UV oligomers with good pigment dispersion are needed to allow good formulation flexibility and possibility to apply thinner films.Pigment dispersion mainly depends on three phenomena : the wetting of agglomerates, the breakage of agglomerates by mechanical stress and the stabilization of smaller agglomerates and primary particles against flocculation. It has been shown that oligomers with low viscosity and low surface tension induce a good pigment wetting.Examples of monomers and oligomers for good pigment dispersion are given.
The formation of a reversible gel by complexation of borate ions with poly(vinyl alcohol) is described. The complexation induces electrostatic charges on the polymeric chains. We focus on the behaviour of the system when the charges are partially screened by a passive salt. In such a case, ‘re-entrant phases’ can be observed; they result from a delicate balance between the electrostatic repulsions among charged complexes formed on the polymeric chain and the crosslinking induced by borate ions. We present here an interpretation of the phase transitions based on a thermodynamic approach.
The influence of chemical structure of unsaturated polyester (UP) prepoly mer on gelation of UP resins is studied by varying NPG content in the UP prepolymer backbone. Also, the effects of styrene concentration and solvent quality on gelation are evaluated. A corrected gelation model concerning free radical ionization reaction based on a microgel mechanism is proposed. The critical free radical concentration, Rc/f, needed to reach gelation state for each studied system is determined and is correlated with Flory interaction parameter, χ. A linear relationship of Rc/f and χ is obtained, which provides an opportunity to predict the gelation of UP resins from a resin molecular aspect.
AbstractThe rheological behavior of semidilute galactomannan solutions in the presence of borax has been studied. The effects of polymer and borate concentrations, ionic strength, pH, and temperature are investigated and discussed. The shape of the viscoelastic functions of galactomannan–borax gels is similar to that for semidilute or concentrated polymer solutions. In 1 M NaCl, electrostatic effects are screened and the characteristic moduli of the gels appear to be determined by the number of interchain crosslinks. The elastic plateau modulus varies linearly with the free borate concentration and with the 2.6 power of the galactomannan concentration. Time–temperature type superposition is applicable if a vertical shift is introduced to account for the exothermic nature of the complexation reactions. Moreover, it seems possible to control the gel reversibility and the lifetime of crosslinks by changing the complexation kinetics via the pH.

This review focuses on the synthesis, self-assembled structure and properties of bisurea-based supramolecular polymers. The straightforward synthetic accessibility of the bisurea synthon has allowed the systematic description of the relationship between the molecular structure and supramolecular assembly. Remarkably, these systems self-assemble at equilibrium into two competing supramolecular structures. Therefore, the assembly of low molar mass bisureas can lead to stimuli responsive viscoelastic gels as well as to systems which are able to report on weak intermolecular interactions. When deposited on surfaces, these hydrogen-bonded chains of molecules form well-organized monolayers in spite of defects from the substrate. Moreover, polymers with improved rheological or adhesive properties can be designed by grafting bisurea stickers.
