Early in the Cold War, Sweden’s leaders planned to acquire nuclear weapons. By the 1960s the country was an international leader of the disarmament movement.
Environmentalism arose in response to anxieties and tensions over the growing power of big business that came to light in the 1940s and 1950s. More than ever, powerful corporations and a federal government bent on economic growth were seen by many Americans as threats to human health and the environment. Fallout from atomic testing, air and water pollution, the proliferation of pesticides and herbicides—all connected to the growing dominance of technology and corporate capitalism in American life—led a variety of constituencies to seek solutions in what came to be known as environmentalism. In addition to the usual political and legal maneuvers employed to effect change, an alternative form of civic participation emerged beginning in the late 1940s as growing numbers of citizens turned to what they deemed environmentally friendly consumption practices. The goal of this politically charged consumption was not only to protect themselves and their families from harm, but to achieve social change at a time when many Americans believed the polity was increasingly out of balance, with government placing the desires of business before the needs of its citizens. Politicians responded to the growing environmental concerns of middle-class Americans, but, in the end, continual political compromises with corporate power meant weak laws and lax enforcement. Many citizens sought refuge in an alternative “green” marketplace—an attempt to find a space within an imagined community of others who shared their concerns and frustrations, as well as their vision for a different American Way.
For certain combinations of protons and neutrons, there is a theoretical expectation that the shape of nuclei can assume octupole deformation, which would give rise to reflection asymmetry or a "pear shape" in the intrinsic frame, either dynamically (octupole vibrations) or statically (permanent octupole deformation).In this paper, I will briefly review the historic evidence for reflection asymmetry in nuclei, describe how recent experiments carried out at REX-ISOLDE are constraining nuclear theory and how they contribute to tests of extensions of the Standard Model, and look at future prospects for this field.

It is designed to foster further collaboration, dissemination of research results and findings from practitioners, as well as to promote discussion of how we can both learn from each other and from those we serve in underserved communities wherever they may be.

Computers are increasingly mediating the way people make decisions, including those that can have an effect on conflict and peace. In addition, recent research provides empirical data on the factors that affect the likelihood of armed conflict. These conditions provide an unprecedented opportunity to the human-computer interaction community to play a role in preventing, de-escalating, and recovering from conflicts. This SIG will be the first opportunity for CHI attendees to meet during the main part of the conference, share their ideas, and provide concrete ways to move forward with this line of research.
Designers often struggle to create interfaces that are optimal for both younger and older adults, as they may interact differently with the same interface. Human-performance models have been used to aid designers in evaluating the efficiency of user interfaces. Can we create age-specific models to help designers create interfaces that are efficient for all age groups? We modeled a target acquisition task using published younger and older person parameters. While the younger model's mean prediction matches younger human data well (within 3.2%), the older model overestimates older users' mean task times by 34.6%. Further work should explore the influence of device type and the role of error-avoidance on parameter values for models of older adult interactions with technology.
In this workshop, we intend to explore within the HCI community the importance of fashion in the IT industry. We will explore the meaning of fashion and how fashion and sustainability could and might interplay in the IT industry. Participants in the workshop will collaborate in a practical exercise to act as a stimulus for thought concerning how the notion of fashion affects people's behaviors and attitudes toward digital consumption. Participants will also form different groups and share their own personal experience, behavioral changes, as well as insights related to sustainability and fashion. The outcomes of the workshop will include 1) a collection of exemplars and patterns relevant to fashion related to digital devices and technology services; 2) the identification and description of the characteristics of fashion in the digital technology domain; 3) a summary of the discussion on how interaction designers and researchers can use fashion as a positive force in sustainable HCI.

In this paper, we investigate how social media influence people in making decisions about fashion consumption of digital artifacts, especially from the perspective of sustainability. As a way to investigate, we conducted a qualitative study with 17 people by asking them about their experience of using social media in choosing electronic computing and communication devices. Our findings include an interpretation of people's motivations on fashion consumption, people's awareness of the ecological impacts of fashion consumption, as well as how social media influence people in making decisions about fashion consumption.

In this study, we explore the role of age and fluid intelligence on the behavior of people looking for information in a real-world search space. Analyses of mouse moves, clicks, and eye movements provide a window into possible differences in both task strategy and performance, and allow us to begin to separate the influence of age from the correlated but isolable influence of cognitive ability. We found little evidence of differences in strategy between younger and older participants matched on fluid intelligence. Both performance and strategy differences were found between older participants having higher versus lower fluid intelligence, however, suggesting that cognitive factors, rather than age per se, exert the dominant influence. This underscores the importance of measuring and controlling for cognitive abilities in studies involving older adults.
