This article is framed in a research project called "Literature from a linguistic perspective: modelling and teaching of literary narrative genres and response genres" carried out within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL).One of the aims of this project is to create a model of the generic macro-structure of the literary macro-genre short story to be used for teaching purposes. This model is developed on the basis of the existent categories of personal narratives (Plum 2004;Martin and Rose 2008;Salmaso 2014Salmaso , 2017Salmaso , 2021) ) and fairy tales (Hasan 1997) in SFL.This article presents the results of a qualitative analysis of the generic macro-structure of six short stories. It provides a generic macro-structure potential for literary macro-genre short story, the elementary genres that are inserted in the constituents of this macro-genre and the reasons why such genres are inserted where they are. This article also presents a series of activities based on the generic macro-structure potential of short stories proposed, which provide a more objective tool for the analysis and comprehension of certain aspects of this macro-genre, like its organisation into different constituents, their purpose and their contribution to the overall purpose of the macro-genre, showing that systematic analysis of this genre can foster students' reading comprehension. This paper is expected to make, on the one hand, a theoretical contribution to SFL through an initial modelling of the macro-genre short story and, on the other hand, a practical contribution to the teaching of English through literature.
The focus of my research is Narrative Instances (NIs) of Admission Interviews (AIs) in Public Mental Health carried out in Youth Centres of Mendoza Province, Argentina, within the framework of MOdEAS project. The aim of this paper is to show the functional relation between NIs and Verbal Actions (Paris 2012, 2009, Paris et al. 2008) that are expressed in the AIs: <complaint>, <victimisation>, <disqualification>, etc. Verbal Actions (VAs) are theoretical constructs that capture the interactional nature of conversations and are defined by an information structure based on five attributes. Paris (2012: 3) argues that the abstract scheme used to define VAs can be realised in various and different ways. According to my hypothesis, the nucleus of VAs is expressed in the evaluative constituents of the different categories of NIs, which makes it possible to establish relationships between type of VA and type of appraisal (subsystem of attitude) (Martin y White 2005). I also sustain that non-evaluative constituents of NIs are the "rhetoric structure", i.e. each of the non-evaluative constituents has a rhetoric function (Mann et al., 1992; Mann y Thompson, 1988; Paris, 2010) which contributes to the effective completion of the VA. In this paper, I illustrate the relation between nucleus and rhetorical structure of the VAs <complaint> (Paris 2012), <victimisation> and <disqualification> (Salmaso 2013) with a NI that belongs to the category Narrative.

The core of my research project are Narratives Instances (NIs) of Admission Interviews (AIs) in Public Mental Health carried out in Youth Centres of Mendoza Province, Argentina – within MOdEAS (Modelling of Admission Interviews). The NIs in AIs are oral, spontaneous and co-produced by patients and professionals; therefore, during the initial stage of my research, I redefi ned the categories of narrative genres (Labov, 1972; Labov y Walezky, 1997; Plum, 2004; Martin y Rose, 2008), which were generated on the basis of written narrative texts or induced oral narrative texts, so as to make them applicable to the co-produced and spontaneous orality of NIs in AIs (Salmaso, 2009, 2010, 2012). In this paper, I provide essential evidence to validate my redefinition: there is a systematic relation between the type of constituent and the density of a certain type of process. I classify the constituents into three classes: descriptive constituents – describe characters, time and place –, eventive constituents – present main events and events logically or temporally related to the main events – and evaluative constituents – denote positive or negative evaluation of affect, judgement or appreciation (Martin y White, 2005). I analyse the correlation between these categories of constituents and the different types of processes. The nucleus of my redefinition proposal is the flexibilisation of the categories of NIs through the identification of common and differential constituents between the five categories. I show that the common constituents exhibit the same type of processes in all five ategories of NIs while differential constituents are characterised by having more density of certain types of processes. I herein present the transitivity analysis (Halliday, 1994; Halliday y Matthiessen, 2004; Martin, Matthiessen y Painter, 1997; Matthiessen, 1995) of six Anecdotes out of the twenty five NIs analysed, of eleven speakers, which constitute the corpus of my research – all of them extracted from the corpus of MOdEAS project made up of thirty interviews. The results of the analyses show that eventive constituents have greater density of material processes in independent clauses followed by verbal processes in independent clauses. Descriptive constituents present a greater amount of relational processes in independent clauses and, occasionally, material processes accompanied by circumstances of location and/or time to express habits or to describe the scene where the events take place. The evaluative constituent of Anecdotes, called ‘interpretation of the reaction’, presents special patterns that help characterise it and distinguish it from the other evaluative constituents; it has greater density of verbal processes followed by relational processes. Key words: admission interviews, anecdotes, transitivity, lexical restrictions.

In this article we explore, from a systemic-functional perspective, the role played by two subgroups of verbal processes, "processes of saying + quality" and "processes of judgment", in encoding meanings central to the creation of different elements in narratives, more specifically their contribution to the portrayal of characters and the tenor between them, to the advancement of action and to the articulation of the more profound themes in the narratives. We base our observations on a sample of narrative texts by two hispano-american authors, Julio Cortázar and Eduardo Galeano, and we seek to support them by reference to the semantic and lexico-grammatical properties of the processes under study and to patterns they form in the text. We draw upon transitivity descriptions within Systemic Functional Linguistics and on work by Halliday (1971, 2002) and by Hassan (1985, 1996) setting forth principles for a Linguistic Stylistics.

This paper is part of a project called MOdEAS that aims at creating a model of the Admission Interviews (AIs) in Public Mental Health carried out in Youth Centres of Mendoza Province, Argentina. My study focuses on the Narrative Instances (NIs) that are part of the AIs. The categories of NIs that I apply in my study-Narrations (Labov, 1972) and Recounts, Anecdotes, Exempla and Observations (Plum, 2004; Martin and Rose, 2008)-have been developed by using written narrative texts or oral ones but induced. The NIs of the AIs are, on the contrary, spontaneous and coproduced. As a consequence, it is necessary to make changes in the aforementioned categories of narratives so that they suit the spontaneous and coproduced orality of the NIs of my corpus. Therefore, the purpose of the first stage of my research project is to redefine the narrative categories so that they can be applied to the analysis of the NIs of the AIs. In Salmaso (2009) I redefined the category Recount; in this paper I provide a definition of Anecdotes. For the Anecdotes I propose (i) changes in the schematic structure through (a) the inclusion of the constituents 'abstract', 'record of events', 'interpretation of the reaction' and 'reorientation'; (b) a change in nomenclature from 'extraordinary event' to 'disruption' in order to use the same label for this element in the different categories of NIs since it has the same function in all of them; (c) a redefinition of the function of the 'reaction' and 'coda'; and I also claim that (ii) due to the presence of an 'interpretation of the reaction', the purpose of the Anecdotes is to show the reaction of a participant/narrator to a disruption and to interpret such reaction.
