The aim of this research was to establish the relationship between the perceptions of social support and the psychological well-being among adolescents during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This research, which includes descriptive and relative features, was conducted from December 15, 2020 to January 31, 2021. There were 378 participants, all of whom were adolescents aged from 13 to 18 years who were living in Turkey. Either the adolescents themselves or their parents used social media tools or sites such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, etc., and they had all agreed to participate voluntarily. The adolescents had given their permission to the ethics committee through oral or written statements before the data were collected. The data collection process involved completing a questionnaire form, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Psychological Well-being Scale for Adolescents (PVSA). The Analysis of the data included numbers, percentages, means, the independent samples t test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Kruskal-Wallis H test, multiple regression analysis and correlations between these. Of the 378 participants who were admitted to the study, the mean age was 14.66 +/- 1.65, and 52.1% were female. The total mean for the perceived social support among adolescents was established as being 54.39 +/- 17.13. The mean level for psychological well-being was determined as being 91.13 +/- 12.34. A significant difference was detected between gender and levels of social support and psychological well-being of adolescents (p < 0.05). As a result of multiple regression analysis, the overall score of gender and PVSA has been found to have a statistically meaningful effect on the MSPSS overall score (p < 0.05). However, the difference in relation to the classes, the parents' jobs, the income levels, the family types and the places of residence of the adolescents in terms of social support and psychological well-being was not statistically significant. There was a statistically positive and strong correlation between the scores for social support and psychological well-being. The present study, which occurred during the outbreak of COVID-19, found that the levels of social support perceived by the adolescents and their psychological well-being were decent. In addition, the study showed that as the levels of perceived social support among the adolescents rose, their psychological well-being also increased positively.
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the maternal attachment, breastfeeding self-efficacy, and perceived insufficient milk supply of mothers of babies placed in a NICU in the face of restrictions in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.Desing and methods: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted at the NICU of a public hospital in eastern Turkey. The sample consisted of 292 mothers of term babies treated in the NICU. Data were collected using a sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, the Maternal Attachment Inventory (MAI), the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES-SF), and the Perception of Insufficient Milk (PIM) questionnaire. Results: Participants had a mean MAI, BSES-SF, and PIM score of 61.80±14.60, 43.88±11.52, and 24.53±13.61, respectively. A multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the effect of breastfeeding self-efficacy and perceived insufficient milk on maternal attachment. The results showed that the regression model accounted for 22% of the MAI score. While the BSES-SF score was a significant explanatory variable that increased the MAI score, the PIM score was a significant explanatory variable that decreased it (p<0.05). Participants who had tested positive for COVID-19 had a lower mean MAI score than those who had never tested positive for COVID-19. Participants separated from their babies and believed they could'nt breastfeed them sufficiently during the pandemic had a lower mean PIM score, suggesting that they perceived their milk supply as insufficient (p<0.05).Conclusion: Pandemic restrictions have an adverse impact on maternal attachment. Breastfeeding self-efficacy and perceived insufficient milk are effective variables that explain maternal attachment.
Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between eating behaviors and stress level in adolescents undergoing endoscopy. Method: This descriptive study was conducted in the endoscopy unit in the pediatric minor clinics of a university hospital in Erzurum between April and July 2019. The sample of the study was composed of 43 adolescents who came for endoscopy in the specified dates, were literate and had cognitive ability to express themselves and were voluntary to participate in the study. The data of the study were collected using “Descriptive Information Form”, “Scale of Eating Behaviors”, and “Perceived Stress Scale”. Results: It was determined that 76.7% were in the age group of 15-18 years and 79.1% were female. Mean score of the adolescents was 304.53±53.55 for the scale of eating behaviors and was 31.39±5.35 for perceived stress scale. It was found that the number of siblings and family income status were effective in the mean score of eating behaviors scale. Place of residence, family type and mother’s education level were effective in the mean score of perceived stress scale (p<0.05). A statistically positive and highly significant correlation was found between the eating behaviors and stress levels of the adolescents undergoing endoscopy (r: 0.877, p<0.001). Conclusion: Adolescents' eating behaviors were evaluated as good because the mean score of the scale was between 291 and 435. High perceived stress scale mean score of the adolescents indicated that they were stressed. In addition, it was found that some variables were effective on eating behaviors and stress levels of the adolescents undergoing endoscopy.
PURPOSE:This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the levels of loneliness adolescents feel during the pandemic, and their respective levels of internet addiction. DESIGN AND METHODS:The sample of the study consists of 482 adolescents who volunteered to participate in the study. All participants had the cognitive competence to express themselves, and had access to the Internet. PURPOSE:The research aim was to investigate the effects of therapeutic clowning on pain and fear during the process of venous blood sampling in children.DESIGN AND METHODS:This study was conducted in a randomised controlled trial from January to March 2020. The study population consisted of children from 7 to 12 years of age who came to the research centre for blood sampling. The research sample consisted of 166 children (83 in the intervention group and 83 in the control group) who met the research criteria and came to the research centre on a specific date through probable sampling. For the data collection, a questionnaire form, the Visual Analogue Scale and the Children's Fear Scale were used. Therapeutic clowning was used in this process for the intervention group. There was no intervention for children who were in the control group. The calculation of percentage distribution and means, χ2 test, analysis of variance analysis in repeated measures and least significant difference and independent t-test were used to analyse the data.RESULTS:The results of the research indicated that children in the intervention group had significantly lower pain and fear than children in the control group (p < .001). Therapeutic clowning seems to effectively reduce pain and fear during venous blood sampling for children from 7 to 12 years of age. Our results support using therapeutic clowns which is an inexpensive, safe, and effective method for lowering children's pain and fear during venous blood sampling.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS:The use of therapeutic clowns could become the standard of care in blood sampling for children from 7 to 12 years of age in hospitals. Therapeutic clowning, which is an easy-to-use, low-cost and practical method to provide better communication and cooperation with the family and the child, can be used as a complementary therapy in all nursing areas, especially in the field of paediatrics. Nurses could be encouraged to be trained on the use of therapeutic humour based upon a standardised approach and offered guidance on how to apply entertaining methods such as clowns. Therapeutic clowning can be examined in other applications in nursing care in light of these results.
Objectives: The measures taken by governments to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have changed millions of people’s daily lives. This study analyzes parents’ perceived stress and parent–child relationship while staying home due to lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The sample for this descriptive and cross-sectional study comprised 521 parents with children aged 4–18 years. Data were collected online using a Personal Information Form, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-4), and Child Parent Relationship Scale (CPRS) between 2 and 27 April 2020 in Turkey. Findings: The mean age of the study participants was 38.98±6.578 years, and 53.2% of participants were female. The parents’ mean PSS-4 and CPRS scores were 8.45±2.37 and 53.62±11.71, respectively. Of the parents, 44.0% stated that the days spent in the “Staying Home” period strengthened their relationships with their children, and 56.4% thought that it had provided them with the opportunity to take better care of their child. Mothers’ mean CPRS conflict scores were significantly higher than those of the fathers, and a negative relationship was found between the PSS-4 and CPRS positive-relationship sub-dimensions. Conclusion: Psychosocially supporting interventions should be planned for parents, especially mothers, who hold the most responsibility concerning housework and childcare during situations affecting the life adversely.
