1849 A repeated 40-yard sprint test (40R) has previously been proposed to evaluate the anaerobic fitness of football players. Peak speed and the systematic decline in speed across trials is used as an indication of performance. However, concerns have been raised regarding musculoskeletal injury risks with this test. The use of a lower body Wingate anaerobic test(WAnT), however, is a valid and reliable single anaerobic power test and may provide comparable data to the 40R while reducing risk of injury. We compared the anaerobic parameters from the 40R and the WAnT using collegiate football players. Sixteen collegiate football players; 8 position players (mean±SD) (19.6±2 y), (86.7±7 kg), (71.3±4 cm) and 8 lineman (19.9±1 y), (117.2±15 kg), and (73.7±2 cm), performed ten 40-yard sprints with 25 sec rest periods between trials and a WAnT one week apart. Running speed (yd·sec-1) was plotted and the sprint fatigue index (FIs%) across trials was calculated. Significant (p< 0.05) correlations were observed between peak power (PP/kg) and maximal running speed (Smax) (0.70) and PP/lean kg and Smax(0.63). Average Power (AP/kg) was correlations (p< 0.05) with the decline in speed (.50) and the FIs% (-.56). No significant correlations were observed between fatigue indices. We conclude that with respect to the 40R the WAnT can provide adequate information regarding the anaerobic fitness of collegiate football players.

In this correspondence we discuss an application of a work measure introduced by Hellerman. Uniform machines are represented by chains of transformations of Boolean functions. The work of any transformation depends only on the rank of a corresponding Boolean matrix.
The paper investigates the set of words accepted by a linear sequential machine M and the algebraic structure of this set. If M is nonsingular a strong relationship exists between this set and the transition group of the accepting automaton. Thus the algebraic structure of this group is used to describe some properties of the set of accepted words. If M is nilpotent, in addition, an algorithm is given which in a direct way generates just the words accepted by M.
