We study human-human dialogues in a natural language where the communicative goal of the initiator of dialogue is to bring the partner to a decision to do a certain action. If the partner does not accept the goal then dispute will start. Arguments for and against of doing the action will be presented by the participants and finally, one of them wins and another loses the dispute. We present a formal model of dispute which includes a model of argument. We discuss involvement of the notion of communicative strategy in the model. A communicative strategy is considered as an algorithm used by a participant for achieving his or her communicative goal. A communicative strategy determines also how a participant is moving in âcommunicative spaceâ during interaction. Communicative space is characterized by a number of coordinates (e.g. social distance between participants, intensity of communication, etc.). A limited version of the model of dispute is implemented on the computer.
We are concerned with the process of reasoning directed towards the decision to carry out or not to carry out an action D. This process may be induced by three kinds of determinants: the WISH-, NEEDED- or MUST-determinants. The actiwy of these determinants corresponds to certain values on the scales pleasant/unpleasant, useful/harmful and obligatory/prohibited (on the part of the agent S of D). The role of these scales in the reasoning process is different depending on the determinant by which process is triggered. In addition, the interaction of the values of the three scales in the process of reasoning is regulated by specific rules. We represent three basic reasoning models in the form of algorithms using the schematic programming notation.
The paper develops the method for text frame organization. Text which describes dynamic situations is considered.
The paper touches upon the relations between grammar-oriented and communication-oriented ways of analysing language in the light of some recent related developments in theoretical linguistics, congnitive psychology and artificial intelligence. The integration of (linguistic) meaning, situational interpretation and background knowledge is discussed. In Particular, different types of linguistically relevant common-sense knowledge and higher level cognitive procedures are considered.
