Purpose Correctional facilities often constitute locally unwanted land use (LULUs), with local residents strongly demanding their relocation. Accordingly, the construction of correctional facilities is currently being promoted in regions that are far from city centres. Some local government officials consider relocating correctional facilities to rural areas as a golden opportunity to revitalise the economies of these areas. This paper focuses on the possibilities of local community participation in the sustainable development of prison siting in rural areas. Design/methodology/approach The methods and procedure of this study are as follows: (1) to review the relevant literature about regulations or cohesion policies when correctional facilities are constructed, (2) to examine the current issues relating to the conflict between correctional facilities and the local community from the perspective of LULUs and (3) to compare the construction processes of correctional facilities and public buildings in South Korea. The latter focuses on Daegu Correctional Facility as a site study through which to investigate how the facility interacted with the local community when the government decided to locate the correctional facility in a rural area. Findings The case study confirmed that communication methods between correctional facilities and stakeholders at each stage affected the occurrence and resolution of conflicts between them. In particular, it was found that correctional facilities in rural areas can transform the characteristics of the community by providing an open facility that serves community needs and boosts the local economy. Originality/value This study contributes to a new vision for locating correctional facilities, wherein conflicts are resolved through communication with local communities in rural regions. In addition, the study argues that community participation could allow correctional facilities to function as living hubs in the community and so benefit the residents of rural areas.
The recent climate crisis has accelerated studies on mitigating the atmospheric CO2 level. Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is highlighted as a promising strategy for CO2 conversion to useful chemicals. This study examined electrode-driven polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production from CO2 in Rhodobacter sphaeroides. The electron uptake and regulation of metabolic pathways differed in electrode-associated and suspended R. sphaeroides cells. The electrode-associated cells produced PHB at concentrations reaching 23.50 ± 2.8% of the dry cell weight (DCW). These results reveal a means for CO2 upcycling to polymeric substances and provide novel insights into the genetic regulation of electrode-associated cells in MES.
In the context of architectural education, design studio projects generally begin with the research of design themes and contexts; however, few attempts have been made to appreciate site analysis as reliable architectural design research. This study aims to explore strategies that link site analysis and design application to bridge the gap between research and representation as a framework for applying architectural design education. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study describes four phases of site analysis—(1) site selection, (2) site survey, (3) problem identification, and (4) suggestion for the design approach —in which visual expression of the representation technique was explored to develop a creative design approach through observation and analysis of students’ work. A curriculum that adopts the four phases of site analysis was developed based on the SPC and expanded for second-year architecture students in the university. The results showed that there are differences between architecture students in schematizing specific ideas and analysis methods, and that a substantial change in the process occurs when including visual expression in site analysis. In addition, the combination of group-based work and site analysis led to problem-solving that showed co-evolution. Finally, the study describes how research shapes site analysis and explains how representation can contribute to understanding the research. Site analysis consists of an initial attempt to explore research related to creative approaches, and may benefit both architecture educators and students.
This paper investigates the significant aspects of storytelling, when used as a pedagogical method to enhance students critical and creative thinking and communicative technique, by applying it to first-year students in the architecture design studio. Creativity is a substantial part of architectural education as it improves students’ design processes in innovative ways. This paper considers how the architecture design studio can form a creative design solution that can be learned and developed by learner-centred activity; it concentrates on aspects of storytelling, which many scholars have begun to discuss its significance in creative education. Thus, this paper aims to develop a creative learning strategy for use in the architecture design studio and suggest a new learning method by engaging storytelling in the design process. This paper starts with discussions about storytelling and its usages in the architecture design studio, referring to several theorists and educators, particularly focusing on McDrury and Alterio (2003); it helps to create a framework and develop a curriculum for the architecture design studio. The overall results suggest that using storytelling as a learning method in an architecture design studio is important in contextualising and articulating design work, from ideas to analysis, visualisation and expression, in a coherent context. It helps students gain better design skills and a greater understanding of the design process across the disciplines of the design studio, improving students creative thinking during the unique design process.
Purpose - This study aims to examine whether a text stimulus could enhance students' imagination and thus enhance their creativity in the architectural design studio. The assumption is that adopting the text stimulus in the conceptual design stage would support students' imagination through a nonlinear design process, and ultimately produce the creative values of design outcomes. Design/methodology/approach - A curriculum that adopts a text stimulus was developed and used for first-year university students. The aim was to implement an architectural setting to stimulate students' imagination with a framework for creativity evaluation. The study focused not only on the design process that characterizes the generation of concepts and ideas, but also on the processes related to the creative practices that students need for developing their own expression methods to solve problems they encounter. Findings - The results show that design education that emphasizes the imaginary could enhance students' creative thinking, thus leading to creative design. As a training tool in the design studio, the diversity of interpretation following the text stimulus was revealed to provoke a nonlinear design process and to eventually enhance students' originality, differential and inventiveness, which are associated with the creativity criteria for evaluation. Originality/value - The study explores the translation of imaginary spaces from text into spatial design as a conceptual tool in order to characterize and support creativity throughout design education in the architectural design studio.
It is increasingly important for researchers and educators to find effective ways to stimulate students’ creativity. In design education, the specificity of design, defined as open-ended problems and ill-defined problems, provides a special opportunity to improve creativity. Nevertheless, design education itself encounters other issues concerning creativity, such as not specifying in detail what creative design pedagogy should be. Thus, a comprehensive review of existing studies is needed to guide research in this field better. We used bibliometric analysis to provide information on literature statistics of the 658 articles published in design research–related journals between 1982 and 2022. An in-depth review of the 36 selected articles revealed the existing research on the design studio to investigate creativity from three perspectives: (1) creativity criteria and evaluation, (2) idea generation and development, and (3) pedagogy in the design studio. This study provides a roadmap for global educators and researchers focusing on pedagogy that enhances students’ creativity in the design studio.
Purpose Neuroarchitecture is a new interdisciplinary research field combining neuroscience and architecture that has developed and expanded since 2000. Neuroarchitecture originated from the divergence of previous multidisciplinary studies on the relationship between humans and the environment. However, scoping reviews of neuroarchitecture in relation to the experience of the built environment are lacking. Thus, this study aimed to provide the background and research trends of neuroarchitecture to contribute to discussions on the built environment. Design/methodology/approach A general form of scoping review was adopted, following the PRISMA-ScR checklist. For this scoping review emphasizing the embodied implication of neuroarchitecture for the built environment, an evaluation framework was developed consisting of four categories: health, performance, aesthetics and emotion. Findings This study explores objective techniques, including electroencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging, electrocardiogram, electrodermal activity and saliva cortisol, to measure neurophysiological impacts, adopting real, virtual and images of environmental settings. An in-depth review of 25 selected papers revealed the existing empirical research on neuroarchitecture using human physiological measurement tools and representational environment settings to examine the impact of human–environment relationships. Originality/value A meta-analysis of theoretical and intervention studies on neuroarchitecture that investigates the multisensory characteristics of the environment is lacking. In addition, the development and application of wearable tools to meet the needs of real environment settings can improve the effectiveness of neurophysiological measurement tools.
The realm of architecture has been influenced by the expansion in virtual environments (VEs), along with Industry 4.0 technologies transforming human–VE interactions. Despite increasing scholarly interest in embodied experience-integrated VE, there have been few comprehensive literature reviews undertaken on VEs from a holistic experience perspective. Therefore, this article reviews the literature on the embodied experiential dimension of VEs that has become necessary to adapt theories and methodologies in a way that enhances the user experience in a VE. This study employs a bibliometric analysis to review research performance and undertake a science mapping of the literature. The 969 pieces of data retrieved from Web of Science were subjected to a performance analysis, and VOSviewer was used to visualize the intellectual structure and research themes. The results of this study emphasize the strength and growing interest in VEs from the embodied experience perspective. Another significant finding is that VE experience studies are mostly based on embodied technologies. In this paper, the results of analyses are discussed in terms of productivity, collaboration, and research themes for future. This study contributes to the literature by providing a significant theoretical reference for the potential of the embodied experience in VE research, which will mostly attract the interest of architectural design researchers.
This paper investigates a vision of the underground environment associated with an aesthetic discipline. Its fundamental notion is sublimity, which was a phenomenon that involved a number of artworks engaged with changing the perception of the underground experience. This paper seeks to clarify how the idea of the living environment underground has changed by examining the works of writers, painters, and architects who have drawn inspiration from the concept of imaginary underworlds. Through a case study of the Chichu Art Museum, a representative underground space in terms of a sustainable relationship between architectural spaces and nature that could be experienced as sublime, this paper considers how to integrate visitors to distribute their awareness of artists’ work. It also stimulates visitors’ perceptions of a more sustainable future through sublime experiences, offering a way to understand underground integration with artworks. Therefore, this paper contributes to the knowledge of the relationship between architecture and artwork by increasing the aesthetic value of the underground space and considering how art intervenes in architecture to create a sustainable didactic.
The potential relationship between external and internal spaces in the architectural environment of the post-pandemic era is emerging as an essential issue. Since the early 20th century, the issue of transparency inside and outside architecture has been explored in various fields. This study is motivated by the lack of a leading theory about architectural transparency in the post-pandemic era. First, it revisits the notion of phenomenal transparency in Colin Rowe and Robert Slutzky’s influential text on “literal” and “phenomenal” transparency. Next, it investigates Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology for architectural transparency. Last, it scrutinizes practical possibilities using cases from Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates (SAANA). It finds that intertwining the cognition of natural environment and spatial experiential perceptions can create phenomenological architectural experiences. Sustainable architectural transparency may be accomplished when three factors (the visual perception of space, spatial experiential perceptions, and the cognition of natural environment) are incorporated. Further, depth functions as a medium for architectural transparency, intertwining between material and immaterial, literal and phenomenal, and visible and invisible. There is tremendous potential to conduct pilot studies based on this study, to re-evaluate architectural transparency with phenomenological ideas.
Purpose: Short bowel syndrome (SBS), defined as an intestinal failure (IF), is characterized by reduced intestinal length and insufficient absorptive surface area, leading to malabsorption of essential macronutrients and micronutrients from a normal diet. In consequence, partial or total parenteral nutrition (PN) by intravenous supplementation is required to maintain health and/or growth. However, long-term use of PN may lead to life-threatening complications. To reduce PN dependency, the only approved drug in the United States for SBS is Gattex® (teduglutide), daily GLP-2 analog. Nevertheless, the widespread use of teduglutide may be still limited due to insufficient efficacy and leading to a significant burden for patients as well as healthcare providers by the frequent daily administration and complicated preparation steps for its reconstitution. Hence, there is a medical unmet needs for more effective and longer lasting GLP-2 analog drugs. We have developed a long-acting GLP-2 analog, HM15912 to provide a novel therapeutic option. Here, we investigated the potential therapeutic effect of HM15912 in small bowel resected animal model and intestinotrophic Purpose: Previous studies report higher mortality rates amongst patients receiving home parenteral nutrition (HPN) for gastrointestinal dysmotility. UtilizationofHPNindysmotilitypatientsisincreasingandthereislimiteddataexploringthefrequencyofHPN-associatedmajorcomplications in this population. This study aimed to identify complication rates for catheter related blood stream infection (CRBSI), Intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD), and catheter venous complication – venous thrombosis (CVC-VT) in HPN patients with dysmotility HPN compared to those without dysmotility. Methods: This retrospective study was approved by the Cleveland Clinic IRB and utilized an IRB approved registry. Data collection included basic demographicsandHPNinformation,andHPNcomplicationsforpatientsreceivingHPNbetween3/1/2014to3/1/2018.Chi-squaretestcompared the differences in the complications between HPN patients with dysmotility to those without dysmotility. A p value of < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: A total of 1073 HPN episodes in 1030 patients were identified. Out of these 23% (n = 250) HPN episodes were in the patients who had gastrointestinal dysmotility. The major indications for HPN in the remaining 823 patients were Short Bowel Syndrome (39%, n = 419), Mechanical Bowel Obstruction (17%, n = 182), Enterocutaneous Fistula (14%, n = 148) and mucosal disease (7%, n = 81). Of the complications analyzed in all patients, CRBSI was the most common (13.8%), followed by IFALD and CVC associated thrombosis. Patients with dysmotility had a higher rate of major complications (20.4%) compared to those without (16.2%) (p > 0.05). Incidence of CRBSI were substan-tially higher (17.6% -vs- 12.6%) in dysmotility patients while IFALD rates were lower (1.6% -vs- 4.9%), when compared to HPN patients without dysmotility. To further compare the differences in CRBSI in our study groups, we calculated CRBSI rates standardized by HPN duration (i.e. per 1000 HPN days). We found that in our study group an overall rate of CRBSI was 0.35 per 1000 HPN days. CRBSI rates were higher in dysmotility group (0.50 per 1000 HPN days) compared to those without dysmotility (0.30 per 1000 HPN days), (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Patients with dysmotility have higher incidence of CRBSI and relatively lower incidence of IFALD. Potential reasons include patients with motility disorders often having underlying autoimmune disorders, predisposing them to infections and dysmotility is associated with alter-ations in the gut microbiota which may have a role in development of infections. Further studies with larger sample size are needed. Purpose: Cardiac surgery patients with postoperative complications and hemodynamic compromise are at high risk for Purpose: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a life-sustaining, high-risk medication that requires accommodating standardized practices while still considering patient-specific factors. A default electrolyte setting for PNorders is an availableoption within computerized provider order entry atCooper University Hospital. This setting provides a conservative amount of electrolytes in the PN product based on standard requirements (normal renal function:sodiumchloride70mEq/day,potassiumchloride40mEq/day,potassiumphosphorus15mmol/day,calciumgluconate9.6mEq/day,magne-sium sulfate 10 mEq/day; renal dysfunction: sodium chloride 20 mEq/day, calcium gluconate 9.6 mEq/day). Providers may deviate from the default settingandspecifyalternativeelectrolyteamountswithinthePNorder.Electrolytereplacement,externaltoPN,isusedtosupplementelectrolytes when indicated. The purpose of this study was to assess if default electrolyte selection for the first two PN orders is effective for adult hospitalized patients. Methods: Adult Purpose: Preterminfantsareatriskforextrauterinegrowthretardation(EUGR)whichtapersneurodevelopmentalpotentialinadulthood.Aggres-sive nutritional management was associated to improve outcome and lessen incidence of EUGR. Most data of EUGR comes from very low birth weight in high income countries. We aim to determine the rate of EUGR among preterm infants in our hospital, number of days in achieving full enteral feeding, type and volume achieved of enteral feeding on day 14th of life. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (CMH), Jakarta, Indonesia. All preterm infants hospitalized in 2018, without any restrictions on birth weight and gestational age, were included in our study. We excluded preemies that stayed less than seven days, admitted to our unit after seventh day-of-life, had congenital gastrointestinal disorders or necrotizing enterocolitis, and incomplete data. EUGR was defined as loss of one or more standard deviation of any anthropometric measurement upon discharge using INTERGROWTH-21 PostnatalGrowthChart.Bivariatedatawereanalyzedusingunpairedt-testorMann-Whitney,whilethemultivariatewereanalyzedusingANOVA. Purpose: or Blind insertion of a FT can result in life-threatening complications such as misplacement into the airway leading to a pneumothorax. Our health system was in need of a standardized process for bedside FT placement, and clinical practice varies from hospital to hospital. Several hospitals utilize technology for FT placement while other areas use blind placement method. It is also not clear who can place FTs and there is no associated competency training. Due to patient harm reports, the goal of this project is to determine best practices and standardize the placement of small-bore FTs. This canbe accomplished by using proven technology-based tube insertion, discontinuing blind FT placement, and assuring providers are trained and remain competent. for Purpose: The use of home enteral nutrition continues to increase as studies show a benefit in those who are unable to meet nutritional needs throughoralintake.However,notallpatientsareabletotoleratestandardpolymericformula(SPF),whichoftenleadstomalnutritionandgastroin-testinaldistress.Useofspecialtyformulassuchaspeptide-baseddiets(PBD)hasshownbenefitsinadults;however,thereremainsapaucityofdata in the pediatric population. Methods: RetrospectivereviewofelectronicmedicalrecordsofchildrenwhoreceivedenteralnutritionbetweenOctober2015andOctober2019. Nutritional history of these patients was tracked until end of May 2020. We included children who were on PBD as initial formula or switched to PBD from SPF and consumed for at least 4 weeks. This study was conducted to assess gastrointestinal tolerance and health care utilization in children on PBD. Results: During the study period, 30 children under 18 years at the time of initiation on enteral nutrition (mean age 9 ± 5.44 years; 66.7% male, weight 29.08 ± 23.45kg; weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) -0.46 ± 1.94) were taking PBD. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of trimodal prehabilitation program on the physical and psychological status for elderly patients underwent col-orectal surgery for cancer. Methods: From January 2018 to December 2019, the clinical data of seventy patients undergoing radical colon cancer surgery in our department were collected. They were divided into two groups: the prehabilitation group (32 cases) and the control group (38 cases). Six-minute walk test (6MWT),hospitalanxietyanddepressionscale(HADS)score,healthquestionnaire(SF-36)scorewererecordedandserumalbumin(ALB),prealbu-min (PA) were measured at before intervention and before operation. The recovery of intestinal function, operative time, intraoperative bleeding volume, postoperative complications, the length of hospital stay and hospitalization expenses between the two groups were compared. Results: The scores of 6MWT, SF-36 and the serum ALB,PA of the prehabilitation group was higher than control group (P < 0.05). The scores of HADS of the prehabilitation group was lower than control group. There was no significant difference in the scores of HADS and SF-36 of the control group between before operation and before intervention(P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the operative time, intraoperative bleeding volume, the rate of postoperative complications between the two groups (P > 0.05) . Compared with the control group, the recovery of intestinal function and length of hospital stay were significantly shortened in the prehabilitation group (P < 0.05) , the hospitalization expenses was significantly reduced in the prehabilitation group (P < 0.05) . Representing visual experiences is an essential part of architectural design education for creativity. The representation of creative ideas relates to the ability to communicate spatial design concepts. This study examined whether filmic spaces could function as visual communication to enhance students' creative thinking in architecture. It explored how creativity can be supported throughout an architectural design studio with a conceptual tool that translates filmic spaces into spatial design. To investigate the ways to translate filmic space into spatial design tools for creative thinking, we conducted a design studio with first-year university students. Focusing on using various elements of film, including movement, frame, montage, light, and color, and scene changes to represent architectural languages, a curriculum was developed and implemented in a Visual Communication Design Studio for one semester, stimulating students to engage in expressing their ideas in three-dimensional spaces. The overall results suggested that the design education method that used the filmic space as a stimulating tool for creative thinking, emphasizing the role of visual communication, could enhance students' creative thinking, leading to improved creative design processes.
Although it is completely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the island of Cyprus has long suffered from water problems arising from irregular rainfall, leading to sustained political conflict conditions for a long period. Water scarcity is likely to become a major issue, thus a range of options for water catchments should be examined and trialed. This article explores the connection between ownership of water and water management in a divided territory to gain an understanding of how politics are involved in water conflict. By investigating the water situation in Cyprus, this study aims to evaluate the strategies that can ensure the sustainability of new water networks for domestic and irrigation needs. This understanding can be used to minimize the gap between water supply and demand to provide water stressed countries with sufficient, safe, and reliable water for their domestic and irrigation needs. The research proposes a reinterpretation of the extraterritorial conditions of contemporary Cyprus and a plan to realign the island's water system through the creation of a new post-national territory. Thus, the study presents a vision for a sustainable water supply. In addition, the study discusses strategies and actions for water distribution networks with consideration of political and social issues to provide a potential new vision for future urbanization.
개설 당시에는 교외에 위치하던 교정시설이 끊임없는 도시화로 인해 점차 도심 내에 존재하게 되면서 교정시설은 비선호시설로 인식되며 지역주민들에 의해 극심한 이전 요구에 부딪치게 되고, 지역주민과의 갈등은 건축프로세스 지연 및 장기화의 가장 큰 원인이 되고 있다. 국가보안시설로서 폐쇄적인 교정시설은 지역사회와의 단절로 인해 외부로부터 더욱더 고립되어 또 다른 섬을 만드는 등 도시문제로 자리 잡고 있다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 본 연구는 1)교정시설의 문제점을 지역사회와의 단절이라는 관점에서 분석하고, 2)최근 신축·이전된 국내 교정시설이 지역사회와의 갈등 해결을 위해 어떠한 노력을 하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 3)구체적인 사례분석으로 최근 신축·이전된 서울남부교정시설을 방문하여 시설이 주변 지역사회와 어떻게 상호 작용하고 있으며 시설과의 교류가 지역주민들의 교정시설에 대한 인식 변화에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지 분석하였다. 이를 위해 교정시설 관계자 인터뷰와 교정시설 내 위치한 보라미어린이집 원장님 면담, 그리고 지역주민 설문조사를 실시하였다. 따라서 이 연구는 지역사회의 비선호시설인 교정시설의 이미지 변화를 지역사회와의 교류를 위한 시설의 개방이라는 새로운 패러다임을 통해 이루어 낼 수 있음을 제안하는데 목적이 있다.
