The goals of the research are the design and synthesis of a new class of precursor compounds for III/V compound semiconductor materials, growth of films with these precursors and developoment of an understanding of the relationships between precursor structure, film growth reactions and film properties. Conventional OMCVD of III/V compound materials has a number of inherent safety and processing problems associated with the group III alkyl and group V hydride sources. Our approach to these problems is the synthesis of a single precursor with a fixed III:V stoichiometry and a direct two center, two electron sigma III V bond., These, compounds have the general formula,[R2M(R 2 E)] 2 and R2M(R 2 E) 2M R2 (MM = Al, Ga, In; E=P, As; R, R = alkyl, aryl). The III V bond in these compounds is stronger than the other bonds and the minium deposition temperature can be controlled by employing subsituents that undergo facile hydrocarbon elimination. A typical example is the use of [Me 2Ga(µ t Bu 2 As)] 2 as the single source for GaAs films. The organometallic precursor is a solid crystalline powder which is maintained at 130°C to generate enough vapor for OMCVD. Typical film growth conditions involve the use of H2 or He as the carrier gas, substrate temperatures of 500 to 700°C, and a total system pressure of 0.0002 Torr. GaAs(100), Si(100) (As doped 30 off toward (011) and quartz have been used as substrates. Film composition has been established with XPS. The Ga 3d, As 3d, and C ls signals at 18.8, 40.9, and 284.6 eV, respectively, reveal the films to be 1:1 Ga:As and void of carbon. The carbon levels are less than 1000 ppm. X ray diffraction and SEM results suggest polycrystalline GaAs on quartz and epitaxial GaAs on GaAs(100) and Si(100). (2 K) photoluminescence measurements on GaAs, grown on semi insulating GaAs(100) and Si doped GaAs(0 100) at 570 C. produce PL signals indicating that crystalline domains are present, the measurements indicate degeneratively n doped material and show that good Ga:As ratios and low levels (ca. 1 ppm) of impurities are present. Growth rates:∼ 1.0 mm/hour.
Kenneth Kidd's discussion of feral tales in the context of Allan W. Eckert's novel illustrates the complexities of feral tales and situates the ideas of human, Other, and nature within them. The veracity of the actual episode may be questioned but Eckert's story seems all the more realistic, it is suggested, because it operates within a specific established folkloric tradition, one in which science and mythology are entangled.
Men Who Run with Wolves, and the Women Who Love Them: Child Study and Compulsory Heterosexuality in Feral Child Films Kenneth Kidd (bio) My title alludes not only to the rhetoric of talk shows but also to a particular text, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ 1992 bestseller Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype. Inside every woman, asserts Estés, is a Wild Woman struggling for release, whose instinctive, creative energies have long been repressed. A Jungian analyst and cantadora, or storyteller, Estés argues that women bear powerful resemblances to wolves; she began her study of the archetype, in fact, by studying wolf culture. Estés notes the ways in which folk narratives have been altered to suit specific audiences, but also insists that beneath those changes lie the bare bones of female experience, emblematized by La Loba, the Wolf Woman, the incarnation of feral woman. Estés’ work is a compelling rejoinder not only to the Freudian tradition of fairy-tale analysis and bibliotherapy, but to the contemporary mythopoetic men’s movement, which has adapted classic folk mythology. Even those not sympathetic to archetypal criticism should agree that her book is a timely intervention in the masculinist landscape of Jungian pop psychology, challenging the manifestos of male shamans like poet Robert Bly, whose best-selling Iron John (1990) remains the ur-text for weekend warriors. Unlike Estés, whose recuperative mythology embraces men as well as women, and homosexuality as well as heterosexuality, Bly attacks women and gay men for the psychic trauma they inflict upon heterosexual [End Page 90] men. As his book attests, the contemporary men’s movement, like the backlash of a century ago, draws upon paranoid narratives of feminization and sexual dysphoria. 1 Central to Bly’s program of male regeneration is his reading (or rather rewriting) of the Der Eisenhaus or “Iron Hans” fable circulated by the Brothers Grimm in 1850. As Jack Zipes demonstrates, Bly distorts the history and content of Der Eisenhaus to fashion his own myth of feminine meddling and masculine revenge. Iron John is indeed a “nightmare” not only for folklorists but for everyone concerned about the politics of gender and sexuality (Zipes 104), especially since Bly’s use of folk literature lends credibility to even more reactionary texts. The juxtaposition of Estés and Bly suggests the gendered and sexually coded nature of the battle now waged over folk literature and the category of the feral. For Estés, the feral is feminine and instinctively creative, for Bly et al., it is masculine and violent. Bly repeats the tiresome narrative of feminization; perhaps in response, Estés implies that our culture masculinizes universal life patterns, encoded in folk literature. Estés’ La Loba runs counter not only to Bly’s Wild Man archetype, but to the contemporary masculinization of the werewolf of classic lycanthropy, or werewolf lore. Historically the werewolf has encoded female as well as male sexuality and power, but in twentieth-century texts it is usually presumed male and heterosexual. Like revisions of “Little Red Riding Hood,” Estés’ work reclaims wolf-cultism organized around female deities. 2 A few novels, poems, stories, and films have similarly challenged the custodial dimensions of feral child narrative, implying that the feral might be an index of bad parenting and even reactionary politics. Yet despite these more promising incarnations, the motif remains rhetorically masculinist and heterosexist, and in the current political climate has enjoyed a renaissance, especially on the silver screen. In most stories, the feral child is a boy whose savage virtue and virility prove him superior to both animals and civilized humans. The few girls in the genre live a dismal life, if they survive at all. Even as Estés and others try to rescuscitate and empower the feral girl, the feral boy has been become fetishistic by the mythopoetic industry. The reactionary antics of Bly and fellow shamans parallel the representational politics of several recent feral child films, including Teen Wolf (1985), Hook (1991) and Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book (1994). AbstractSemiconductors such as gallium arsenide and indium phosphide are important materials used in the fabrication of microelectronic and optoelectronic devices.
AbstractThe title complexes (III), (VI), (VIII), (X), and (IX) are synthesized according to the scheme and characterized by X‐ray structure analysis ((III): space group Pnnm, Z=2; (VI): C2/m, Z=2; (VIII): P212121: Z=4; (X) and (IX): P21/c, Z=4).
Reaction of GaCl3 with t-BuLi (2 equiv.)and Li-(C5H9)PH in THF at −78°C gives colourless crystalline [t-Bu2Ga(μ-(C5H9)PH)]2 (1) in 80% yield (C5H9 = cyclopentyl). Reaction of Et3Al with t-Bu2AsH at 220°C gives the aluminium arsenide dimer, [Et2Al(μ-t-Bu2As)]2 (2) (63%). The X-ray structures of both (1) and (2) have been determined. They are both dimeric with bridging phosphido or arsenido groups and terminal alkyls. The coordination geometry of the Ga or Al atoms is roughly tetrahedral in each case. For compound (1) 31P NMR data indicate the presence of both the syn and anti isomers in solution (relative ratios 1:2.5). In the solid state only the anti isomer is observed. Crystal data for (1): C26H56Ga2P2, M = 570.12, monoclinic, C2/m (No. 12), a = 16.736(3), b = 11.586(1), c = 8.413(2) Å, β = 104.62(1)°, U = 1578.6(5) Å3, Dc = 1.20 g cm−3, Z = 2, μ(Mo-Kα) = 18.11 cm−1. Refinement of 1054 reflections (I 3σ(I)) out of 1447 unique observed reflections (3° ⩽ 2θ ⩽ 50°) gave RRw values of 0.0503 and 0.0565, respectively. Data/parameter ratio = 12.85, highest peak in final difference Fourier = 0.604 e Å−3. Crystal data for (2): C24H56Al2As2, M = 434.29, monoclinic, P21/n (No. 14), a = 8.907(1), b = 11.691(1), c = 14.735(3) Å, β = 90.25(1)°, U = 1534.4(5) Å3, Dc = 1.88 g cm−3, Z = 4, μ(Mo-Kα) = 44.47 cm−1. Refinement of 1165 reflections (I > 3σ(I)) out of 2700 unique observed reflections (3° ⩽ 2θ; ⩽ 50°) gave R and Rw values of 0.0523 and 0.0600, respectively. Data/parameter ratio = 9.173, highest peak in the final difference Fourier = 0.439 e Å−3.
An X-ray diffraction study reveals that the solid state of [Me2InAsMe2]3 contains two independent molecules per asymmetric unit; one has a planar IN3As3 ring while the other is puckered. The Ga3Sb3 ring of [Cl2GaSb(t-Bu)2]3 (2) is basically boat-shaped, with one Sb atom and one Ga atom 0.938 Å and 0.620 Å respectively above the central Ga2Sb2 plane of the molecule.

The reaction of GaCl3 with three equivalents of But2AsLi, But2AsLi, or ArP(H)Li (Ar = 2,4,6-But3C6H2) affords Ga(PBut2)3, Ga(AsBut2)3, and Ga[P(H)Ar]3, respectively, whilst the reaction of GaCl3 with one equivalent of But2ELi and two equivalents of RLi results in dimeric phosphido- or arsenido-bridged compounds of the type [Ga(µ-EBut2)R2]2(E = P, As; R = Me, Bun).
[Li(thf){As(But)As(But)2}]2(thf = tetrahydrofuran), produced from the interaction of LiAs(But)2 with MgBr2(2 : 1) in thf, is a dimer with two Li atoms bridging two–As(But)As(But)2 groups and with a planar Li2As2 core [Li–As 2.58(2), As–As 2.403(2), Li ⋯ Li 3.290(3)Å].
