic variation in wheat for tolerance to high temperature stress has been reported but cultivars released for a particular production system often are not characterized. The objective of this study was to identify and describe the characteristics of wheat cultivars adapted to production systems with risks of high temperature during the post-heading period. Fifteen diverse wheat cultivars and one unreleased genotype were evaluated at the Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Uvalde, TX, during two seasons characterized by daily maximum temperatures as high as 36 degrees C. Measurements during both seasons included days to heading, days to physiological maturity and grain yield. Large and significant (P < 0.05) grain yield differences were measured among cultivars within each season. Yield varied between 2979 and 4671 kg ha(-1) in the first season and between 1916 and 5200 kg ha(-1) in the second season. Late planting in the second season delayed heading date resulting in the post-heading period to coincide with periods of high temperatures. Cultivars that headed early, in general, yielded better than cultivars that headed later within each season with yield reduction of 35.3 kg ha(-1) in the first season and 91.0 kg ha(-1) in the second season for every 1 day delay in heading after mid-March. Early-heading cultivars outperformed later-heading cultivars because of two distinct advantages: the early-heading cultivars had longer post-heading and, therefore, longer grain filling period than the later-heading cultivars. In addition, early-heading cultivars completed a greater fraction of the grain filling earlier in the season when air temperatures were lower and generally more favourable. The advantage of earlier-heading cultivars was also manifested in the amount of green leaves retained to anthesis. Earlier-heading cultivars produced fewer total leaves per tiller but retained more green leaves and lost fewer leaves to senescence at anthesis than later-heading cultivars. The results suggest that early heading is an important and effective single trait defining wheat cultivars adapted to production systems prone to high temperature stress during the post-heading period.

Genotype and environment are major determinants of plant phenotype. Economically important quantitative traits include agronomic characteristics and grain composition. This study examined relationships among agronomic traits and grain composition as influenced by genotype and environment. Thirty‐three oat (Avena sativa L.) genotypes were grown in three trials in Idaho (Aberdeen irrigated, Tetonia irrigated, and Tetonia dryland) in three consecutive years (1999–2001). Yield, heading date, kernel physical characteristics, and concentrations of groat protein, β‐glucan, oil, tocols, and avenanthramides were measured. Analysis of the combined data for all environments showed significant genotypic differences for all traits except avenanthramide 2f Most of the variance was associated with genotype for all traits except yield, α‐tocopherol, and the avenanthramides. The genotype × trial interaction was significant only for avenanthramides concentration, whereas the genotype × year interaction was significant for most traits. Principal component analysis biplots illustrate that for protein and oil there was a clear difference between 2000 and the other years. Some genotypes were stable across environments; others responded differently in different environments. Correlation analysis showed several close associations among traits: avenanthramides were correlated with β‐glucan, and oil was negatively correlated with groat physical characteristics and with avenanthramide 2f The results show that knowledge of the relationships among traits and environments can assist breeders in optimizing both agronomic traits and grain composition simultaneously.

Data obtained from evaluations of NSGC germ plasm are entered in the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) system by the NSGGRF staff in coöperation with the ARS National Germplasm Resources Laboratory, Beltsville, MD. GRIN is a database containing the characteristics and availability of all genetic resources included in the National Plant Germplasm System. The Database Manager is J.D. Mowder, Beltsville, Maryland. The NSGGRF staff interacts with the GRIN system in recording NSGC orders (seed requests), entering a variety of data, and conducting information searches. No evaluations have been conducted to date for descriptors such as drought tolerance; salt tolerance; winterhardiness; resistance to Cephalosporium stripe, flag smut, leaf blight, loose smut, snow mold, take-all, tan spot, and WSMV; and protein.
