Epidermoid cysts of the parotid gland are rare. We report the case of a 60-year-old man with a cystic tumor of the right parotid gland. The patient had undergone ipsilateral middle ear surgery twice four years previously. The tumor was identified by computed tomography and ultrasonography and removed by total parotidectomy under suspicion of a parotid tumor. Histopathology revealed the diagnosis of an epidermal cyst. The differential diagnosis of a parotid tumor should include (iatrogenic) epidermoid cyst, in particular if there is a history of prior ear surgery via an endaural approach.
This paper presents a simple method for estimating the ablation rate during drilling processes in crystalline silicon wafers. Using data from literature, the physical process of material heating, melting, and ejection can be estimated on a time scale and leads to a temporal separation of the pulse duration in two parts. The latter one offers a theoretical determination of the expected average ablation rate. The results of this approximation coincide with experimental values and offer solutions to increase drilling efficiency. The experiments were done with a q-switched solid-state laser emitting at 1064 nm wavelength at pulse durations between 810 ns and 1440 ns. Copyright (C) 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Epidermoidzysten in der Gl. parotidea sind selten. Wir berichten über einen 60-jährigen Patienten mit einer seit Monaten größenprogredienten Raumforderung der rechten Gl. parotidea. Vier Jahre zuvor war 2-mal am rechten Ohr eine Tympanoplastik durchgeführt worden. Die Raumforderung wurde mittels Sonographie und Computertomographie dargestellt und im Rahmen einer totalen Parotidektomie exstirpiert. Die histologische Aufarbeitung ergab die Diagnose einer Epidermoidzyste. Bei der Differenzialdiagnose eines Parotistumors sollte insbesondere bei der Vorgeschichte einer Ohroperation über einen endauralen Zugangsschnitt auch an die Möglichkeit einer (iatrogenen) Epidermoidzyste gedacht werden.
The introduction of selective emitters underneath the front contacts of solar cells can considerably increase the cell efficiency. Thus, cost-effective fabrication methods for this process step would help to reduce the cost per Wp of silicon solar cells. Laser Chemical Processing (LCP) is based on the waterjet-guided laser (LaserMicroJet®) developed and commercialized by Synova S.A., but uses a chemical jet. This technology is able to perform local diffusions at high speed and accuracy without the need of masking or any high-temperature step of the entire wafer. We present experimental investigations on simple device structures to choose optimal laser parameters for selective emitter formation. These parameters are used to fabricate high-efficiency oxide-passivated LFC solar cells that exceed 20% efficiency.
Hintergrund. Das basosquamöse Karzinom (BSC) ist ein seltenes Malignom mit histologischen Charakteristika sowohl des Basalioms (BCC) als auch des Plattenepithelkarzinoms (SCC). Die histologische Diagnosestellung ist daher schwierig. Aufgrund des seltenen Vorkommens von BSC existieren keine einheitlichen therapeutischen Richtlinien.
The histological diagnosis of BSC is confirmed by the use of EMA and BerEP4 immunohistological staining. Clinically, BSC is a rare, aggressive skin tumor. Despite the histological similarity to basal cell carcinoma, BSC has an imminent risk of metastasizing. Hence, therapy should be similar to that for SCC, taking into consideration the age and general state of the usually elderly patient.
Safe potable water is a luxury that is generally unavailable to the majority of rural and suburban populations of developing, underdeveloped, and often developed countries. important considerations in the development and maintenance of safe water supplies is the availability and use of efficient, inexpensive, and appropriate technology for removing microbial hazards, parasites, and toxicants. The Manz intermittent slow sand filter was known to be user friendly, small enough to fit into the smallest kitchen, and could remove up to 97% of the fecal coliforms present in the raw water before treatment by the Manz filter. This filter was evaluated for its ability to remove parasitic cysts and toxicants as well as bacteria. Using two different filters and two different water supplies our results indicated that the intermittent slow sand filter could remove 83+% total heterotrophic bacterial populations, 100% of Giardia cysts, 99.98% of Cryptosporidium oocysts, and 50-90% of organic and inorganic toxicants when administered in concentrations varying from 10- > 100 x environmental pollution levels. Es wird darauf hingewiesen, daß bei experimentellen Arbeiten am Säugetierherzen stets deren Entwicklungshöhe beachtet werden muß, da aufgrund dessen innerhalb der verschiedenen Ordnungen der placentalen Säugetiere Herzmorphologie und Coronargefäßmuster stark differieren können. Entsprechend unterschiedlich ist auch die Herzanfälligkeit der als Versuchstiere verwendeten Arten.
